I think it's safe to say that with people like Kamasi around, the future of jazz looks pretty good
Kamasi, Thundercat, Terrance Martin, Miles Mosley, and all the LA cats are like the resurgence of jazz in a popular platform
The Krieg gotta shout out Cam Graves... Planetary Prince was my favorite album of 2017
I'd say so too, Mr. Jazz. He's selling out shows...that is a great sign!
And he has a signature sound...
Nice, the best part of youtube comments is finding new artists.
Kamasi Washington (t sax), Dontae Winslow (tp), Ryan Porter (tb), Cameron Graves (p), Brandon Coleman (org), Miles Mosley (b), Ronald Bruner + Tony Austin (d) and Allakoi Peete + Kahlil Cummings (perc) in 2018.
Don't think I've ever listened to a 9 minute long song three times in a row. Unbelievable.
havent listened to jazz this much in YEARS until I discovered mister Kamasi. goddamn this is so good
❤🎉 thank you for the very happy creation
Hypnotic! Like the whole album this song is an example for higher art of ceative jazz music. THX.
Absolutely adore this, not only the ode to Nina Simone with the makeup but hearing the instruments doing their thing over a 13/8 time with Kamasi sounding amazing. Goddamn Kamasi, you've done it again.
Edit: Just found out it was Jenn Nkiri, the director who was inspired by Nina Simone for the women's makeup. Amazing!
Usually brown skin tones are a nightmare to capture on film
But whomever filmed this.. holy crap, that's absolutely perfect.
The lighting, the cameras used, angles, or whatever is responsible for this extremely crisp image did an amazing service to these ladies.
Legitimately impressed with how good this looks, where even in Hollywood movies or model photoshoots they royally screw up the tones.
Actually said "wow" outloud.
If "Black is Beautiful" became a music video. I was literally hypnotised while watching this high.
For those who, like me, were intrigued by the time signatures, i think it's 5/16 5/16 5/16 5/16 6/16 = 26/16 = 13/8
can also be counted as 7/8 6/8 but its easier in subgroups of 16th notes.
With any measures over 10 I usually restart the count. So for this I'd go up to 10/8 and then add 3. I like how you broke it down, though!
You GEM!!! I love you.
Thank you dude.
I count it as 3 measures of 3/4 + 1 measure of 4/4
I count it as 4 + 4 + 4 + 1 and it works fine as well
This is an AMAZING Afro-Cubanization of Freddie Hubbard’s classic Blue Note track, The West Coast Get-Down Indeed!
Man I have discovered some UNBELIEVABLE music during this pandemic
This entire DOUBLE album is so amazing. I started out with Earth I’m like that some of best stuff I ever heard. And then I heard HEAVEN…
Jazz is def on life support but thanks to artist like this of my generation, it will not die without a fight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song came to mind in the middle of rumination. That's proof that Kamasi is King
Wow. I think the film-making choices here are terrific. The central character remains center frame regardless of how much information is conveyed on screen at a given time but by having her eyes closed juxtaposing the other performers existing more immediately in the time and space around them, the way the center woman moves about almost allows the music to inform her emotional relationship to the space she occupies and how it differs from the two other women. Essentially, she's with them in body alone. Screams Kubrick. Love it.
Jenn Nkiru is such a brilliant director, check out her own short film Rebirth Is Necessary it's brilliant.
Mesmerizing, both sound and vision.
I love how the background harmony slowly changes, note by note, from the beginning to the end
"Black is u, Black is me, Black is us, Black is Free" -Ish
i got the same vibe
Digable Planets okay okay, love all but I'm truly mesmerized by the young lady in the front
Not sure if this is about Compton, NOI, 3 Marys, or just Black culture, periodt🚬🧐
Art for the Eye, Ears, Mind & Soul!
in this digital era visualisation plays a big role! so music clips becoming one reality with the music and Jazz as well can be more than sound, it can also adopt a visual elements and this video and Kamasi prove that.
what is most incredible to me is that labels are spending money on a jazz video! I love it!
So beautiful, hypnotic and mesmerising. I love the intensity in her calmness and the singular take is simply phenomenal. Bravo
Got to give it up for them listening to that tambourine for 8min straight lol
@@coochchili217, that tambourine was likely going crazy to some gospel music.
Lucky tambourine...
Already know😅
Dontae Winslow murdering that trumpet solo... and that sounds like Ronald Bruner Jr on drums? To whomever is running this channel -- a concerning question : why is the ENTIRE video production team is listed in the description, but not one musician is named? 72K views when I wrote this... that's 72K people who have no idea about the men behind the music. The cat that brought the director water is named -- but the band ain't? Wack.
That's Tony on drums. I agree man Dontae makes the difference in this tune.
@@katemeran Agreed!
Pretty sure it's Tony Austin on drums, but I could be wrong. He does have a bad instructional clip where he plays this groove though.
as im sure jazz fans are aware, its pretty rare to find a mainstream source that makes a point to credit every talented musician that performs in their content. but jazz fans will make a point to figure it out
I think that's a joke made even funnier by the entire video being concentrated on the face of a beautiful woman likely taken from the congregation of a church.
