How does the cognitive switch differ for different IQ levels? There should be a Nobel prize for teaching a better way to study. Justin would surely win. 🏆🙏
1. Trust your brain by making the cognitive switch from **juggle mode** of holding information to **synthesizing mode** of grouping together information. 2. Take less notes, leaving you more time to group information and forcing you to think through the ideas more deeply. *Trust your brain* Your job is to take in information so that your brain can *process* it. It's not to hold as much information as possible. So when you write notes immediately after listening, you leave minimal time for your brain to synthesize and reason through the information, which is where the learning takes place. You must rather **delay** your note taking. You will run into a difficulty, though. As you delay more and more, you juggle more and more information in your head, and writing these becomes more and more effortful with little gain in learning. But at a certain level of delay, you hold so much information that you give up on *juggle mode* and cognitively switch to *synthesizing mode*. You group together information into groups of concepts. By connecting information together, your brain is organizing it in a way that makes sense. The information becomes encoded so it's easier to recall. As you make the switch, the effort of note-taking goes down, but the amount of learning shoots up. *Take less notes* Wordier notes cause less retention. Yet we stick to it because of the **illusion of learning**. Sparser notes: - Leave more time for you to listen and reflect on the ideas. - Force you to think through ideas more deeply in the need to be succinct. We want to transition to mindmaps to represent the connections between the ideas rather than have to write them down. To transition from linear sentence or bullet-point notes to mindmaps, practice in your free time condensing the linear notes you've taken. 1. Version 1: Convert the wordy notes into a sparser version without losing the essence. 2. Version 2: Convert Version 1 to represent the connections between ideas visually. And then go from there into full mindmaps.

Justin confused me by saying juggling information hinders learning, but also recommending delaying note-taking. If we delay, we still need to hold the information, which leads to the same juggling.

That makes all the sense. All you do when is writing every word down without processing it is just a tentative of copying what is being said/written. You don't give your brain enough time to connect the words, to find a meaning between them, to think of analogies, etc

This is why I hated university. There was never any time to process information, it was just fired at you and you better get it all down because after one lecture you are immediately on to the next lecture. Good luck trying to remember an entire day's worth of lectures at 6pm in a noisy library.
I'm about to lose my mind over my Chemistry studies and Justin is just-in time. I watched one of your older videos yesterday on how to read more quickly and effectively with the Sub-Vocalisation, Grouping and Pausing, and I tried it out and I was skimming through entire paragraphs like it was a breeze of air and actually remembering dates and the names of Russian chemists and a bunch of content that would just normally overload my brain and make me thirsty from thinking. I'm also doing psychology studies and they are a lot harder to remember facts with flashcards, because lots of the psychology content, especially social-experiments are interconnected. So I'm hoping this video will help me with turning my currently 84 (☠) need-to-learn flashcards on experiments into mind maps that I can visualise and simplify.
He's got a video on learning Chemistry specifically, it's more of a live session/presentation that will maybe be helpful. Can probably find it easy if you search for it. There's also a 1-2 hours livestream of him learning Psychology (don't remember what level) on the ICanStudy channel.
10:45 Hmmm very interesting analogy. And I can put more clothes in my wardrobe (brain) if I fold them, instead of packing everything together I just cleaned and put it all at once.... It won't fit and I would need to take it out and start all over again. Even if something does fit, I wouldn't know where to find what I wantt. I must have a place only for socks and other only for jackets.... the informations must have sense and your organize it just like your wardrobe. Maybe you think it makes sense to put jackets and jeans closer to each other because they have the same color, or whatever. You find connections the same way.
@@suhareb9252 LOL, the like helps the YT channel, but I use it as a marker that I have listened to/watched the video. I am not obliged to use the like button on only what I truly value.
But to have all the good content of the original notes and a teachers wonderful work of assembling it and not loosing any information. Say from excellent RUclips videographers how do we capture all their content as to create a library for those who come after us??? How do you document your study and take in new and contradictory info??!
I cabt wait for step 5😢😢😢😢 Mindmap is a thing for ne now, thanks to you. But i still belive there is a missing gap.. working everyday to raise enough money to finally buy your course.
