    Wow, that was really slimy of them to want THAT MUCH to repair it, and to treat you or anyone else like that. You "abused" your camera, geez. What's the point of a warranty if they can just claim that on anything? I'm not much of a camera person, but boy oh boy will I definitely avoid Panasonic in the future thanks to this. Hopefully whichever new camera you end up getting will treat you right and have decent customer support!

      Sounds like a scam to me. You send the product in, they tell you it's been abused, that's it, discussion over, you lose whatever money you spent to cover potential flaws with their product and not caused by normal usage.

    The only warranty/repair thing I've had to deal with personally is when my Wii U had some weird memory issue and I had to call Nintendo to get it repaired (to functionality if not restoring my saves, which spoiler alert couldn't be done but I was able to replay everything and also learned from this experience and got an external hd). Customer service was super chill and they got my stuff taken care of in a timely manner, with the system coming back just like the day I'd bought it. It helped ease my phone anxiety that during the call, the hold music was the Hyrule Field theme from OoT which was much more calming to me than some tinny elevator music. :D

      I have had pretty good luck with nintendo's customer service, my brother is autistic and broke his 2ds in the middle of a meltdown and i explained the situation to them and they were very understanding. He literally broke the thing in half, they charged us like $85 ish for the repair and sent us a free 2 day shipping label so we didn't have to pay for shipping.

    • @theenderengineer1943
      @theenderengineer1943 6 лет назад +2

      I've always had good luck with Nintendo. The only time I've had to pay for a fix was my Wii, but I think it was 2-3 years after I bought it anyway.

    • @leanthegreen
      @leanthegreen 6 лет назад

      Nintendo's customer service has been awesome from my experience, my less than a month old Switch Pro Controller's triggers had completely stopped responding and they repaired it at no charge. I'm so glad it was fixed, because it was also the Xenoblade 2 model and I really didn't want to have to get a replacement.

    Before watching the video, I was like: Wow Stephen you usually try and keep things positive, what could have possibly happened?
    Then I watched the video, and yeah I'm right there with you. That's a pretty messed up thing, claiming your camera(and others) as "abused" with literally no way to fight it. That's just a freaking joke. I never really need a camera, but I'll def stay away from Panasonic and tell others to as well.

    Had a friend with almost the exact situation with you, so it was baffling to hear that it was a more common issue. She recently switched to Canon for her photography business because she didn't want to support Panasonic anymore and it was a good switch. Customer service is better for her there and she was glad to no longer deal with Panasonic's nonsence. Just wanted to add another story on top of the many. Hope you find a better company that treats other content creators right

    I work for a school district fixing student Chromebooks for a living and if I'm going to charge for repairs I need to absolutely without doubt prove that the student caused whatever damage else I get in big, big trouble with either their parents, the superintendent, or both. We have to take pictures and keep documentation on every case, and I feel that's the way all technicians should have to work. None of this "I say you broke it and there's no disputing" bs.

  • @ivanisguerra

    Hey Stephen, I've been a loyal fan of Canon and I'll say that they have great costumer services. For a DSLR recommendation I'd say go with a 5D Mark iii -IV. If that's too expensive there's always the 80D. A simple but good camera for recording

    • @WWTBAMWinner
      @WWTBAMWinner 6 лет назад +5

      The 80D is a spectacular DSLR for video recording, but if 4K is a necessity, the 5D Mark IV is the way to go.

    • @ivanisguerra
      @ivanisguerra 6 лет назад +1

      If they want the best picture, there's always the 1Dx Mark ii. But that might be over kill

      1D-X Mark II lacks the crop factor, though it's six thousand bucks, body only. Doesn't sound worth it.

      Great advice man. I've filmed an entire webseries, YT videos, and a feature film on my Canon over the course of several years AND I bought it used in 2015. Canon makes good product. Not always the most up to speed with the 4K options, but they are getting better. I wholeheartedly recommend Canon!

    because i like looking into things like this it turns out they not only do this for cameras. They do it for EVERYTHING they sell. TV's ,microwaves, phones, everything that has their name on it they treat the same way after purchase poorly. To a slight degree I do feel bad for the employees, because some are probably just doing their job not wanting to be fired. This is definitely a corporate problem and not a manufacturing problem. If the tech is good that means good people made it, if the sales and such are bad that means the one cashing in only want to cash in more.
    which honestly upsets me products should be made for their quality if people like it then make more, but NEVER make something doomed to fail solely so the same people buy and pay more for relatively the same product solely because of shady business practices.
    that is one thing i will give Nintendo credit they make products that are meant to last abuse and damage (note i can not speak on technical support so i can't defend or attack that, but) the fact that most products have been designed in that if dropped more than 30 times they will still last shows far more quality then when you drop your phone and you have to get a new one because the screen is ruined.
    I just....... I'm studying to be an engineer, but when i hear stuff about companies making products fail whether physically or "legally" it hurts me. I don't want something I design need to be designed to fail or abused purely to make an unfair profit. That's not right.

