Wow. This was very helpful. I have always taken notes... like, word for word. Then I would go home from the lecture and immediately rewrite them out- but there was SOME thinking involved here. Because I was trying to shorten how many notes I was writing the second time. It was laborious and time consuming. For that year or so that I was needing the information, this was enough that it was completely "on tap" to remember. To this day, this has been my most successful learning technique and I've not really wanted to move away from it, even though the time cost is actually stupid. I did this for dnd notes, church notes, lecture notes... so tonnes of practice doing it incorrectly lol. BUT, recently I learned about sketch noting (literally just drawing some of your notes) and this has started me being able to do a bit of what you're saying here. Thinking about the information and trying to distill it down to a few icons and a few sentences about what the sermon or session was about. I don't necessarily remember more... BUT I am way more likely to go back through my notes because the drawings (doodles, scribbles, whatever) trigger a lot of information without much effort. There's not a LOT of this thinking distance. At best... probably only 15-30seconds really. That's pretty challenging already... but I'm going to make the leap and try to increase that time! I have a lot of space to practice in my life... staff meetings, dnd games, church... I'm all set! Cheers.

The problem when listening to lectures is that they aren’t recorded. We have to manually record the lecture, that’s why we need to get as much of what the professor is speaking, on paper. Go over the readings, read lecture notes THEN form complex, meaningful ideas, after you’ve had the time to sit down and navigate the information. You can’t do that in lecture because it’s timed, they don’t pause for you, and it’s not recorded. Maybe it is NOW but 15yrs ago? No
You uploaded this at the PERFECT time! I was about to go back and rewatch one of your older mind mapping videos but I’ve been struggling. Thank you so much!

This is why I hated university. There was never any time to process information, it was just fired at you and you better get it all down because after one lecture you are immediately on to the next lecture. Good luck trying to remember an entire day's worth of lectures at 6pm in a noisy library.
This is one of your best videos, not only because of the content but also because this is one of your videos that will help most people. When I first started medical school, I was concerned that I wouldn't have time for anything more than study and I still wouldn't be able to learn everything I needed to be a good doctor and get good grades, that's why It led me to my first objective, relearn how to learn, but effective. This video summarizes why and how to do that. When you understand the benefits of summarizing and organizing, you see why It's so effective, It's like you start condensing a lot of information in specific words or sentences and It stays in your mind, because you effectively learned it. Thank you, Justin, I wish and hope one day I'll have the opportunity to improve even more with your and your team's guidance. Have a nice time you all!
This video is so interesting. I realized I have been doing this exact thing my entire life. I seldom take notes but I recall most of what has been said in a lecture because I trust my brain to capture and absorb everything. When I learn new things I try to think of alternative things that can make it simpler. I hated writing long notes that's why I write very very short notes but more concise.
I felt so defensive watching this. Never knew just how insecure I was about…. How to learn. It’s amazing the things we do in fear of being stupid. Which actually causes us to, learn less. What a vicious cycle. Oof. I do feel a sense of reassurance from this video. Thank you for this information.
Dear Justin, I would like to ask, if you could make a video talking specifically about the pros and cons of the spiral learning model, and spiral processing in education?! Your videos are without a doubt highly appreciated! Thanks you for your time in advance!
your videos have helped me so much even though I'm just in highschool(10th grade), I started watching you at the end of my 9th grade and my score increased massively in few subjects that did not involve practice I molded my mind to love mindmaps and I mainly made them in class and trust me they were bad ,I was basically not reading anything on the mindmap but making connections like the practise I got from it for doing it for 4 months and you videos that answer every single one of my questions massively increased my scores in biology history and geography, I did not make mind maps in in bioo and geo and it fell overwhelming when I mindfully made a mindmap for geo and I just gave up but it is my only subject in which I scored 72/80 and the test was given last week thank you so much you've helped me so much
Thankyou doctor Justin For real since I met you I've had a very good paradigm shift and your free content is so appealing.i don't know how to appreciate you more but God bless you ❤
I find during meetings the only way I can keep track of all the ideas and information is juggling; so much of the information I get during an hour or two hour meetinf is not related or based on incorrect assumptions. It's hard to find and track the ideas that will be fruitful without just writing everything down and googling later
Imo I liked the thumbnail that said "Step One: Trust your brain" better than "You're smarter than you think." The latter still sounds good to hear but I feel like I hear it being said enough to lose its meaning. The former seems to be actually good advice that someone could follow from the thumbnail alone. Plus, as someone who was skeptical but interested in "trusting your brain," it made me want to watch the video to learn more. Of course, that's all from my perspective.