In my opinion word drop type1 is for more remembering stuff And type 2 is for stuff like organic chemistry that has a lot of connects inbetween them. These connections may confuse you in examination if you are not clear about them
You go from higher order to lower order You have these groups so that the isolated information fit in more easily and then you interleave your practice containing different levels of learning to check for any gaps and details that are too isolated are chucked into flashcards Your comment is wrong, you need to watch justin's other videos
I feel some of us do this naturally just cause we're too lazy to take too many notes 😂😂😂 Jokes aside, this is a very insightful and useful video! I've fallen into the learning trap myself a few times and I still have a lot to learn on how to be more efficient
The main reason I have trouble taking notes isn’t because I don’t trust my brain or that I just don’t know how, but that usually the professors are moving onto another topic while I’m trying to process and rewrite the information that I was just given into a way that I a.) understand the concept and b.) will understand what I meant in my notes later on I default to only taking notes on things that feel important or seem like part of the big idea
So I accidentally started doing this with my linear note taking in an effort to get more out of reading/studying starting to understand their might be a slight difference between the two 😅. With delayed note taking, and mind mapping I'll be an awesome ATC in no time.
i use a speech to text tool called otter whenever I'm watching an educational video or an in person lecture and transfer the text file that's been translated into obsidian/ storage so that i can review it later. however it does seem like a crutch, when i could just use my brain and summarize it.
Where to start studying from, should I start with testing itself without knowing the content or go through the text book or notes then do mind mapping then flashcards and then come to questions. What exactly is the order. How many study techniques do you know of or teach in your program. Jspark program - student accelerator is looking very similar to me, i am confused about what to buy. Anyways any jspark viewers here🖐🏼🙌🏼
would you say it's okay to wait until the lecture is over as opposed to only waiting 5-10 minutes to start writing notes? i feel like spending some time reflecting on the whole lecture's information and organizing it thoroughly before writing it down during our break works better for me.
I notice a lot of your examples tend towards concepts like psychology or biology, but how would you implement mind mapping for a topic involving mathematics; say for example statistical mechanics?
@@petergramma1873 Just in a similar way. I mapped out my stats text book and it helped me see a bigger picture. You can group the formulas and important points and types of problems and make a map out of it.
Not sure how this works if reading psychology or philosophy. I’m confused what exactly to organize while reading in small chunks. I think the method works and it makes sense but not sure how to apply for these types of texts. Thank you !
How should one use this method when studying materials with many unfamiliar terms? Should I look up and note down any terms I don't understand immediately?
Are you supposed to start mind mapping during the lecture? After the lecture? After every day? at the end of the week? And same questions for when you add on/edit it
These advice are indeed really helpful and scientific-based but I wonder if there are any guides that is ADHD friendly in creating MIND-map as ADHD-era often struggle to focus, let alone retaining information for a long period of time….
I just want to know how to start this whole process from higher order thinking and then mind mapping and repetition. I am struggling, I never paid attention in school and now I am struggling with my diploma. Is there a way without having to buy the course that I can learn all of this. I don't know in which order I am supposed to watch all these videos and I want to get good at this as learning is really important to me. I really really want to get good at this but I have had snippets and still feel as if I am missing information from all the videos that I do not know of.

He's got a video on learning Chemistry specifically, it's more of a live session/presentation that will maybe be helpful. Can probably find it easy if you search for it. There's also a 1-2 hours livestream of him learning Psychology (don't remember what level) on the ICanStudy channel.
@@Gigusx thanks for this 😭🙏
The reason I write notes consistently as I listen to the teachers is so that I won’t fall asleep during class 😶🌫️😶🌫️😶🌫️
We need you to upload more often
Loved this video. I watched it twice.
Very helpful ❤. Thank you so much. 😊
Yeayyy. New content!!
Those who like before even watching gather here
@@suhareb9252 LOL, the like helps the YT channel, but I use it as a marker that I have listened to/watched the video. I am not obliged to use the like button on only what I truly value.
When watch later exists…
And it was a mistake. Useless video
Watched you for years. This one made it all click for me 🤯
Thank you
Super informative! Thank you, Dr. Sung! Hope you will visit Taiwan someday!
