Highlighting and underlining may not serve much of a purpose when used exclusively. But they do have their uses and purposes when combined with other study methods. For example, I use highlighting like bookmarks on points that I’d like to include in a research paper or to make flash cards for when I’m done reading a particular section. It saves time having to look back through everything you’ve read to find it. It’s a timesaver and a smart referencing tool when used properly. So, do NOT toss out that highlighter!
i find highlighting as vital to get through heavy meaty papers, with my struggles on focusing. This is the opposite of what been of the highest value to me personally. Some of the tips my therapist recommended for technical reading is to print out when possible the texts, highlight and underline as you read along, and write questions, notes and also summarise each of the majour chapters on the paper.

9:57 Hi Zach, my name is Suwadee, Som Suwadee. And I am a serial procrastinator 👋🏼 I’m also annoyed to wake up seeing this guy on the internet already pointed out 8 of my biggest mistakes! The audacity, right? Anyway, this 30 something yr-old MBA student is thankful for your study tips.
Hey Zack, I have a question regarding reading material then proceeding with flash cards. Anki has many great premade decks, however where would you fit in making your own cards since your only reading the material once? Would you recommend making the cards as you read the chapter?
I would use premade decks if at all possible, if not, unfortunately it might be best to make the cards but don’t overkill, you should be personally making MAYBE 20-50 cards a day, anything more and it’s too much. I maxed out at 100 new cards a day with premade decks. I would make the cards while reading / watching the video if I had too.
I was waiting for an another study method video finnally i got it thanks for the brilliant video one day i remember when i was in 6th grade i would rank in my class between 20 to 30 after implementing the spaced repetion and active recall in 7th grade i used to rank 1st or 2nd or 3rd and the studybmethods still woroks for me in my univeristy in kings college London ❤❤❤
Hey Zach, love your stuff. Fellow med student here: There's a neuroscientist by the name of Dr. Srini Palay that might have the answer to your hypothesis on listening based learning. Check him out; i can see y'all's content going hand in hand in hand.
Hi Zach! I find it quite difficult reviewing cards on specific topics with the Anking deck especially because I'm a first year med student ,and I haven't covered alot of topics. How do I make the most out of Anking?
Unsuspend cards based off topics you’ve reviewed, max at 100 new cards a day, check your settings (I have guides on this), do all your reviews every day
You should see my highlighter art! I mark..basically everything in yellow that I just read, then the semi important stuff with pencil, then the actual important stuff in red - I tried to stop that (I constantly buy new yellow highlighters lol), but my brain just won’t have it 🙆🏻♀️
I wonder how you do Flashcards without any kind of summarizing? I always read my textbook first, then I write down questions and corresponding answers and afterwards I put all my questions from norion to Anki. But formulating questions takes so much time if there are 400 pages in the book. Any tips?
It’s tough if you are making your own flashcards, I used premade flash card decks - turning a 400 page book into flashcards sounds like a too difficult task unless is the only book for an entire year or something
Dear Zach, thanks for this great advice! I really love all of your videos! Now that you have pointed out the new add-on of amboss, would you recommend sticking with Amboss (only), i.e. for reviewing materials, using flash cards, and doing practice questions? Or do you recommend a combination of several different resources? I have actually studied medicine in Germany. So I’m used to study with Amboss. Im now about to study for Step 1. But I haven’t decided on the recourses yet. I thought about 1. Zanki/Amboss for flash cards, 2. First Aid or Amboss + Pathoma for reading, and 3. URWORLD or Amboss for questions. I would be thankful for any advice!
I didn't expect a video about study after the last video you made.I expected a video like having conversion with a Spanish person. But still VERY HAPPY❤😊 for this one.keep up the good work👍🎉
I have a question please if anyone can help me, how can i get an Anki Deck for my university because a lot saying for me the Curriculum is deferent between turkey and america
@@khudijaanees4060 So what's the point of villainizing it so much? Highlighting and Underlining is a great way of last-minute revision when you have exam the next morning and you wanna overview stuff one last time. This also takes advantage of the spaced repetition method. The more you see it the better you remember. Especially for engineering folks like me who have to memorize specific bits of info like formulas, procedures of solving a problem etc.

Did you just highlight the conclusion of the study that argues that highlighting is ineffecient?
And that’s one way to study for your test…. If you have a textbook that have a summary.
Reading comprehension is not the only reason to underline (or highlight). It is super useful for later source citation and reference flagging.
Agreed, my point is highlighting for learning isn’t an effective strategy compared to other techniques
Exactly, that study with the two underlining groups misses the point

Hey Zack, I have a question regarding reading material then proceeding with flash cards. Anki has many great premade decks, however where would you fit in making your own cards since your only reading the material once? Would you recommend making the cards as you read the chapter?
I usually read, understand what I'm reading and then proceed to do the flashcards. That way I make sure I do good, useful ones.
@@g.k61 Thanks, Im going to give it a shot! It just seems inefficient to go back then make flashcards after reading but I'll test it out :)