I saw your video just right now and I love for the first sigth, just because I’ve been thinking about programming my brain again and again.First of all my mother tongue is portugueses and I spend the last eleven month studying inglish in order to get fluency just by my own and I love it.❤ I real trust of my brain,I do my part and I rest expecting that he going to do his part too.
I learned how to do these things after I grew up to be a adult, it was after I started learning things I was interested in. I think kids should learn things they are interested in first because they started learning things they hate, just so they can develop the skills to learn.
The information you provide is priceless. Your delivery is also strong, clear, digestible and information is backed up with both information and examples really thank you. However your pace is terrible i felt like somebody is choking me. i am not sure if you wanted to hit some minute mark but this video can easily be summed up to be a 10 minute or less. I am watching in 2x by the way. Thank you for the content that is regardless your pacing the most important one!
The main reason I have trouble taking notes isn’t because I don’t trust my brain or that I just don’t know how, but that usually the professors are moving onto another topic while I’m trying to process and rewrite the information that I was just given into a way that I a.) understand the concept and b.) will understand what I meant in my notes later on I default to only taking notes on things that feel important or seem like part of the big idea
In my opinion word drop type1 is for more remembering stuff And type 2 is for stuff like organic chemistry that has a lot of connects inbetween them. These connections may confuse you in examination if you are not clear about them
You go from higher order to lower order You have these groups so that the isolated information fit in more easily and then you interleave your practice containing different levels of learning to check for any gaps and details that are too isolated are chucked into flashcards Your comment is wrong, you need to watch justin's other videos
. Hello, Justin, It takes one to understand to explain it, thank you! This is your purpose in life, creating a better world, this way, I think. A learning Doctor in how to learn. I will follow your course after I have managed to order a Visa Card. Grateful for this and other videos of your hand. 🙂 🌎
@@suhareb9252 LOL, the like helps the YT channel, but I use it as a marker that I have listened to/watched the video. I am not obliged to use the like button on only what I truly value.
you're top 1 for mindmaps on youtube, I'm doing an accounting course, I wanted a mindmap for my lessons and accounting concepts, the video is really messy. I didn't understand a thing! More simple and complete, we know how to do? abused, a LOT OF BLABLABLA!
I'm about to lose my mind over my Chemistry studies and Justin is just-in time. I watched one of your older videos yesterday on how to read more quickly and effectively with the Sub-Vocalisation, Grouping and Pausing, and I tried it out and I was skimming through entire paragraphs like it was a breeze of air and actually remembering dates and the names of Russian chemists and a bunch of content that would just normally overload my brain and make me thirsty from thinking. I'm also doing psychology studies and they are a lot harder to remember facts with flashcards, because lots of the psychology content, especially social-experiments are interconnected. So I'm hoping this video will help me with turning my currently 84 (☠) need-to-learn flashcards on experiments into mind maps that I can visualise and simplify.
He's got a video on learning Chemistry specifically, it's more of a live session/presentation that will maybe be helpful. Can probably find it easy if you search for it. There's also a 1-2 hours livestream of him learning Psychology (don't remember what level) on the ICanStudy channel.
So I accidentally started doing this with my linear note taking in an effort to get more out of reading/studying starting to understand their might be a slight difference between the two 😅. With delayed note taking, and mind mapping I'll be an awesome ATC in no time.
That makes all the sense. All you do when is writing every word down without processing it is just a tentative of copying what is being said/written. You don't give your brain enough time to connect the words, to find a meaning between them, to think of analogies, etc
Yeah. This way of "documenting" was crucial when there was no other sources of information except a speaker. But... noting paragraphs from textbooks word by word... Cursed stuff
@@avimir8805 Yes, and back then we hadn't even thought about it (this way of taking notes). But even with a speaker only, we can give our brain enough time to process (5:55 'delayed note-taking') by taking less notes 13:45, because as justin said: "learning happens in our brains" 5:45.
