  • Mark Brandon Chopper Read was one of Australias most notorious, and infamous Criminals.
    In 1992 he was convicicted of shooting his former friend Sydney Collins.
    10 years later Sydney Collins disappeared, and has never been seen since.
    Chopper claimed to be involved in the disappearance.
    Was Chopper Read involved? Or was it another of Choppers tales?

    As an Aussie we grew up seeing chopper in the media just like any other celebrity or politician ...my dad thought he was a goose but I was always fascinated to hear about him. To me he was my generations jack Dugan, the wild colonial boy or Ned Kelly. I read his books and by the time the Chopper movie came out i was in high school , and to this day it’s still one of my all time favourite films . Eric Banners performance of him is spot on. Good video mate 👍🏼🇦🇺

    I met Chopper at a Melbourne pub in 2001. I think it's called the Retreat, in Nicholson St, Abbottsford. It was one of those cringeworthy situations where the friend I was with was the son of a guy who had some kind of friendship with Chopper. I felt the introduction was humiliating, but we were invited to sit down for a drink. He was drinking tomato juice, I think. Possibly a Bloody Mary, but given his liver issues... I spoke almost exclusively to his partner, who seemed very nice, and this was far less vomit inducing than what my hero-worshipping friend was doing with her man. The guy just wanted to be left alone...

    I met Chopper while he was doing his tours. The publican bought a bike from my shop and noticed I had a Chopper DVD and book on my counter and asked if I was a fan. Yeah, I like the video. So he took my number and said I’ll give you a call soon. Ok. 2 weeks later I get a call, it’s the publican. He takes me out to a private beer garden and Chopper, Roger Rogerson and Mark Jacko Jackson were sat at a table.
    Chopper looked just like a normal old bloke. Jacko was a bloody brick wall. An absolute beast. Roger was just an old man.
    We sit down, shake hands, introduce each other and I realised that out of the people at the table, half of them had killed multiple people.
    So we just had general chit chat, drank our beers, laughed, talked some more shit, and after another beer they had to get ready for their show and I had to go back to work and close up and get ready for the show.

      @@mattlegg1976 Cheers! Yeah it sure was. It was crazy talking to Rog, he’s the ‘disgraced’ Aus cop who is now in jail for murdering a drug dealer, he was just a good old bloke, and honest to god just spoke like he was your grand dad and seemed really out of place there, despite at the time having killed I think 3 or 4 blokes.
      I cannot emphasise just how big Jacko was. He was an AFL football player and the man was a beast. His torso was basically a fridge. Gigantic. Funny thing is he was in a boxing match for charity with Mal Meninga, a NRL player and Meninga just floored him like a rag doll. But I swear to god you could store a Range Rover motor inside Jackos chest cavity.
      Chopper was really quiet, very subdued, almost uncomfortable at first. I didn’t want to talk to him about the usual shit like his ears, or the usual boring stuff so I mentioned his books, I was a pawnbroker at the time so everyone sort of had a story about pawnbrokers, Chopper made a joke and said I must be the toughest bloke at the table doing that job and I think asked if I was armed and made a few jokes like that, and once he had relaxed a bit he was more talkative, but he didn’t really lead the conversation like I thought he would.
      Now funnily enough, during the show, I suspect he had some performance enhancing materials, I’ll say, because he was talking 100mph, shouting, jumping up and down, super hyped up, really on the go… or goey.

    • @MickAngelhere
      @MickAngelhere 8 месяцев назад +2

      I heard that Jacko saw a couple of blokes beating up someone and he went to help the man by beating up his attackers as for fighting Mal Meninga I can believe he floored him as Mal in his prime was massive I couldn’t believe the size of him when I went to the footy

    • @thesausage351
      @thesausage351 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@MickAngelhere Yeah Jacko would have done that, he was seriously a nice dude, like really genuine, and really polite and nice, and when I remarked how big his chest was he played it down and said my arms would give his a run (not even close) but he was just really friendly and playful like that, kinda playing himself down and complimenting you, if you know what I mean. Meninga must be damn huge then because I’ve managed a gym before with some massive bodybuilders and I swear to god Jacko would be every bit as big as what they were. The man was a beast.

    When I saw the story of Collins going missing in the paper, it was only a little article buried deep in the paper. I saw Mark the next day and asked him "did you do it?". Mark never lied to me once when I asked him about his past. His answer to that was "the Sydney Police came down and asked me the same thing, and I told them I didn't do it". I didn't ask him about it again after that. The Police say he didn't do it, but I don't know. In the 60 Minutes story, they interviewed Jacko, and he said it was BS and that they hadn't even started touring when Collins disappeared. I know that to be wrong, as I moved to NSW in 2002 and saw Chopper, Jacko and Roger do their show at the Bondi Hotel. The girl who emceed their show drove me home that night, and told me she met Mark 3 tours back and had emceed the last two NSW tours., so I know they'd been there previously.