But to have all the good content of the original notes and a teachers wonderful work of assembling it and not loosing any information. Say from excellent RUclips videographers how do we capture all their content as to create a library for those who come after us???
How do you document your study and take in new and contradictory info??!
Perfect video for me! Thank you for your good work! ^^
Thank you so much for the useful information
Keep going 😊
I cabt wait for step 5😢😢😢😢
Mindmap is a thing for ne now, thanks to you. But i still belive there is a missing gap.. working everyday to raise enough money to finally buy your course.
This video dropped at the perfect time
In my opinion word drop type1 is for more remembering stuff
And type 2 is for stuff like organic chemistry that has a lot of connects inbetween them. These connections may confuse you in examination if you are not clear about them
You go from higher order to lower order
You have these groups so that the isolated information fit in more easily and then you interleave your practice containing different levels of learning to check for any gaps and details that are too isolated are chucked into flashcards
Your comment is wrong, you need to watch justin's other videos
Hello Justin please one video on you dissecting some advanced GRINDE maps 🙂🙂
please make a video on HOW TO PRACTICE MIND MAPPING Justin, sorry for caps
I feel some of us do this naturally just cause we're too lazy to take too many notes 😂😂😂 Jokes aside, this is a very insightful and useful video! I've fallen into the learning trap myself a few times and I still have a lot to learn on how to be more efficient
The main reason I have trouble taking notes isn’t because I don’t trust my brain or that I just don’t know how, but that usually the professors are moving onto another topic while I’m trying to process and rewrite the information that I was just given into a way that I a.) understand the concept and b.) will understand what I meant in my notes later on
I default to only taking notes on things that feel important or seem like part of the big idea
Thank you, found this one very helpfull
I think sir is slowly getting back in shape
So I accidentally started doing this with my linear note taking in an effort to get more out of reading/studying starting to understand their might be a slight difference between the two 😅. With delayed note taking, and mind mapping I'll be an awesome ATC in no time.
Hello i am your new subscriber
Love from India ❤
Dr. Justin Sung is the Ubermensch I strive to be one day!
Useful video
Thanks 👍
woah thanks so much !
GREAT STUFF!!
Thanks boss ❤
Thank you very much. I am definitely going to try these methods. How effective are these for someone with ADHD?
i use a speech to text tool called otter whenever I'm watching an educational video or an in person lecture and transfer the text file that's been translated into obsidian/ storage so that i can review it later.
however it does seem like a crutch, when i could just use my brain and summarize it.
Love it!
Sir, could you please make videos on how to study non-theory subject?(maths, physics, etc) Thanks a lot!
Anyways any jspark viewers here🖐🏼🙌🏼
Your’re the best❤
would you say it's okay to wait until the lecture is over as opposed to only waiting 5-10 minutes to start writing notes? i feel like spending some time reflecting on the whole lecture's information and organizing it thoroughly before writing it down during our break works better for me.
I notice a lot of your examples tend towards concepts like psychology or biology, but how would you implement mind mapping for a topic involving mathematics; say for example statistical mechanics?
@@petergramma1873 Just in a similar way. I mapped out my stats text book and it helped me see a bigger picture.
You can group the formulas and important points and types of problems and make a map out of it.
i zoned out multiple times while watching this video
Not sure how this works if reading psychology or philosophy. I’m confused what exactly to organize while reading in small chunks. I think the method works and it makes sense but not sure how to apply for these types of texts. Thank you !
Love mindmapping
always Fun Fun Fun
How should one use this method when studying materials with many unfamiliar terms? Should I look up and note down any terms I don't understand immediately?
@JustinSung what is the app you are using for this video? I really like how you are using it to present your ideas. TY
Are you supposed to start mind mapping during the lecture? After the lecture? After every day? at the end of the week? And same questions for when you add on/edit it
YAYY JUSTINN HE'S BACK
These advice are indeed really helpful and scientific-based but I wonder if there are any guides that is ADHD friendly in creating MIND-map as ADHD-era often struggle to focus, let alone retaining information for a long period of time….
Justin why are you doing this to us..😢
I miss the every consistent Friday's uploads.
I guess you are more busy now.
But damn, much love from Nigeria..
