Actually there is an alternative ending being the sunbeam says that there is to much Junk blocking there way to land (this one is if you disable the gun)
problem with that statement is, it did very likely contain thousands of crew members. the lifepods are what remained, and those are the survivors. its kinda like saying only 2 people were in an office complex because that was the amount of survivors after a terrorist attack
Everyone in there died though cuz the gun shot it so there's no point in making it land but now you can actually save the sunbeam for real but u won't see it land and you won't get rescued they just won't come
the sunbeam is not scripted in any part of the game to land , its only task in game is blowing up, editing the game code is a violation of property rights, this why russia cant make air defense systems