I'm terrible at writing notes. I'll listen without hearing. Then information i may regurgitate comes out from somewhere. I have no idea how it got there and it's usually un-organized , it doesn't make sense. I don't know what my brain is doing or how i learn . I can't keep up with my thoughts! What is that? It's like i have some combination lock on the access to my mind, but but know the combination. I really believe once i find that combo ,i can learn anything to the point i can be dangerous, super smart. Something/somewhere has that key
Actually, it's simple I used to face a similar issue For my case, it turned out that my basics were unmet which caused this Sleep(My sleep used to shift significantly everyday and I did not have the sun shine come through which HEAVILY impacted my memory and focus) Meditation(Taught me how to control my brain's focus) YT/Social media Binging(I used to always get sucked into youtube and noticed that the algorithm really messes up my brain so I block ALL of them now and instead search what I want to see) Exercise(Exercising has been shown in various studies to increase neurogenesis, your ability to learn new things and learn from your mistakes) Diet(I basically fast everyday and this helps me maintain focus since the food I eat has a low GI(glycemic index), this also impacts focus, see cajun koi's video on this) It's really these, invest into them heavily and you'll be amazed at how good you'll become
i use a speech to text tool called otter whenever I'm watching an educational video or an in person lecture and transfer the text file that's been translated into obsidian/ storage so that i can review it later. however it does seem like a crutch, when i could just use my brain and summarize it.
i have like the weirdest problem with mindmapping that seemingly no one seems to address; HOW DO YOU DO THIS IN A NOTEBOOK? like if you have an infinite canvas on a tablet or a huge board, sure. but what about like an a5 notebook? there's so little space to work in, you'll end up having to go to the next page in like a few seconds, where do you start with? how do you know if it'll all fit here? am i leaving enough space for the rest of it? THE SPACE MANAGEMENT IS WHAT KILLS ME HOW DO YOU DO THAT
If space is limited make more space. Try using post it notes and work with those until you build your model (or as your building your model). Consolidate your learnings on a separate sheet of paper.
You simply don't use papers(justin doesn't recommend them) Instead you get either a pen tablet(cheaper) or a tablet(a bit more expensive). If you don't know the difference then look it up Personally I first started with a pen tablet(wacom ctl 672) which was really cheap at the second hand market Later on, I upgraded to the Xiaomi Pad 6 tablet which had an absolute killer price for its feature set TL;DR: Justin doesn't recommend using paper as it's a large bottleneck to achieving your full learning potential
2:00 the reason i keep typing or write is because the teacher is too quick or i write too much after a topic and there is a break(there are times when there was no break in between,so i try to write as much as possible ) 2:22 when i try to think about the topic,i am behind in notes in class that is why i just write
I'm here because I'm not a studios person and now I realize that I should learn how to learn effectively. I'm still struggling to learn something because of distractions
How should one use this method when studying materials with many unfamiliar terms? Should I look up and note down any terms I don't understand immediately?
But to have all the good content of the original notes and a teachers wonderful work of assembling it and not loosing any information. Say from excellent RUclips videographers how do we capture all their content as to create a library for those who come after us??? How do you document your study and take in new and contradictory info??!
Hello I'm high school student it's my senior year and I have to lots of things and I still have 148 days left for last general ministry exam I have 7 subjects each subject contain 9 chapters from first letter to last letter is included for my exam and this exam will decide which college I can register so it's hard and full of risks and I still don't know how to do well so wish me luck please and thanks Dr yr helping a lot♥️
I feel some of us do this naturally just cause we're too lazy to take too many notes 😂😂😂 Jokes aside, this is a very insightful and useful video! I've fallen into the learning trap myself a few times and I still have a lot to learn on how to be more efficient
What app do you use for your mindmapping? All the ones I've found so far don't let you draw/write, they force you to type and use pre-defined connections and nodes. Edit: Alternatively, they don't offer an infinite canvas or don't let you save your mind maps.
would you say it's okay to wait until the lecture is over as opposed to only waiting 5-10 minutes to start writing notes? i feel like spending some time reflecting on the whole lecture's information and organizing it thoroughly before writing it down during our break works better for me.
