An alternate strategy I learned about from a UNT professor was to derive a set of voicings whose top notes were the diatonic scale notes and whose root note was always the root of the chord. Take Gma7… the root of every voicing is G …top notes would be: G A B C# D E F#.. you bypass the sour drop 2 voicing with the maj7 in the root . You can also solo using these inversions by using them as building blocks for chord solos!
