    Ok let's do some math. Let's say you are commuting right now in a truck that gets 20 MPG. Your round trip commute is 40 miles/day, 5 days/week. That is 200 miles per week, about 800 miles per month (that keeps you under the 10k per year too). At 20 MPG that is 40 gallons of gas. At $3.30 per gallon that is $132 per month. Let's assume that the leaf will get about 4 miles/kWh so that is 200 kWh. At $0.12 per kWh that is $24 per month. So $132 - $24 -$40 (total lease cost per month) you are getting paid $68 per month to drive a new car and not put all those miles on your truck. Maybe that savings evaporates with insurance, but then saving on the maintenance of the truck will balance that out too. This is an absolute no-brainer for someone in that situation.

    Hardly surprising, Nissan had a golden chance to set themselves up then totally ignored the development of the car for most of its life. The charging tech is 10 years out of date! The Leaf is a great EV, but only if you can charge at home/work for 90% of your driving needs

      Not to mention the battery has no real cooling system so if you even think about fast charging the battery so gonna be running hot. My part of California is super hot in the summer and the battery was almost always near the red zone temperature wise even when I didn't think of fast charging.

      Sounds like the typical Japanese auto maker story... Toyota and Honda had an early start too, but local politics killed the EV dream in favor of hybrids and hydrogen. Now they're getting left in the dust by China and Europe as they continue to begrudgingly push out mediocre BEV efforts. The US automakers are about to be in the same boat by blocking competition and creating an island of inefficient mediocrity. It'll soon be like the 80s malaise era all over again where nobody will want big inefficient American iron and the industry will suffer.

    I tried a Nissan leaf 2020 for about a week and I loved the car but I didn't go through with the purchase because it's so stupid that it uses a outdated fast charging port (Chademo) and the there is no real battery cooling system. I live in a hot summer part of California and the battery was almost always near the first red marker and if I even thought about fast charging it the battery would immediately go to the red zone and the charge rate would drop to 20 kwh or even lower . For the price the regular leaf goes at you might as well look for a Chevy bolt that'll be cheaper and you'll get much more range. The base model leaf should have at least 200 miles of range imo.

  • @Derek_Read

    Tempting. Nicer than my 2016 Leaf -- butt ugly but still very functional. Imported to BC used from California in 2019. Still gets about 95 miles (85 in winter in Vancouver). 99% of my charging is done at home with the Leaf's 110v portable charger connected to a heavy extension cord. The northwest and the lower 1/2 of BC still has tons of Chademo available. We take it from Vancouver to Whistler for skiing each year, with a 30 minute charging stop in Squamish on the way there. Two 30 minute charging breaks get us to Seattle. We got it with 20,000km on it and now we're at 55,000km. With the right weather I figure the Leaf is a great car despite not having modern battery management. My brother-in-law has the identical car imported at the same time with similar experience.

    UPDATE: They are out of base model Leafs. They still have some Leaf SVs (50% more range, more power, more expensive).
    I was able to get a base Leaf. Thanks, Kyle!
    I cancelled my 17-week-late Tesla Model S Plaid order and needed a car, and this one popped up in my RUclips feed at just the right time. I admit it is a bit anticlimactic going from expecting a Plaid to getting a Leaf, but just the 5% *interest* on the RobinHood account I was using to pay for the Plaid will pay for FIVE Nissan Leaf leases over the course of the two year lease agreement. I know basic arithmetic, so I can't turn away a deal like that.
    Fort Collins Nissan and Pat Rivera were a pleasure to work with. It took maybe 20 minutes to go through the entire process, though I did fill out some forms online ahead of time. Thanks Pat!

    The battery degradation on these leads is huge. Mine was close to 10% in 2 years. They are truly disposable cars. Mine ate through a full set of tires in 13,000 miles. So budget for that in your lease calculation. But if you are only keeping it for 2 years, the degradation is the second owner’s problem.

    • @wzDH106

      10% doesn't sound too far off from industry standard. We know 1st Gen leafs exceeded that number by a larger margin, especially in warm climates. I recently calculated a 8.5% deg on our Mini Cooper with a liquid cooled battery, almost 40k miles and 3 years. A new generation leaf, without such cooling system, sounds vastly improved over the 1st generation.

    The dealer isn’t giving them away, the state of Colorado and the US tax payers are paying for your car unfortunately. The dealer is still selling the car for normal price less the incentives

  • @Smidge204
    @Smidge204 2 месяца назад +2

    Checking the dealer's site (not in the market at all just curious). 2024 models are $30K and 2025 models are $21K. (huh?)
    $500 done and $20/mo for 24mo = $980. Colorado residents can get $7500 total state incentives and there's another $7500 in federal incentives. So the residual is about $5K for the 2025 model, plus whatever the financing fees work out to be because presumably you're paying *something* on that end. Still though even if ALL the lease payments are interest that's only an extra $480.
    What the actual heck, they're worth more as parts...

    This deal is crazy! My parents would definitely get one as just an extra car if we could get the deal in NY. My parents want to ditch their Rouge and go electric since both my sister and I drive EVs.

    I wish I or literally anyone I knew could make use of such a low mileage lease. 40kWh Leaf would be an excellent commuter car if there wasn't such a low mileage limit on the lease.
    This is very similar to the first EV I got, a 2017 Soul EV that was nearly free with the lease deal they were doing at the time. It was cheaper to drive that car vs the fully paid off Civic that I was driving at the time (due to the price of gas and repairs/maintenance)

    I thought the days of the super cheap evs were over. Drove new Kias and leafs for $99 a month from 2016 to 2022. Actually got a $5000 payout turning one of my Kias in and got an $8000 payout turning my Leaf in during the chaos of 2022. *I don't mean a direct turn-in. I mean a buyout at the lease end and selling to KBB or Carmax at the end.

    @OutofSpecReviews Theae are serious questions:
    How does this to your lease / clear out the inventory plan benefit Nissan in the long run?
    In two years time those cars are going to come back to Nissan. Do they scavenge the battery and other useful items?
    Are the owners allowed to buy the car outright at the end of the lease?

      Doesn't it just mean there will be a glut on the market 2 years from now?
      Whether or not Nissan allows the lessees to buy the car at the end of the term or they take it back like Tesla does with their leases.

      Thats how I got mine back in 2017, georgia had a crazy lease 2 year lease deal then there was a flood of them on the market, I paid $9k for my 2015 with 20k miles.

    • @pauld6967
      @pauld6967 2 месяца назад

      @@mattblackwood7131 Well, maybe there will be bargains but I would prefer to pick one up before the end of this year or early next year.
      For me, the lease concept just doesn't make sense, since the business will have a slew of vehicles to dump onto the market, unless they set up a process to harvest the battery components out of them upon return. Then I can see a benefit to the manufacturer.
      Time will tell.

I regulary use nissan leafs on Zipcar ( pay per hour rental in london ) , they are great for the city, easy to drive and seem to handle the abuse of zipcar really well . Only thing i dont like is the auto emergency braking , that has to be turned off especially in the city with lots of pedestrians and cyclist , its always slamming on the brakes .

    Wow, and I thought ending up at $16.5k for my 2015 Leaf SV at the end of the 2 year lease was a deal! Here in Georgia they ended the state tax credit of $5k in 2015 or 2016. I bought mine out for cheap and my son is driving about to turn 100k miles. Unfortunately the battery state of health has gone from 12 bars to 10 bars but it is still an excellent "grocery getter". I wonder what this deal would end up being, leasing and transporting the car to Georgia! May have to call Pat!
