I feel like the visual process mapping method lacks the strategic component of studying. We answer the question of what study process we are doing in a study session and why, but we don’t answer the question of what we are studying that we are applying that study process to. We aren’t diagnosing the task (say of doing good in an exam) to identify the critical points that maximise output per unit effort put into them. These critical points aren’t necessarily specific areas of the syllabus but could be radically different approaches to performance and how you view preparation. I am sorry if this sounds confusing but the point of I am trying to make is that method of studying and strategy making are two different skills that are required for excelling academically and the VPM method does not acknowledge the latter.
@JustinSung Could you please make a video that explores about common type of relations between knowledge that often leads to better way to group for both procedure knowledge and conceptual knowledge?
I am a therapist. That is what I do as well for my sessions. I help my clients to map out the coping strategies that they use before the stressful event, during the stressful event, and after the stressful event. This helps to bring clarity. It allows my ciients to see how well the strategies work or not work.
bro raised my grades by 50% from 30% avarage results (mans was legit failing) to 70% broooo I abused the hell out of those mindmaps after watching his mindmap videos like crazy
I got chills when I realized how making a basic skeleton and scaffolding before the study session would make everything sooooooooo much easier and streamlined. I'm self studying for something like SATs on my country, and often it feels like I'm just stumbling my way forward, which was fine cause it's so much material that I just had to *start* somewhere. I'm definitely going to fill that VPM template! Actually, right now.
Most ways of thinking that resist your desire for positive growth are coping mechanisms, learned baggage designed to support other ingrained processes. Allowing these cognitive defenses to uphold your own negative mindsets is what leads to self-sabotage! Decide once and for all that isn't you or who you want to be and face the temporary pain of growth.
I went through a lot academically: With 32 y.o. I started my bachelor (as an undergraduated), I got my AuDHD diagnosis this year. Very eager to adapt and change. I have a small request: while the past few videos have focused on improving study techniques, I-and many of my peers-don’t actually use techniques at all. since we just started prepare for national level competitive exams and in the past we gave only school exam so there was not much to think about learning since it was so easy. Could you create a beginner video that’s tailored for complete newcomers? Thanks!
i feel that too , specially with more logical subjects like physics I am not sure how to make notes because I can't really visualise a concept or a way to think to make mind maps of or to repeatedly use flashcards for . so maybe someone can help us with explain these techniques for more logic based or mathematical subjects
@@tulikagupta5738 I feel like Justin doesn't really do a great job here. He doesn't go in great detail on what good' studying actually look like. I too wonder about this - effectiveness of mind mapping for math. Mind mapping is about building a mental map of your subject, an understanding of how things are related. For math it seems it is about distilling the global ideas of problem solving besides the conceptual understanding of the domain.

