Yes, I just started using the Edge 50, the Sweet 50 in January 2023, and now that I am more familiar with those, and the Composer Pro II, I recently bought the Duble Glass II withe drop-in aperture discs which can shape the bokeh. Very pleasing results from all these lenses, the learning curve is not too steep, and the manual focus actually slow me down enough to improve my composition. I can see a few more LensBaby lenses in my future, as well.
Great video - came across it today because I just ordered some lensbaby-stuff. Great video - not too much talk and footage to watch. Thanks for sharing.
That is a pretty dope idea. I'm also going to test out the Burnside 35, which you should check out on their website. It has a bit more control and looks dope.
I am 67 years old been photographing since I purchased a Fujica ST 701 in 1974 while in high school. Never been a pro, I had a technical career. My wife tells me I am the only person she knows whose entire life is in pictures. Back in the days of film we used Vaseline to try to get the same effects, it was touch & go.
The old school hacks are still SO valuable. I like getting cheap polarizing filters and using them to lather up with Vaseline, add some distortion layers, or scratch up for various flares.
Cool, I'm a photographer in Eastern Oregon. I actually just got the Omni creative filter system and crystal expansion pack for Christmas. I played with it a bit today and wow it's so fun! I think I found my calling. Lensbaby is my style completely. I love surrealism and fantasy. The Sol45 with macro filters is next on my list and I'm just going to go from there. I can't believe how reasonable the prices are for these art lenses. To be honest, I am addicted. I want them all!
Dude that is epic!!! I’ve been meaning to grab their Omni pack! How do you like the crystals and other fun dangle accessories??! The ‘art lens’ isn’t for everyone. But sweet Jesus are they fun. I feel like it’s almost art therapy for me. It disconnects me from the typical process and lets me PLAY and explore in a way that I hadn’t since I was just a kid. I love it too!
Rachel, that is a great question. The Composer Pro 2 has the silver edge along its shell, which can twisted in order to lock down the angle. Getting it perfectly non-tilted is a bit of a guessing game, but for the most part you'll be good just eyeballing it. I hope that helps!
This is cool mate. Def dreamy! I’ve just bought a 150-600 for wildlife so I’m lens’d out at the moment! But these types of lenses might be my next! Nice video mate
I saw this lens at Photoplus Expo. Photography is not so easy with this lens. First off, they are all manual focus. Then you need to figure out what the floppy aspect of the lens does. Then you have to squint you eyes to focus in the special effect. You must be an artist to appreciate this lens.
You're totally right that these lenses take some patience and getting used to. I think the photography side is much more predictable than video, too. It feels much more exploratory to try to find your awesome, unique single frame shot, while in video I was trying to capture something, but kept getting pulled into the dreaminess of the lens style. SO... I think this type of lens is really powerful to facilitate a mood of shot, or a distorted perspective relating to a character or state of mind. Trying to masterfully capture the 'perfect' video scene is probably going to give you a bit of grief, so flow with the vibey style and see where it takes you. I'm totally impressed to hear that some feature films have used these lenses to add rich in-camera effects to some of their scenes, too. I dont know if you've seen their latest floating filter attachment called Omni, but I'm totally trying to get my hands on that to test out. (lensbaby.com/product-category/omni/)
Hi Nick, I also just received my Lensbaby with Edge 35 Optic and I'm finding that the focus ring that the optic fits into on the Composer Pro ii is loose fitting and kind of rattles. Are you experiencing the same behavior? is this normal? - Thanks!
Hey thank you for the comment! The small optics do fit in with a tiny bit of movement. If you’ve got a LOT of rattle movement, you should make a quick video of it and send it to me!
Oh this is cool, reminds me of before I got into photography and I was guilty of this trick on instagram with their filters as total noob... Can't believe I admitted that on a comment lol. Thankfully we've all grown from this, dude your videos rock!
@@NickWichman ha yeah I feel the same is being done with teal and orange. We need to control before we lose it. I use it in my photos but very subtly to add to my photos not change colours and put someone else's style onto mine. Ireland we have loads of grass, teal and orange makes grass look like straw or burnt grass, I dont want that lol
Sorry, I missed something :( maybe my level of understanding is too low. But if you can do the effects later on (listen to 1:30), Nick does the same effects before shooting. But then you are fu..... you can't go back. Isn't the beauty of digital that you can go back? Isn't the initial success of word processing based on the back and delete buttons? Remember how difficult it was in the time of mechanical type writers to deal with mistakes? Idem in photography. Every time I apply a filter to the extend I consider appropriate, I check 24 hours later and in 95% of all cases I significantly reduce the effect. Reducing the effect with lens baby that I considered appropriate while looking in the view finder; forget it. it would definitely not work for me. Or did I miss something? Please educate me better than Nick did. I am ready to learn.
You are totally right that you can simply add effects in post, but the purpose of these lenses is to be creative in-camera. Explore your creations through a creative lens that adds an artistic element to each shot, planned in advanced. Much like using a fisheye lens is a deliberate effect that is chosen to be used in-camera (which you COULD add a fisheye effect later), the more energy you can put into creating a beautiful shot in-camera, the less effects and post-production work you'll need to do in your editing software. I highly recommend trying out a creative lens or creative filter while shooting, if only to PLAY with your shots and find something magical.
Theres something about doing it manually with no editing. Its raw and its in the moment. It takes you out of your comfort zone. Its more analog. I use this lens and some of my most polarizing shots have come from this particularly with the sweet 35 on
Have you tried the Lensbaby lenses or other cool creative lenses?

Thanks! Let me know how you like the Lensbaby gear!
Nick Wichman yes, I will ... the lensbabies will arrive within the next days 😊
Dope! That's exciting!
This is epic. Wow. That footage looks bad ass bro. And the shots look amazing. Keep crushing it bro and mad respect ✊.
Thank you Rafael! I'm really stoked to have have the chance to shoot with those lenses. They're crazy and awesome. 🤙
I could see the Sweet 35 being used for a dream sequence or inebriated effect in storytelling, maybe a throwback segment or something too

@@NickWichmanthat’s a pretty good idea. Never would’ve thought of doing that, but it must give some pretty crazy results
The new intro sequence is pretty dope too btw

Too bad what is happened to Portland, a favorite of mine for many years.
can you tell me how to lock the composer in a non-tilt position so that I can use the twist 60 optic on it?
Rachel, that is a great question. The Composer Pro 2 has the silver edge along its shell, which can twisted in order to lock down the angle. Getting it perfectly non-tilted is a bit of a guessing game, but for the most part you'll be good just eyeballing it. I hope that helps!

SUPER dreamy! dude, you should try out some lens effect filters on that 150-600. Prism or something 🤙 I want to see it!
Nick Wichman great idea mate.
Yo, didn't know something like this existed! So dope!
yeah dude! They also have some other crazy lenses that I want to test out. Dreamyyyyy.
Great presentation!
Thank you Adrian! 🤙

Epic! I'm happy to help! I think you might be able to get some incredibly dope dreamy shots with that Sweet 35 🤙