    Wooow that's ridiculous. As long as the camera does not have any noticeable dents and as long as they can confirm that it hasn't been dropped in water then they should always assume that the consumer is not at fault for the damages. It's not like the camera won't turn on it's literally just that something is caught between the lense. How does dust between the lense count as abuse? I'm so baffled right now.

    My dad had a similar experience with the Dell computer company. All the computers we'd ever had were Dells. My sister's first laptop was one. One day the screen of said laptop shattered into a million pieces from the pressure of lightly touching it. Should have been under warranty when it was sent in, but they didn't want to do right by us. So we switched over to HP.

    • @graypetcoyle
      @graypetcoyle 6 лет назад

      Firestar1992 I had a dell for the longest time as a family computer. It was one of those big backed computers that ran off Windows XP I think. It was still under its 5 year warranty, when it got ants (that’s what you get when you have a toddler in the house). We fumed it to get rid of them but they had caused some damage so we sent it in. They REFUSED to repair it, and were even hesitant to send it back. They ended up trying to sell us a new monitor entirely and we had to jump through hoops to get our old computer back... and still pay a service fee because they looked at it. We then also made the switch to HP. They have good products.

    This is the opposite of my recent customer support experience, just last Thursday- not a camera, I’m afraid. My laptop was having a display issue, so I took it in to the Genius Bar and told them what the problem was, and that I thought it was a hardware issue. I have Apple Care, but it’s been less than a year anyway, this is the 2017 MacBook Pro and I got it last July. So they told me the only way it wouldn’t be covered would be if the tech found liquid inside, but I had a keyboard cover so they didn’t think that would happen (it wouldn’t, I’m very careful with any liquids that are on my desk and definitely haven’t spilled anything even on the keyboard cover). They looked at it and ran a preliminary diagnostic, and said that it looked like hardware but had I backed up just in case the tech found a software issue (I backed up before I went to the Apple store, which is just generally a good idea). The guy said that the official time was 7-10 days but for something that looked so simple he thought it wouldn’t be more than 3-5. Sure enough, I got my laptop back Monday morning, three business days later. The lady gave it back, had me open it up to check, and even complimented my LOZ wallpaper. I’ve been using it all week, and it’s working perfectly. That’s how customer support should work, and I’m very sorry that Panasonic has messed it up so badly :(

Here we are protected by the law from stuff like that (and I have studyed the norwegian laws)...And if cases like this happen we have like "a firm" that is watching over the competision in the market and if there is really bad revjues they watch over the firm and do something about it if the firm does not fix it themself. Just hope things work out for you!

    My Mom burned into my skull the idea of "always check the reviews before you buy ANYTHING online" Hell I even look at stuff like a 3-pack of movies I want to buy. See if the packaging is not crap (AKA not using cardboard, actual disc trays, thanks) but mostly I look at unboxings on RUclips. Especially for stuff like game consoles.
    And when I was buying the parts for my first PC build last year, I was sure to talk to people I knew about the best parts for a "gaming" PC (I mostly wanted something better than the craptop I had at the time, but more power never hurt)

    I have a story to share. It’s about a smart TV my family got 2 years ago. It was a Westinghouse TV. We bought it at Best Buy. It worked great for a while. But then out of nowhere it did a thing we called a “color cycle” where it would just display a few different colors on the tv. It took over whatever you were doing on the TV. It didn’t matter if you were watching TV or playing a game when that happened we couldn’t do anything until it stopped.
    At first, it would do that rarely so we didn’t do anything about it. But then it happened more frequently that we thought to try to send it in for repairs. We called the Westinghouse Repair Center and they told us to send them a video of it happening in action and a picture of the receipt from Best Buy. We did that and eventually got a reply from them. They said it would cost the same amount for us to ship it to them as the TV cost to buy it! We said that’s ridiculous! The TV was still under warranty when the problem happened! Since then we haven’t bought a single Westinghouse product.
    Thanks for this video Stephen. It always interests me with stories like this because I had a similar situation. I hope Amazon helps you out with your camera.