2:13 I listen to your other vide I I am that person who is taking lectures and write everything .I try that thing to let our brain to do that stuff for you 4:30 I am not disciplined at all I give up in between I read that chapter then other subject video then other new chapter and quiet i feel sleepy procrastinated all the time while reading taking class online offline I am not there i am in another zone ( i don't know zone ) I want the answer of this question how to sit for study how to manage subject and syllabus pressure how to stop myself from jumping from one to another and result don't even complete a single chapter of any subject effectively i just read them and while reading I am not there .I try to questioning as you said while taking class but don't complete that class and don't have courage to write or revise what I read or learn from it i don't even see a full video of lecture quiet it because I feel like I don't remember anything . I really trust you you can solve my pblm 😢 .
10:45 Hmmm very interesting analogy. And I can put more clothes in my wardrobe (brain) if I fold them, instead of packing everything together I just cleaned and put it all at once.... It won't fit and I would need to take it out and start all over again. Even if something does fit, I wouldn't know where to find what I wantt. I must have a place only for socks and other only for jackets.... the informations must have sense and your organize it just like your wardrobe. Maybe you think it makes sense to put jackets and jeans closer to each other because they have the same color, or whatever. You find connections the same way.
I notice a lot of your examples tend towards concepts like psychology or biology, but how would you implement mind mapping for a topic involving mathematics; say for example statistical mechanics?
@@petergramma1873 Just in a similar way. I mapped out my stats text book and it helped me see a bigger picture. You can group the formulas and important points and types of problems and make a map out of it.
These advice are indeed really helpful and scientific-based but I wonder if there are any guides that is ADHD friendly in creating MIND-map as ADHD-era often struggle to focus, let alone retaining information for a long period of time….

It’s crazy how every feeling you described is exactly how I feel. I feel anxious all the time and that that I’m just falling more and more behind.
I hv been doing the exact same mistake for a very long time. Thank you so so much Justin for teaching us about this great method. I loved it.❤❤
Recently thinking when will you upload again. This is what I get, leaving us with another excellent video. Thank you!!
Your content is life changing
I felt so defensive watching this. Never knew just how insecure I was about…. How to learn. It’s amazing the things we do in fear of being stupid. Which actually causes us to, learn less. What a vicious cycle.
Oof.
I do feel a sense of reassurance from this video. Thank you for this information.
Dear Justin, I would like to ask, if you could make a video talking specifically about the pros and cons of the spiral learning model, and spiral processing in education?! Your videos are without a doubt highly appreciated! Thanks you for your time in advance!
your videos have helped me so much even though I'm just in highschool(10th grade), I started watching you at the end of my 9th grade and my score increased massively in few subjects that did not involve practice
I molded my mind to love mindmaps and I mainly made them in class and trust me they were bad ,I was basically not reading anything on the mindmap but making connections like the practise I got from it for doing it for 4 months and you videos that answer every single one of my questions massively increased my scores in biology history and geography, I did not make mind maps in in bioo and geo and it fell overwhelming when I mindfully made a mindmap for geo and I just gave up but it is my only subject in which I scored 72/80 and the test was given last week
thank you so much you've helped me so much
This is extremely useful for me. I haven't been thinking much about the way I'm learning. It's time to change it. Many thanks for the video!
Thank you so much! I will now try this and try to master it.
These are the types of video we need
Already know this is Life Changing. Thank you
Thankyou doctor Justin
For real since I met you I've had a very good paradigm shift and your free content is so appealing.i don't know how to appreciate you more but God bless you ❤
I find during meetings the only way I can keep track of all the ideas and information is juggling; so much of the information I get during an hour or two hour meetinf is not related or based on incorrect assumptions. It's hard to find and track the ideas that will be fruitful without just writing everything down and googling later
I recently read a book on mindmapping this video popped up in my feed so I can put it into practice. Thank you for getting started
Imo I liked the thumbnail that said "Step One: Trust your brain" better than "You're smarter than you think."
The latter still sounds good to hear but I feel like I hear it being said enough to lose its meaning. The former seems to be actually good advice that someone could follow from the thumbnail alone. Plus, as someone who was skeptical but interested in "trusting your brain," it made me want to watch the video to learn more. Of course, that's all from my perspective.
Very helpful for learning! Thank you!
This is amazing that I get to access this knowledge almost for free... Thanks Justin for bringing out this extremely useful content.
