Once worked with Clem on Kids from Fame tour 1983. Absolute top man--modest,unassuming, polite and free of any ego. Oh and a great drummer too!
What a wonderful interview. Very casual, but well done. Almost like 2 long time friends having a chat.
Thankyou - glad you liked it!
What a brilliant interview! It must have been a privilege to interview Clem Cattini. That's not just because of his pedigree, great though that is. It's as much because of how interesting he makes everything and how naturally modest he clearly is. Great score, Spike!
+turnitback Just seen your comment from a year ago - many thanks, glad you enjoyed the interview!
+Spike Webb Blimey! Where did that year go. It seemed like yesterday.
Goes quicker every year!
Great interview, great drummer!
Thanks!:-)
A sweet man and another drummer called Clem.
Fantastic a legend for sure, name on so many albums
I can see no need to put session drummer in brackets - if you are watching this and don't know who this man is take up the bass!! My hero
Good point!
Very down to earth.
Wonderful to think people like Clem are a part of musical history.
yes what a down to earth wonderful person it was nice what he said at the end about playing a musical instrument is a great thing to do
My understanding is that Bobby Graham played the drums on You Really Got Me. I often see it credited to Clem on drums.
Thanks Glem you put my mind at rest us drummers are all prone to make a few mistakes, I have been with a rock and roll band for a couple of yours now after not playing drums for quite a few years now back into it ,playing classic rock and roll,,,
I stopped playing for 30 years, but began again 3 years ago and at 72 now, it's hard to find a gig. How did you manage it?
I wonder what Clem Clattini thought of Tony Meehan's drumming?
Clem isn't sure who played drums on 'It's Not Unusual', but is confident it wasn't him. I put this question to Chris Slade (Manfred Mann, the Firm, AC/DC) who was the drummer in Jones' backing band, the Squires back in the day. He didn't know, either, though understood there were several versions recorded, one, I believe with him, though seeing live footage of him with Jones, his drumming is much more straight-up than on the record, so it definitely wasn't him. I have read that it was Ronnie Verrell (best known as 'Animal' on the Muppets). Verrell's big band swing style was certainly ideal for that tune. Also, record has it that he did Petula Clark's 'Downtown', which is another classic track with great musicianship.
+Wayne Blanchard Hi Wayne, "It's not unusual" is on Bobby Graham's session list here
www.bobbygraham.co.uk/bobbygraham/discography.htm
but I get the impression from reading about the session scene that many sessions had more than one drummer?
+MCBhangramuffin - Yes, you'll find duplications between the Graham and Cattini credit lists (notably the earliest Kinks hits). In the case of 'It's Not Unusual' there were apparently four versions recorded (per what Chris Slade believed to be the case), so Graham might have had that tune in his diary, as did three others, though only one - apparently Verrell's - was used. Ironically, that would be similar to what Steely Dan would start doing a decade later - record different players and choose the most suitable track. Not there's a thought: Steely Dan doing 'It's Not Unusual'.....
Chris Slade--another top drummer and top man.