    Hey Stephen, my only advice with Sony DLRS cameras is that depending on the model they might overheat after 25 minutes of footage. I had one (I can't remember the specific model, I'm sorry) that every time I filmed around 24/25 minutes it overheated and turned off for about 15 minutes until it was cooled off. The image of the camera was amazing, but that part was annoying and I know you guys film long videos.
    I hear a lot of people saying good thing about Canon DLRS maybe you want to check them out too.. I have a Canon G7X Mark II for youtube and causal vlogging and I love it. I never had a problem with it.
    But I'm sorry you had to deal with this bullshit from Panasonic, I remember watching you talk about it in the Patreon's video and it is still ridiculous... A lot of companies still take consumer service for granted and they don't even realize that that's how you lose loyal costumers. I hope you can find a company you can trust now!

    Man this reminds me of when my phone had a well known problem of endlessly booting. I called AT&T from the store to ask for a replacement. LG who made the phone said they would replace any phone with the issue and just to go through your carrier to have it done. They tried to tell me I abused the phone because of the cheap rubber grip on the back of the phone had torn a little another recognized defect. They tried to make me claim my insurance which was $180. I told them no and send me a new phone. I was on there for an hour on the phone until the manager of the local store came over and said replacement phones don't come with the backs your supposed to use your old one they cant void anything for that. Then I hear oh whoops Im sorry we will send you a new phone. Since LG was replacing them for free AT&T wanted to make a quick buck.

    Pretty much same exact experience with the Panasonic G85, perfect working order and no marks on the outside at all! Took really good care of it and somehow the sensor got a crack in it. Well under Panasonic warranty so I thought I had nothing to worry about. Unfortunately I didn't think about using a third party warranty service (I will from now on though, thanks for the tip). When they got it they said that the price was gonna be around $500 for a repair! So we called them and apparently the "damage voided the warranty" when I explained that I took SUPER good care of it, they gave me a weird discount on the repair so now it would cost around $400....thanks Panasonic...so I bit the bullet and repaired it since it was a little too low to get another camera of the same quality. Not happy at all and will not buy anything else from them...

    Look into the Sony A7 series, they're tiny, but they're amazing! The pro one is kind of expensive, but it is SO worth it! I want to ditch all of my pro stuff for the Sony A7III.

      I should also mention that i am using a Canon 5D MkIII. So not the most portable, but it's great both in photo and video.

    I have a Toyota hybrid car. One day I turned it on and the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree and the gas pedal was super sluggish to make my car go forward. I took it to my mechanic and he said that a couple of the cells in the hybrid battery were not charging all the way and he couldn't fix it and to take it to the dealership. I took it into a Toyota dealer and they did their own diagnostic scan. It came up with cell 7 not being fully charged, so that was dragging the charge down on the rest of the cells to compensate for it. They told me they needed to replace the whole hybrid battery and would do it for me for a total cost of $6035.57 (as if the 56 cents mattered at that point) and they were willing to recommend me over to the sales team if I didn't want to take that option. I was originally going to have them do that, but then I looked into the problem a bit. Apparently it's a not-common problem, but it has pretty consistent symptoms when it does happen. Turns out, if you're willing to put in the time and be careful of being electrocuted you can take the hybrid battery apart and replace each cell. So that's what I did. I got to sit and talk to the technician floor rep after I told the tech guy who did the diagnostic that I didn't want them to fix the problem because he "had to know exactly what [I'm] doing" and informed me that I could be electrocuted. I ended the call with a "I know, electricity bad" and a "I want my car back." and that was it. I bought myself 3 cells (in case some of them didn't hold a charge, good thing too because we cross threaded one of them screwing it back down) and replaced it myself. So a few hours of work, some family bonding time because lifting that battery pack out isn't easy, and $40/cell and my car was good to go.
    Also, if that hadn't worked I could've bought a new battery and fully replaced it myself for a little over $1200. Still nowhere close to the $6000 price tag before.

    Good on you for informing the public on these types of things. People need to do research when making purchases like that. Despite that though, boycotting them really isn't going to do anything hate to break it to ya. While it sucks when stuff like that happens (and it happens constantly and will continue to happen), you're not doing anything by boycotting buying their products because honestly, BIG SHOCKER; companies don't give a fuck about "customer loyalty". The whole "I spend X-amount of dollars with this company" argument, yeah they don't care and they'll continue to make their money so long as the average buyer continues to buy without doing their research and that's just how it is.