I just got a eureka moment at 10:50 . This is great
Thank you teacher
I saw your video just right now and I love for the first sigth, just because I’ve been thinking about programming my brain again and again.First of all my mother tongue is portugueses and I spend the last eleven month studying inglish in order to get fluency just by my own and I love it.❤
I real trust of my brain,I do my part and I rest expecting that he going to do his part too.
Thank you so much for this video! God bless you ❤
I learned how to do these things after I grew up to be a adult, it was after I started learning things I was interested in. I think kids should learn things they are interested in first because they started learning things they hate, just so they can develop the skills to learn.
just completed a MM and you dropped this to help me even more, thankyou!
Thank you so much. You are just right.
THANK YOU SO MUCH BROTHER,U ARE REALLY A LIFE CHANGER FOR ME,MAY ALMIGHTY ALLAH (S.W.T) BLESS YOUR KNOWLEDGE
The main reason I have trouble taking notes isn’t because I don’t trust my brain or that I just don’t know how, but that usually the professors are moving onto another topic while I’m trying to process and rewrite the information that I was just given into a way that I a.) understand the concept and b.) will understand what I meant in my notes later on
I default to only taking notes on things that feel important or seem like part of the big idea
Very usefull information. Thank you.
I just found this channel and here to stay!
In my opinion word drop type1 is for more remembering stuff
And type 2 is for stuff like organic chemistry that has a lot of connects inbetween them. These connections may confuse you in examination if you are not clear about them
You go from higher order to lower order
You have these groups so that the isolated information fit in more easily and then you interleave your practice containing different levels of learning to check for any gaps and details that are too isolated are chucked into flashcards
Your comment is wrong, you need to watch justin's other videos
I love you man. Thank you for sharing all these tips with us
.
Hello, Justin,
It takes one to understand to explain it, thank you!
This is your purpose in life, creating a better world, this way, I think.
A learning Doctor in how to learn.
I will follow your course after I have managed to order a Visa Card.
Grateful for this and other videos of your hand.
🙂

@@suhareb9252 LOL, the like helps the YT channel, but I use it as a marker that I have listened to/watched the video. I am not obliged to use the like button on only what I truly value.
When watch later exists…
And it was a mistake. Useless video
Dropping a comment to retrain my algorithm :)
Justing is such a blessing
you're top 1 for mindmaps on youtube, I'm doing an accounting course, I wanted a mindmap for my lessons and accounting concepts, the video is really messy. I didn't understand a thing! More simple and complete, we know how to do? abused, a LOT OF BLABLABLA!
Just on time, exactly when u needed it
I'm about to lose my mind over my Chemistry studies and Justin is just-in time. So I'm hoping this video will help me with turning my currently 84 (☠) need-to-learn flashcards on experiments into mind maps that I can visualise and simplify.
pls i watched it too yesterday aahahs its so much easier and quicker
He's got a video on learning Chemistry specifically, it's more of a live session/presentation that will maybe be helpful. Can probably find it easy if you search for it. There's also a 1-2 hours livestream of him learning Psychology (don't remember what level) on the ICanStudy channel.
@@Gigusx thanks for this 😭🙏
Audio recording + review with GPT to make a mind map based on Justin Sung’s step by step program!
Don't reveal our secret!
Yeayyy. New content!!
So I accidentally started doing this with my linear note taking in an effort to get more out of reading/studying starting to understand their might be a slight difference between the two 😅. With delayed note taking, and mind mapping I'll be an awesome ATC in no time.
Can you make a video on how to practice Retrieving when using mind maps
Great video, been doing some of these subconsciously.
The reason I write notes consistently as I listen to the teachers is so that I won’t fall asleep during class 😶🌫️😶🌫️😶🌫️
Very informative.
Ahh god complex
Actually, it's simple
I used to face a similar issue
For my case, it turned out that my basics were unmet which caused this
Sleep(My sleep used to shift significantly everyday and I did not have the sun shine come through which HEAVILY impacted my memory and focus)
Meditation(Taught me how to control my brain's focus)
YT/Social media Binging(I used to always get sucked into youtube and noticed that the algorithm really messes up my brain so I block ALL of them now and instead search what I want to see)
Exercise(Exercising has been shown in various studies to increase neurogenesis, your ability to learn new things and learn from your mistakes)
Diet(I basically fast everyday and this helps me maintain focus since the food I eat has a low GI(glycemic index), this also impacts focus, see cajun koi's video on this)
It's really these, invest into them heavily and you'll be amazed at how good you'll become
i use a speech to text tool called otter whenever I'm watching an educational video or an in person lecture and transfer the text file that's been translated into obsidian/ storage so that i can review it later.
however it does seem like a crutch, when i could just use my brain and summarize it.
