Truly powerful stuff, its an odd feeling to realize you are witnessing a modern legend in real time, in the flesh. im getting goose bumps just thinking about it.

That’s interesting, because that entire section was not in the original video, and replaces what was in fact MY favorite part of the whole video… camera inching ever so slowly through a grey room toward a man seated with his back to the camera, only revealing his face at the end. That was the most minimalist and exquisite segment of a music video I think I’ve seen. Some other sections of this version were also re-cut or edited. I don’t know. The original was edgier and grittier and for me more breathtaking. I’ll have to watch this version a few more times to appreciate what you’re seeing here. I think that on first viewing, I’m just missing what is no longer here.

I discovered Kamasi Washington by chance from Jazz with Eric in The Evening (God rest his soul) on WGBH Radio in Boston. While at one of the lowest points of my life in 2018, I was just out driving to forget my problems for a while, Eric played this song and I just sobbed. It was a brisk late summer evening and for that 15ish minutes my life changed, I was empowered. The music really helped me, and propelled me through all my successes, i'm thriving and the happiest i've been in a long time. I owe so much of it to this music

I am writing this because I do not know a single person who I can share these feelings with, the feelings that this song really make me feel.
To give you some context, this song was played at the end of a very good show called Homeland, as a symbol of the love that the protagonist had for her people. And ultimately, this song is an expression of the absolute love I feel, during brief moments of my life. Love that is exploding and over-reaching. Pulsating, throbbing, and seemingly bursting away with freedom.
I wish I could share the feelings this song makes me feel about the people I love that I could never express myself. When I can, I love them so deeply, so absolutely. All of them is in the light, all their blemishes and imperfections brought to the notice of the eye, and still, they are so strikingly beautiful, and how I wish I could tell them, in nothing more simpler, that I love them.
That's all this song makes me feel. It's a lot. And that's why it will always be a special song. I hope my comment makes sense, for the readers on the comment section of this song are the only ones who I would hope could understand this.

I was listening to this song and reading your comment around 7pm yesterday. I did not understand what you were saying. But I also understood it at the same time.
After a few seconds, I decided to go take a shower only to be called to a family meeting in the dinning room by my mom. She told us that my father showed her rat poison and threatened to use it. Could be for himself or my sisters and mom and me.
This is obviously serious and we had to go to the police . I am writing this at 2am . We just got back. When questioned he denied everything.
The name of the song is truth. And I learned something today: I learned to love and respect the truth. But I also learned that there are some people who hate and disrespect the truth. And it's the latter that seems to always win.
You spoke of love and how you wanted to express this astronomical feeling in simple words to those you felt love for. While I laid down soaking my pillow questioning myself how I person I loved could want to betray me like this.
If this is not duality then I don't know what is😂

God dammit, tears every time... I can't look away and have to watch the entire thing. Such a powerful piece, and having grown up in LA county, the visuals just really hit home for me. It's pretty abstract, but I can't help but take away from it the importance of family, how sometimes we don't always agree, but in the end, we love each other and are a community with so much life and diversity. So glad they brought back this video.

The new middle segment is beautiful and all, but I really loved the old one, though I can't explain why. There was something about that slowly zoom in of the camera in a still scene contrasting but also resonating with the increasing intensity of the music that really touched me, like a sort of contemplative / meditating state.

How I feel when I listen to this music
An old man, recalling a life full of twists and turns. When he tried to share all his current feelings with others, no one could understand, and no one could listen to the end. Some people even fell asleep after hearing it, and the old man also knew that no one could understand it. Really understand him, despite this he still enjoys sharing his life story because he is also savoring his life while recounting it

This video has been gone for quite some time, but is now back. There is one big difference I can recall. During the solo section, the only shot before the video dissapeared was a camera slowly moving up to a man reading a newspaper (shot in black and white). Can't complain about the new version though, it's still very beautiful.

That was the most iconic section of the the whole original video. Still, I agree, it’s a really good and important and spiritual journey, in a music video.

Who gives a fuck? The walking dead is just a sad, generic mongrelisation of Romero movies and Lost.

First time I head this song it was my 20th birthday and I was alone at my house. My mother was in a treatment center a few states away and my partner was in another city. I was mad suicidal and just wishing I could end my life. I heard about this song while browsing fb and saw the afropunk article. It gave me something to live for, at least for this 14 mins.

It is a genre of music that is almost 100 years old yet this still sounds fresh and original

not really. sounds just like anything made in the late 60s/70s

No, not at all. This song is using modern harmonies. Look at Ascension where the goal is to basically not use a harmony at all, and also albums like Bitches Brew where everything is based of super exotic and weird scales. This isn't like the jazz from the 60s and 70s at all, since todays jazz has had influence from Soul, RnB and hiphop, those genres hadnt been around long enough for jazz to take influence during that time.

    • @RyanRenteria
      @RyanRenteria 7 лет назад +11

there isnt anything very modern about the harmony here. its a very common two chord, diatonic vamp the entire time. Weather report's "Black Market" uses the same two chords for its coda/jam section, as just one example. Late 60's and early 70's jazz took a huge influence from soul and RnB. have you listened to anything after 1965? also miles davis was influenced by hip hop in the late 80s. and herbie hancock made rokit in 1983....
the strings and choir aren't doing anything that wasnt already done 100+ years ago in the classical world.

yeah, I was wrong about the modern harmony thing, didn't think much about it. my point was that this doesnt sound like everything (or anything to qoute your own comment) made in the late 60s/70s, since you still have early fusion like bitches brew and the start of free jazz which isn't really that close to this. Even tho I am 100% certain that those genres has influenced this, this still doesn't "sound" like it. Pardon for my use of "RnB "as I think of it more as the type of Off The wall michael jackson type of RnB(Probably closer to thriller tbh) and even more modern RnB that is pretty much what a lot of people would just call hip-hop nowadays. and yes, I know that davis and herbie was influenced by hip-hop, but that is completely irrelevant as I am talking about the 60-70

Weather Report might have used similar chords but this doesn't 'sound' like Weather Report at all. The choir in the middle of the song and again toward the end is a nice touch that is unique to Kamasi. Ryan is correct when he says that strings and choirs were around 100 years ago. However, Kamasi assembled this in his own way, which doesn't feel forced. The sound texture for me is warmer than Weather Report. In short, this song feels like Kamasi Washington, not Weather Report or Miles or anything else from the sixties, other than the fact that he uses chords that others have used. I'd be surprised if Weather Report was the first to use those chords. They probably got it from something they heard themselves.