    Wow. That is very dumb. I was thinking of investing in a new vlog camera since I've been using the 300 HS ELPH for over 4 years. I've been leaning towards the Canon G7X mk2, but Panasonic was an alternative so I guess Panasonic is completely out of the window.

    That’s unfortunate. And funny (sad), considering I got an email from Panasonic just yesterday asking how I would feel if they opened up pro service centers around the country. I hope you wrote a bunch of emails all the way up the Panasonic chain - maybe try to get that decision overturned or at least help change their obviously predatory policies.
    Also, as a Sony mirrorless owner (a6300), I love their cameras but they overheat like a mofo in 4K. I was actually considering getting a GH5 because those Panasonics are such workhorses. I guess I’ll have to rethink that.

    yup, i am sticking with Canon.
    something similar happened to this JVC camcorder i have, i got it rent to own and i... shocked it (was trying to use it like a go pro while riding my bike) so i sent it to the rent to own place so they could send it to the company, the RTO place ended up just replacing the camera with another one they had cause the company sent a message saying that I "attempted to take it apart". what it was really, the RTO had messily engraved their store name on the bottom of the camera before renting it out so the company saw it as an attempt to pop it open with a flathead :/

    Unfortunately, I've never really been a camera person. I have a waterproof Kodak that my mom got me back in 2011 for a trip to Florida, but that's really it.
    As for customer service, the only time I can think of that I had to deal with warranty and repairs was back when Amazon was first releasing their Kindle E-Readers. I got one of the second generation models for Christmas, but we didn't bother with a case at the time. I started taking it to school with me, and one day I got bumped into between classes, landed on my messenger bag, and the screen got cracked. Luckily it was still under warranty and Amazon just outright replaced the whole thing. We also learned from that and ordered a case, which was delivered a couple days before we got the replacement. Served me well after that, and I even still have the Kindle today, though I only ever use it when the power is out long enough that I don't wanna risk my tablet dying.

    Having worked for a service center I can tell you that dust will get inside any retractable lens. As the lens extends and retracts there has to be an exchange of air. If the camera is kept in your pocket, dust will adhere to the the lens body and eventually get inside. I can fully understand how you feel, but this is not an issue that only Panasonic cameras experience.

    I highly recommend Canon cameras. I have one of the PowerShot models of digital cameras.
    I have a few very positive customer service stories to make you feel better:
    So the first one, I pre-ordered a signed and drawn in novel by one of my favorite authors from a small Virginia bookstore. Several unfortunate things happened that winter season pertaining to the delivery of numerous of those novels. I kept checking my shipping status and it said "shipped" for a long time. Eventually, kind of annoyed and confused, I called the bookstore and explained that it's been a while and I haven't received the book when all of the other orders should have been delivered already. So, they checked the order and were equally confused. I live in PA so it should have only taken a few days. Luckily, they found an extra book (odd because there weren't supposed to be extras) and shipped it to me, free of charge. It came within a week.
    The next two deal with Kohls. I love Kohls and the amazing savings we can get from them. Well, first, I ordered two different types of bags to put small laundry items in to keep them from disappearing or catching on other clothes. One type came, the other got lost in shipping and never arrived. I talked with an online customer service person via a live chat and they refunded the order and gave my mom some points towards her next kohls purchase.
    The second snafu with Kohls came when I ordered some jeans. Everything came on time and I was happy, until I took the pants out of the bag. They still had the security tag on. You know, the magnetic ones that are pinned to the pants? Onward to Kohls live chat customer service. Explained the situation and the guy on there offered me to send it back or take it to a Kohls store. For my troubles, he put a bunch of rewards points on my mom's kohls card. I took it to a store and successfully got it removed. Yes, it did set off the alarms when I walked inside. The cashier lady was surprised I got a security tag in an online order.

    Better than Best Buy! 100$ for a warranty that you can only use once a year, charge you 50 regardless for handling it, and 100 dollars to replace the hard drive regardless of what the problem is. 50 to back it up. If that still doesn’t work, you have to take it in again for another 50, plus whatever they charge to actually take a shot at the problem, which may still not be fixed at that point. And every time it goes into the shop it takes two and a half weeks.

    I had a Acer PC when I was younger, the computer case was small and crowded, so it was bad at cooling.
    I get the display card was replaced probably once per one or two summer at a local computer store for quite some time, due to overheating/"burning" the graphics card.
    Later I replaced the PC with a HP Pavilion Slimline with a larger case thus better ventilation and never had to deal with that again.
    TL;DR version: Go get a PC with good cooling rather than small size, could save you money.