    I believe his last confessions. 4 murders. He had nothing left to embellish, the first was when he was a 19, the second the pedo, the third the Turk, then the coke head biker Syd. He’s had way to many hits on his life, robbed far to many, caused way to many riffles, and how he handled the killing of the Turk. You can tell that death wasn’t something alien to him. Like a war Veteran. It was his way of making peace, that 60 mins interview. One last F U to his enemies. Rip Chopper.

    Chopper kicked around some of the suburbs in the area I grew up in. At least that's what his police record says.
    Have you done a video on Squizzy Taylor? My grandmother, who was born in Richmond, recalled Squizzy frequenting the store she worked in as a teen. He would come in to buy cigarettes, and she said he dressed so nicely and was a complete gentleman. I laugh about that now, I think she had a crush on him, mesmerised by his charm. Grandma passed away some years ago, just shy of 100. I love oral history, it's so invaluable.
    Just the other day, a local in the country town I live in now was telling me about the ultimate shootout between Squizzy Taylor and Snowy Cutmore. He's in his 80s. I think many old Melburnians naturally know this legendary tale, my own father who grew up in Kew told me the same version. And you had to be careful who you might run into on the bluestone back alleys of Melbourne, or it would seem that way.

    I was told by ex cop that chopper did do every crime he claimed off doing and was accused with. The police knew it also. During the 80s and early 90s drug dealers and gang leaders was high in Australia and was to get out of control. The cops couldn't get half the criminals and allowed chopper to get away with majority of his crimes as he was cleaning up what they couldn't get. That's what I was told

    The Russian Roulette scene was Chopper shooting behind his head and then to the side of the 60 mins reporter's head. Got a lot of gasps from midwits. Chopper's greatest moment was calling out popular conservative radio personality Alan Jones for his frequenting Public Toilets for gay sex live on air. An activity he had been arrested for. Chopper also refused accepting an organ donation, he claimed, which he thought would go to better use in someone else. If true, that's impressive humility.

    It's good to see a video that doesn't include the title "hardest man in Britain." There can only be one of them at a time. I think Chopper Read definitely like the notoriety and I'm guessing he would have taken credit for 9/11 if the TV cameras was on. Good video.

      I doubt he would’ve taken credit for 9/11 . He wasn’t a terrorist or a serial killer . He only bumped off drug dealers & little big shots in his own criminal circle . The ones he killed weren’t angels , they were criminals , remember that .

      A few yrs later there was a Royal Commission into police corruption where a few facts could only have come from certain people.
      If l remember rightly Chop was one the first to have earnings from his books stopped by law?

    Thank you Matt for this video. I am from Australia and have known of chopper for many years. He tells a good yarn alright. But a blood and guts man without a doubt just have a look at his many scars. Gets his ears removed to get out of H Division as his life was in imminent danger total insanity but it kept him alive. Made more money writing about crime than committing it and also became an artist and sold a few paintings and If I am not mistaken he also wrote some childrens books. A very talented man young chopper. His mum was a bible basher and his dad well you see him in the movie he aint the full quid a few slices short of a loaf you might say. Grew up around Melbourne somewhere tough areas really tough people so I guess he just became a product of his environment. But obviously emotionally affected by his upbringing. Loved violence apparently. I dont know if Scotland Yard would of allowed him into the country with his record ;-) . Once again thanks Matt. Please stay safe. Regards from Australia.

      @@mattlegg1976 I don't remember too much about what he actually was talking about. I remember one story where when he arrived at a prison (Pentridge I think) either he or someone else stabbed someone in the bottom and he kept going on about how the injured person tore their a nal webbing. He'd never heard of a nal webbing and thought it was hilarious that there even was something called a nal webbing. And was mocking the fact he or the person who did the stabbing had tore an a nal webbing. I thought it was funny and he was quite sadistic in these moments. Everyone was in stitches. TBH I recall his talk being very orchestrated and he'd obviously done it so often it became natural as he was a great story teller anyway. After the event my wife and I went up for pics. I recall him being very out of it. Either under the influence of drugs or pain meds, he reminded me of Ronnie Coleman when I met him several times and he was taking strong painkillers and was pretty much out of it and comatosed. He was wearing a big navy trench coat that had a ton of white stains on the front like he'd been slavering. Gutted I can't find the pics but my wife has a pic with him still and you can see the state he is in. His bouncer Mark 'Hammer' Dixon was really pleasant and kept going on about the shape I was in. Back then I was 27ish, 100% drug free and around 88kg.. nothing special. I thought it was odd for his security to be impressed with a small natty.
