Uh let's be honest, any lightning moment is shocking.
Azula lightning bending while also losing her mind is an impressive feat!
04:29 - If you notice, Ozai is shocked at this point because he knew that his son Zuko trained the Avatar on how to redirect lightning like Zuko did to his father at 02:51
Not only he thought he might die, but due to the son he judged unworthy.
Nah
The most shocking lightning bending moment for me was when Azula zapped my main man Aang
That and Ming hua death both tie tbh
I just realized this now: Grey Delisle voiced both Azula and Minghua, the former being a powerful firebender who can generate lightning and the latter being a waterbender who was struck and killed by Mako who bent lightning towards her.
Also, she voiced Kataras mom

What I love is how unstable and all over the place Azula's lightning is at 3:17 representing that she herself is uncontrolled at the time. If you compare it with like 0:10 the strings look way more focused, as is she.
It also takes her much longer to create the final focused bolt
I think that is just the effect of the comet.
@@Ninjaananas now that you mention it, you can see the difference between Azula's lightning and her father's lightning. Not to mention, both of them, along with Zuko, Aang, and the rest of the firebenders got their power heavily charged up by the comet. Ozai's lightning was much more formed and spread out evenly because he's focused on hunting Aang down. Azula, however, still not over the fact that everything she envisioned has fallen beyond rebuilt. So despite Zuko being able to redirect most of it, her depression, combined with his rushed stances resulted in a portion of the lighting almost struck his heart.

I like how he try a thing and get a different one lol!
If lightning comes from pure Yin energy, maybe combustion comes from pure Yang, which is why it's so rare (like lightning was). So Zuko separated the energies successfully but his mind was clouded so he released the wrong one.
@@leiderhosen7110 Maybe you're up to something. But What Zuko did is not the same as the combustion we saw from sparky boom boom man or the lover of Zaheer. His is more of a backfire to the release of the energy without a straight path due to his clouded judgement. Combustion bending is more like the combination of air and fire much like the lava bending the combination of fire and earth. But seeing only those with the third eye can cast it and its main weakness is hitting it hence disrupting the release, maybe the eye isolates and charge the "yang" energy until it was released. They also inhale first hence adding the air to the combustion.

Is it wrong that I like Ozai's style of lightning bending? As a dual wield enthusiast, I love how he bends two lightning whips.
You're not alone
The sheer dedication and obsession by azula to perfect her bending makes her a true force.
The part where aang chooses to aim the lighting away from ozai is one of the most powerful ones in the entire series
The way zuko easily redirected his father's lightning was a difficult moment.
He didn't redirect it easily......the force pushed him back before he could redirect it
One this I noticed is how much the technique changes throughout the series. Azula and Iroh both take a bit of time to charge up the attack. Ozai’s is quick but still has visible arcing ahead of the blast. Meanwhile, Mako’s is pretty much instantaneous.
Mako is also weakest
There’s only two times Mako does it without the arcing motions. Against Amon while being bloodbent and against Ming-Hua. Look closely. The other times, he does it quick but still does the motion, just like General Iroh.

The fact that Iroh was surprised his own technique worked
If you're talking about the part where he redirected lighting from the ship deck then maybe it was the first time he's ever actually redirected lighting and he was surprised it worked
Like he worked it out in theory but he's never actually tried it before that moment
May well have been the first time he's had a chance to test his own technique, can't imagine he would have had lightning shot at him many times before. He also may not have known if natural lightning could be redirected in the same way that lightning generated by a firebender can
Probably because he doesn't know that Nature's Lightning can be redirected. It's hotter and more powerful than lightning that Firebenders creates.

Her movements are so compelling and the soundeffects that come with it
At that point she hasn’t learned instant lightning, but she did in the comics later on
I think it also reflects her mental state at the time. Earlier in the series, she is able to conjure lightning extremely quickly with nearly perfect form, but now her technique has become messy and adds many unnecessary moves. It also reflects Zuko and Azula’s fight where she only attacked with firebinding at the end. In the Agni Kai, Zuko is holding his ground and staying calm while Azula is overexerting herself. It really shows how Azula’s calculating personality and calm composure have broken down. I am now done ranting.

@@abolishgender3240 If it was something like blue fire-benders, like Azula, that would make sense but bending is just as much, if not more, about technique and skill than it is genetics. Iroh discovered lightning bending by adapting water bending techniques. Zuko may not have been able to fully achieve it but he at least learned to redirect it in the short time he spent training on it. What would stop a modern society with advancements in education and communication tech from being able to expand the spread of bending styles and skills. The same logic applies to Toph and metal bending. Nobody had done it before her (That we know of) and she managed to start an elite police force and I assume classes to learn it. I thought it was interesting that we see Azula use lightning in the very first episode of season 2 and It was ultimately what she used to knock out Aang at the very end of the season.
In ATLA the opposition of the lightning and redirecting lightening somewhat reflects the whole philosophy of the show and the way characters has been through. Lightning was a privilege of royal family only and was used by the strongest benders only. It played a crucial role in the plot. Lightning obtained a huge destructive power showing the bloodthirsty hazardous inhuman nature of war, fire nation at that time, and this destructive nature of fire was the only thing associated with the element until Aang and Zuko's meeting with the dragons. Redirecting lightning was invented by the most stable and whole character of the series - Iroh, on the basis of water bending techniques, which actually shows the main idea of the show (which also was explained by Iroh) - the need of tolerance and equality, that understanding other people and nations is the key to undestanding your nation and yourself, and that there is no superior nation. And then conveyed his wisdom to Zuko, like always. Zuko became able to use it only when he finally understood his way and opposed his father. Aang was nearly killed by Azula's lightning, and then it was an ability to redirect lightning that saved his life in the battle with Ozai and showed Aang's nature. The ability which he was taught of by Zuko, proving that Zuko was destined to help Aang restore the balance and that he was an important link to win this war. Lightning-desruction, muder, redirecting it - balance. (In this way Azula who learnt redirecting in the comicbooks also confronts this idea, even though physically it's quite logical that such strong firebender who's excellent at producing lightning learnt this skill).
And the fact that lightning is common in TLOK is, well, logical in the way of need of electricity, but still devastating and contradictory to the whole ATLA idea
Honestly, i feel like iroh should have taught zuko way earlier how to redirct lightning like after Azula tried to shoot lightning at zuko when he was on the ground.
Have you forgotten that Zuko hadn't reached a point where he would listen to anything yet?
@@pjbpiano i'm pretty sure he would listen since it's something which he could use for his own safety. However, he wouldn't have been able to pull if off since he was dealing with his own turmoil

ATLA lightning bending: very rare skill
LoK: Y'all hear sumn?
It's only rare in ATLA because its a secret kept by the Royal family. After Zuko became fire lord he likely taught or allowed it to be taught to citizens outside the family, especially since its an effective and efficient source of power, hence the power plant that Mako works in
Well lightning bend is still rare in LoK. There's like 4 characters who can lightning bend in LoK. Those workers probably not your average joe either

But have to absolutely love how Iroh taught Zuko how to redirect lightning and he proved his strength against his own ruthless father he once feared, but stood in his own strength he can for once be proud of doing, going against the evil he had to fear and grow with to change to the right.
That thumbnail is nightmare fuel...
Azula is just the best, period!!! And is still the ONLY firebender to posses Blue Flame (twice as Hot as normal fire) And she was 14!!!
LOVE IT THANK YOU!!!!!
Jokes aside, the most shocking lightningbending moment is definitely Xu Ping An. None of us saw that coming.