I like your video. The idea is close to emotional baggage that people carry... I am studying the bar course in the UK and looking at using/adopting scientific methods to help me absorb knowledge and grow further.
Hi, Can you upload a video especially for medical student and how they should orient their mind and academic goals with smart usage of available resources in a scientific way...
I've had a sour aftertaste because of how the video started. Oh, a problem that can't be seen and the only person that could help me is the one telling about the problem? I've endured the ever-present 'pain-solution' pair, and was pleased to hear two very valuable points that I feel the need to write down. An idea that a person is a sum of their choices is rather common. It is reinforced here and applied in a sense that the outcomes of learning will stay the same, as long as the strategies one picks up along their academic career don't change. In practise, when faced with a familiar kind of challenge, a person is likely to utilize familiar tools, however suitable they may be, in favor of searching for new tools. Which ties in nicely with another idea that observation precedes understanding precedes control. It's established that, before changing your habits, you must study them. Visual Process Mapping is the suggested framework to use here. Value of conscious attention and conscious practise is crossdisciplinarity, really. Nice to see it here.
Hey Justin, Ik most of your videos are about conceptual learning but I was wondering if you could do an example of how to go about a college level math / HR / or business class. I’ve been doing my best to mind map but I am unsure of how useful they can be on a subject like those. I have found the mind maps / way of thinking to be unbelievably useful in my classes like neuroscience and psychology so Ik you can help with the other ones as well.😊
If you wanna do math from a conceptual level it's quite unintuitive but it works once you really get it. You have to understand the problem your solving in words first and then derive the approach to solving it then relate the formulas. You also have to approach problems from the point of view of 'forms' understanding what form of equation you are in and what substitutions you can rewrite it as and relate that to the problem
when it comes to math, I always, drop the numbers. try to explain the concept of the theorem, proof etc that you are trying to learn. Sometimes we tendo to rely A LOT on the proofs already done ( since they WORK) without understanding what is happening deeply. Math is one of those subjects that is very easy to tTHINK you know
Could you please make a video that explores about common type of relations between knowledge that often leads to better way to group for both procedure knowledge and conceptual knowledge? Preferably with lots of example too.
there's a book called Hidden Manifestation by Oliver Mercer, and it talks about how using some secret techniques you can attract almost everything in life it's not some bullshit law of attraction, it's the real deal
So I'm just gonna write a comment about what I do, I read, I write, I think (make connections and encode), sometimes I rarely test myself, and I get good grades. Also for math I just do the problems until I get them or see a solution and try a bunch of ways of solving them and the related concepts come to me after seeing the solutions a few times. I don't take notes, I don't do active recall unless it's testing myself but that isn't a habit. I do practice recalling a lot while reading or doing the problems but this should be obvious. I did the test and most of it applies to people that do a bunch of stuff so when asking about notes, which I don't take, I have to answer something even though it just doesn't seem to directly apply to me. My recall is good and my encoding is good enough to get good grades but I lose the info after about a month if I'm not thinking about it actively and to start thinking about it I have to read something about it, even something slightly related works or a conversation in a related topic will do. Basically my recall, interleaving, and over learning is plenty good I think my encoding could be better and faster and that would solve things. If learning how to take notes would help I would do it I just haven't found the right method for them yet. In short I don't care about school I am doing plenty good there I just want to be able to hold lots of info encoded well (make it stick better) and recall it easier than necessary for school. Edit: Forgot to mention there is one thing I am trying right now which is trying to actively remember names and what they studied especially and which papers I have read. Why are the resources necessary to extract value from a "main learning event/lecture" put under the why column of the visual process mapping sheet? This seems like putting "to consume gasoline" as a reason for driving your car, when the "why" for that is actually "to get to work." If the answers to the questions arent sensible, how good can such an exercise ultimately be? This seems like an opportunity to embed some instruction on how to maximize lecture time, and I have no better reasons to list than "to uncover knowledge gaps" or "to ask questions," and neither of them were put in any "why" column at all, so are they not really answers to "why" attend a lecture?
Know thy enemy and know thyself; in a hundred battles, you will never be defeated or I will not say I failed 1,000 times, I will say that I found 1,000 ways that won't work” and why mapping out, written format is important : your brain cannot hold all the 101 systems or techniques or types. Thus graphical or written notes on what one did and how it fair is first step. copying is important, but copying and knowing how the process worked for the experts in their fields or via immediate feedback allows better learning retention , hence why GPT has brought forth a new gen of limitless learning possibilities. why Peer reviewed papers are important and how online forums or community say , Computers, tech , network, cars, moded cars etc caused an explosion of new methods , apart from some false information where some take it to seal their " secret " and earn. and if you dont know where or how to define your own starting point, you will be spinning your wheels, and expecting a different outcome just from sheer luck.
Hey Justin , really nice video ! I was wondering if I could help you with more Quality Editing in your videos and also make a highly engaging Thumbnail and also help you with the overall youtube strategy and growth ! Pls let me know what you think ?
@@RufMichAn88 this video is basically a deep dive into your own brain. Try recalling HOW you study a topic or chapter, or lecture, etc, note it down and try to find the reasons why you do it, and how certain are you that it works. Chances are a lot of the study techniques you use are not amounting to anything, and by meditating on your study technique for a period of time, you may study more efficiently
I hope that someone in these comments can help me bc I have one comprehension issue but it's an older video of his: at 1:20 ( ruclips.net/video/3uDROfnx2TE/видео.htmlsi=4ukuHkBhb1_KEvEThe ) he says that we're supposed to use pre-study in order to go through all lectures of said week and turn that into a sort of mind map to build upon but before that he says to separate notes per topic. My question is, since most lectures in a week would be on entirely different topics, would we do one (during pre-study) per topic or one for all of them combined? Thanks in advance! (I'm starting my Psychology studies next week)

This seems like an opportunity to embed some instruction on how to maximize lecture time, and I have no better reasons to list than "to uncover knowledge gaps" or "to ask questions," and neither of them were put in any "why" column at all, so are they not really answers to "why" attend a lecture?
I want to see more examples pleaaaseeee
you, at the time of this comment, have one thousand subscribers for every video that's public on your channel
pretty darn cool
This is great cause I need to write a test tomorrow😂
Know thy enemy and know thyself; in a hundred battles, you will never be defeated
or
I will not say I failed 1,000 times, I will say that I found 1,000 ways that won't work”
and why mapping out, written format is important : your brain cannot hold all the 101 systems or techniques or types. Thus graphical or written notes on what one did and how it fair is first step.
copying is important, but copying and knowing how the process worked for the experts in their fields or via immediate feedback allows better learning retention ,
hence why GPT has brought forth a new gen of limitless learning possibilities.
why Peer reviewed papers are important and how online forums or community say , Computers, tech , network, cars, moded cars etc caused an explosion of new methods , apart from some false information where some take it to seal their " secret " and earn.
and if you dont know where or how to define your own starting point, you will be spinning your wheels, and expecting a different outcome just from sheer luck.

Reflection is useful - ok... am I missing something? That seems to be quite obvious and shallow.

I got a whole 3% overall score
Very correct, many people who dropped out of high school would have no idea of what is right or wrong. Unless of course they planned it.
thank u
What’s the notes app that he uses?
Mind maps are known as mandalas in Buddhism. Unlearning is again an Eastern concept.
thanks!
1. Want a tab like JustinSung explain on
Am I the only one who didn’t get what this video was about? 🤷🏼♂️
@@RufMichAn88 yes
@@RufMichAn88 this video is basically a deep dive into your own brain. Try recalling HOW you study a topic or chapter, or lecture, etc, note it down and try to find the reasons why you do it, and how certain are you that it works. Chances are a lot of the study techniques you use are not amounting to anything, and by meditating on your study technique for a period of time, you may study more efficiently
Wow what avatar is creepy af! 😱
make mind maps, use flashcards and do practice tests. got it. thanks.
Man you're amazing, you're literally my Jesus, or I guess Justin lol
I scored 3% 😭
@@galenerso1594 I got 0%😭😭😭
It is only one way:
If you don't see how what you study will help you in the long run you will not make it through.
Soo exited to watch vid
I am a person who cram before exam how can i use that?
All of this is just the socratic method of questioning or street epistemology repackaged as "visual process mapping".
I did the quiz 2 times
First I got Karp learner
Second I got Spark learner
I think I'm in the middle of these 2
First...how are you Justin
how to download this template can anybody please help?
