- An investigation is underway after a banner plane made an emergency landing on a bridge in Ocean City, New Jersey, Monday afternoon.
The incident was first reported at about 12:38 p.m. on the 9th Street Bridge, which connects Ocean City and Somers Point in Cape May County.
Landon Lucas, an 18-year-old flying for Paramount Air Service, reported that his plane began to experience engine trouble as he was flying near Steel Pier in Atlantic City, officials said.

"The pilot? Only 18 years old!"
Uncommon, but not unheard of. 18 year olds can be very skilled and competent pilots. Many that flew U.S. aircraft in WWI and WWII could be pretty young. Doesn't mean they aren't skilled enough to fly.
"He was the only one on board."
Not uncommon for a banner plane. It's a small aircraft, all you're doing is flying a banner around. There isn't always a need for a co-pilot if the person flying is skilled enough. Seeing as how he knew exactly what to do in the situation, and managed to safely land an aircraft on a small causeway bridge within a gap of traffic? Seems skilled to me. It's not like the engine failure was his fault. Just because he's young doesn't mean he isn't a good pilot.
"It's almost like it was landed there purposefully!"
Well, it's not like he landed it there safely by ACCIDENT? Sure, the plane isn't supposed to be on a bridge. But he made the decision to land there because of an engine failure. He didn't just plop it down, get out and say, 'Whoops! Didn't mean to.' with no issues with the aircraft whatsoever.

To all those talking about his age. The minimum age to hold a flight certificate is 16 in the US so you can actually be a pilot before you can legally drive here. Chances are that he has been flying for a few years and was pretty well aware of what he was doing in the emergency because this kind of landing is something that only comes from experience. Most people posting on here can't even drive their cars let alone do what this kid did.
He better get right back in the cockpit or he will be scared forever.
Yes, also if someone is having trouble swimming or almost drowning, and get saved, you should bring them right back in the water
@@Julia-kq9qo yes or they’ll forever be scared, glad you got the point 👍🏼
Yet, some people won't back off that easy from something they love to do.
My step dad was taking off in a Cessna and the wing spar on the left wing snapped and the plane went into a uncontrolled diving turn. He survived the crash but the plane caught on fire and the doors were jammed. He had to smash out the windshield with his forearm and get out of the plane that way. He was really lucky to have survived and really shaken up. He didn't get right back in the plane and he has not flown in the 30 years since.
He flew at 11:00 am. the next day.
ATTENTION PEOPLE* It is completely LEGAL for an aircraft to land on a freeway during emergencies.
Pilots will try to use freeway as a last resort. So it’s likely he/she ran out of options. Very good pilot.