Yeessss love this track.
"Hub-Tones"
Freddie Hubbard: Trumpet
October 10, 1962 released on the Blue Note label. Nice cover. 💛
Wow. Just wow. The complexity of this song's composition is insane! Love it!
tenor sax (Kamasi) beginning at 4:43 breakin' fresh ground in the unique licks/rhythmic phrasing dept....1st solo by trumpeter Dontae Winslow, btw
The experimentation with Latin Jazz on this album is pretty great.
Sun Ra returns. I love it!
How doesn’t this have 3 million views?!!!!
So much influence... there is a sea of inspirations over flowing... as the evaporation of past legends have now precipitated in to new fusion rehydrating the jazz percussion scene... jazz for ever will be king of soul through polyrhythms...
Those piano progressions and chords are mental, insta fan!
Waouh 🌐🎵🎼❤️❤️❤️❤️ époustouflant 👌👌👏👏👏
The visual is a STATEMENT.. music is KILLIN..
I was waiting on the choir...love the vocal chords on your songs. Reminds me of Marvin Gaye background vocals.
the rhinestones, the piano - I was hooked in the 1st 3 seconds
This is everything! The King of Jazz!
My goodness... I’m enchanted by her trance state! This is the most compelling music video I’ve ever seen!
Thrilling enchanting and powerful! Such a range of intensity with the music, the cinematography and the choreography, excellence!
Kamasi Washington and Jenn Nkiru! Wow! thanks
Such Negritude 🔥🔥🔥
A seismic aural delight - one of my favourite tracks from the Heaven and Earth record that I play often - thank you Kamasi. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
red black and green , 1 love to the mother land
Well damn...this takes me back to the 70s cinematography. Well done! Well done!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Artistically compelling video to this song....it should win an award next year!
GOOD JOB JENN NKIRU ! LOVE
So beautiful art, the song and the videoclip
Stunning sounds, stunning visuals and stunning women.
Heavy groove. Can't wait to finally see him in a few days.
Like the Hippie would say in the 60ties ," It's so far out it's in. really Groovy man you dig! The cat with the horn is playing like the cat they called, The lip.
Magic.....
This is truly a great musical as well as visual experience. Reminiscent of the past yet authentically futuristic simultaneously. Very dope and inspirational.
The dream come true. Wonderful!
This the best song I have heard for while. Absolutely fantastic.
I hear Bitches Brew. KW is a story teller and writes it as he feels it. Great directing too. Great film.
Anyone who says they were born in the wrong generation or think all modern music is shit clearly haven't listened to this.
Love this video.
and THAT is how u listen to jazz
It’s Nation Time!
Intense and relaxing simultaneously. 👏 bravo!
Damn. this video is genius... beautifully structured... a perfect complement to the music.
What a hell of jam
This is easily his best work
Just WOW!!! Thank you!!
YESS IM SO GLAD HE RECORDED THIS STUDIO OMG
my god I love this video.
once the edibles kicked in , it all made sense
Lol. Nice...I’m just now realizing this song could be a nod to Compton aka Hub City. But, obviously there’s more to the message than merely that reference. Clearly, this has elements of Funk infused with some Free Jazz. KW is truly a mastermind.
Its sounds so avant garde and it's amazing!!
This is a beautiful work of art .
Hermosos Tonos, hermosa Piel.
Heavily entrancing.
Nation Time!!!!!
That was Beautiful!
Reminds me of the famous olympics Black Power salute of 1968. Tommie Smith 1st place in the center risked his life by raising his arm while the national anthem was playing. Later on in his autobiography he mentioned it was rather a human right salute. Very powerful Image. Well that was just my first impression
Communist party salute
Hail Hail to Kamasi Washington!!! Part of a documentary!!!! all the good stuff is off the radar...as it should be..you must seek it out!!!!
OMG!!!! LOVE!!
Woooow!!!! Poooorra!!!!!!! Fantastic!!!!!
Just, wow!
This cat is DOPE ,and the videos as well
this ART is a DREAM come true. two GIANT VISIONARY anchors coming together to gift the world, eyes ears soul and consciousness with THIS! JENN and KAMASI, woah.
I AM grateful and moved. NATION TIME. "Directed by Jenn Nkiru" = my heart melting .
Me recuerda a "Fire", de Joe Henderson... great work Kamasi, a pleasure as always. Thank you all.

This looks like a scene from a Chester Himes' "Harlem Cycle" novel!!
fela kuti vibes
Yurp
@CIA Defector the head decoration of the dancers reminds me of Sun Ra's
Yes Sir!
So true
True art words spoke by sound and images...dope!!!!
The Holly trinity! John Coltrane, Sun Ra Arkestra, Fela Kuti!
reminds me the era of Black Jazz Records
I am listening to Doug Carn's Infant Eyes now because of your mention. Thank you, god bless.

The model's name is SUMMER PEARL, a London based singer/songwriter
