    I have a 1955 ranch and I’m not opening up any walls to have an open concept. I’ve never liked open concept. I prefer to keep my home the way it was built. It has a nice flow to it. I’m remodeling my kitchen and am in the planning stages but almost ready to order everything quartz countertops, and honed marble subway tile backsplash. White cabinets. I may do black accents - I haven’t decided on that yet.

      I enjoy open concept, but ONLY if the house is large enough and there is ample separation between the main television area a kitchen. I once spent Thanksgiving where the banging of pots and pans was constantly competing with the football game!

      I agree with you. I do not want to see my messy kitchen from the living room. I do not want to hear the clanging of pots or smell the smells all throughout the house.

      Sounds nice! Flow is extremely important- Not every house is suited to open concept living and forcing it can definitely be a mistake.

      @@hsdesignstudio You should see some of the new condominium plans in France. They all combine the dining, cooking and living area within < 300 sq/ft. Some room layouts are hilariously bad with sharp angles, utility colomns and giant balcony doors which swing inwards. It's puzzle to furnish. It must be nice having a separate square room to furnish a kitchen 😅

    • @user-xg6zz8qs3q
      @user-xg6zz8qs3q 2 года назад +3

      @Patti The nice thing about closed kitchens is that they're out of sight. You don't have to worry too much about getting the best materials and finishes. I have researched countertops and came to the conclusion that quartz countertops are unethical since the workers who cut and finish quartz countertops get numerous respiratory diseases. It has something to do with the chemicals in the resin which binds the quartz. It's so bad that some French companies stopped producing quartz countertops. Granite countertops are still a fantastic option, also consider soapstone if you're in the USA. Heck, laminate works well too and will save you money.

    Our kitchen is separate from the living and dining room, but is easily accessed. I actually like it that way. The acoustics are much better so different conversations can occur easily. It is a large enough and well designed kitchen that when family is visiting we all still gather and prep the meal together. We eat together in a nice neat and clean dining room. That happens once I clear it off. (now it is my paperwork area) My husband kicked me out of the office March of 2020. We both he goes back to work downtown at some point. 😕

    I had white appliances in my former kitchen. Over time, some of the panels and trim turned yellow. Looked bad. I switched to stainless steel and it always looked good, for years. Newer models have fingerprint free surfaces. However, I don’t like stainless sinks, nor do I like the white porcelain. I like the textured sinks. Right now I’m in between homes and am in a condo with a separate kitchen. Hate it. I’ll take open concept any day.

    I understand the idea of adding wood for warmth in the kitchen. I’m just not loving that light wood mixed with white..I keep thinking it’ll grow on me but it hasn’t. I find white kitchens with deeper wood tones much more attractive. Is it just me?

    • @hsdesignstudio

      Wood tones are a personal preference. I find it less about the depth and more about how the two are paired together.

    How about getting rid of stoves. Go with induction cooktops and ovens that in in walls or somewhere else. That is what I do and will never go back. Induction is faster on/off, safer to touch, no fumes, and easy to clean. Hallelujah!

    Subway tile backsplash?
    Are you kidding?
    You LIKE spending hours of your precious time scrubbing grout lines with a toothbrush?
    No, thank you.
    Smooth, solid surface of some sort. I'm planning to use a granite backsplash of a type contrasting with the granite countertop, say, a white or light gray backsplash over a dark anorthositic gabbro countertop.
    Mixing metals? Does a hammered copper sink with a bronze faucet, stainless appliances and a black porcelain cooktop count?
    Countertop height? How about setting the wall oven below a 48-inch high countertop, split level next to a standard 36-inch countertop for the rest of the kitchen? You don't have to bend down to pull the heavy stuff out of the oven, and the high-level countertop puts the can opener, toaster-oven, and coffee-maker out of the way.
    I like the idea of pop-up electric outlets in the countertops.

    • @hsdesignstudio
      @hsdesignstudio  2 года назад +1

      I have never scrubbed my backsplash grout. First it's sealed, and second it isn't white grout. The porcelain subway tiles wipe right off. Yes I like a solid slab for backsplashes as well, but I don't have the money to run that all the way to my 9 1/2' ceilings. I wouldn't put granite in my kitchen. But this is MY opinion, and it's okay (and good) we have our own opinions about these choices.
      There are lots of ways to make a kitchen your own, that's the beauty of design as well as having our own taste. At the end of the day, these are my thoughts, not something I am trying to get everyone else to make their own. When I work with clients, I design for them and their wants.

    Design trend I hate: having a big old honking kitchen island that is always in the way, doesn't allow you to back up and turns your kitchen into skinny passageways. I hate them!!!!

    • @hsdesignstudio