Wow 9:30 learnt something new, will definitely going to try this out. Thanks 👍
Thank you Dr. Sung. I'm almost there thanks to you.
i have like the weirdest problem with mindmapping that seemingly no one seems to address; HOW DO YOU DO THIS IN A NOTEBOOK?
like if you have an infinite canvas on a tablet or a huge board, sure. but what about like an a5 notebook? there's so little space to work in, you'll end up having to go to the next page in like a few seconds, where do you start with? how do you know if it'll all fit here? am i leaving enough space for the rest of it?
THE SPACE MANAGEMENT IS WHAT KILLS ME HOW DO YOU DO THAT
If space is limited make more space. Try using post it notes and work with those until you build your model (or as your building your model). Consolidate your learnings on a separate sheet of paper.
You simply don't use papers(justin doesn't recommend them)
Instead you get either a pen tablet(cheaper) or a tablet(a bit more expensive). If you don't know the difference then look it up
Personally I first started with a pen tablet(wacom ctl 672) which was really cheap at the second hand market
Later on, I upgraded to the Xiaomi Pad 6 tablet which had an absolute killer price for its feature set
TL;DR: Justin doesn't recommend using paper as it's a large bottleneck to achieving your full learning potential
2:00 the reason i keep typing or write is because the teacher is too quick or i write too much after a topic and there is a break(there are times when there was no break in between,so i try to write as much as possible )
2:22 when i try to think about the topic,i am behind in notes in class that is why i just write
Loved this video. I watched it twice.
Perfect video for me! Thank you for your good work! ^^
Please please please make a video in problems with the education system and your approach to how it should be
I'm here because I'm not a studios person and now I realize that I should learn how to learn effectively. I'm still struggling to learn something because of distractions
Justin: You need to start an AA meeting for people who take notes during the lecture - I can show up early and brew coffee for everyone
Very helpful ❤. Thank you so much. 😊
love you Justin❤
How should one use this method when studying materials with many unfamiliar terms? Should I look up and note down any terms I don't understand immediately?
Thank you so much for the useful information
Keep going 😊
Thank you, found this one very helpfull
Hello i am your new subscriber
Love from India ❤
Thank you
We need you to upload more often
I feel some of us do this naturally just cause we're too lazy to take too many notes 😂😂😂 Jokes aside, this is a very insightful and useful video! I've fallen into the learning trap myself a few times and I still have a lot to learn on how to be more efficient
What app do you use for your mindmapping? All the ones I've found so far don't let you draw/write, they force you to type and use pre-defined connections and nodes.
Edit: Alternatively, they don't offer an infinite canvas or don't let you save your mind maps.
@@FelixEvers06 try the [concepts] app.
This video dropped at the perfect time
Watched you for years. This one made it all click for me 🤯
Useful video
Thanks 👍
would you say it's okay to wait until the lecture is over as opposed to only waiting 5-10 minutes to start writing notes? i feel like spending some time reflecting on the whole lecture's information and organizing it thoroughly before writing it down during our break works better for me.
11:30 I love those graphs.
I think sir is slowly getting back in shape
Great video. What software do you use for your videos?
I notice a lot of your examples tend towards concepts like psychology or biology, but how would you implement mind mapping for a topic involving mathematics; say for example statistical mechanics?
@@petergramma1873 Just in a similar way. I mapped out my stats text book and it helped me see a bigger picture.
You can group the formulas and important points and types of problems and make a map out of it.
Justin why are you doing this to us..😢
I miss the every consistent Friday's uploads.
I guess you are more busy now.
But damn, much love from Nigeria..
These advice are indeed really helpful and scientific-based but I wonder if there are any guides that is ADHD friendly in creating MIND-map as ADHD-era often struggle to focus, let alone retaining information for a long period of time….
woah thanks so much !
