Roof, LED Bar, Sun Visor - 4x4 Off-Road UTV Build Ep.28

- 4x4 UTV build continues! Fabricating windshield visor & installing 32" LED bar, fabricating roof, making interior framework and paneling to cover up the engine bay and make it safe for the driver.
This is part of a series of a four wheel drive utility vehicle build to lessen the work load on my trusty 2002 Honda Foreman Rubicon TRX500FA. This partially answers the question "Why?" but for those who want to ask "why don't you just buy a side-by-side instead of building one?" I just want to say - I'm not made of money. Side-by-sides are ridiculously expensive, even the car I drive around daily is worth less (not worthless though!), hell, it is even worth less than my 2002 Honda ATV.
"How much HP will it have?" - the 1.4 litre FWD petrol engine I'm planning on using has 55 kw and this will not change, but the torque will be tripled via the BMW differentials I'm using to transfer power to front and rear axles.
"It will be too heavy!" - this project just like the firewood processor project does not have to float. And a heavier vehicle will handle better anyway when hauling heavy loads.

U guy
What happened that amphibious tank you built?
Хороший джип. Ще трохи і буде весь обшитий і пофарбований. Лайк і підтримка.

15:10 "Looks like it grew there!" ...as they say here in Ireland. Or if it didn't work out so well: "Sure a blind man would be glad to see it!" Excellent build - constantly amazed at all the additions. Will be fit for polar circumnavigation when it's finished! 😂
The way you recycle that plastic container deserves admiration. Your imagination is as great as your skills.
In regards to the snorkle and electronics, once you're done with the major build, you could extend the important wires and move the brain box up in the roof portion in the corner by the windshield. Whatever's left down, well, a good application of sikaflex should solve that. :))
This is build is my favorite on your channel. The roof is genius.
Thank you very much!
Love that the pet detective is always ready to give his verdict on how good stuff fits.
This whole project is put together like a patch work quilt! I like that so "Patches" is a fitting name for this beast! Enjoyed 👍👍
Cool use of the "tote" Donn. Cheers.
Комментарий в поддержку канала и ролика, а также труда мастера.
Bravo! Superb! Great use for the old plastic. Clever thinking. I love this project! :)
You've done some amazing stuff but the roof is brilliant. Your ingenuity is inspiring, thank you.
I couldn't have said it better myself Neil.
Hi Donn,
Your skills are amazing, when I see you do all
these things, it reminds me growing up.
My Mom and Dad had 11 kids, and for that reason
we became very innovative, we built awesome
things from stuff people threw away.
Donn, it's incredible how resourceful you are.
My sincere compliments.
put a waste pipe upright on the side or on the back. it comes handy for tool to put in, like shovels, rakes, brooms
since you used a IBC tote for the roof, a IBC cage could easily be cut down and made into a roof rack for the top to hold extra tools/camping equipment etc. 😁 Love the build(s) and thanks for the vids as always!
Great job Donn, fantastic job and great fabrication skills. Thanks for sharing with us, Fred. Stay safe and keep having fun. 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👋👋
Thanks for watching. I know it has been a long project but it'll be over soon and onto new projects then. Thanks for sticking around. 👋👍
You’re doing a great job around there and we enjoy watching your videos!!
Dude you're a genius.
Discovered your channel recently and my jaw is on the floor.
Much respect from New Zealand.
Ohio USA watching ,,, waiting to see the trailer you come up with ,, wow , nice job so far ....
I've been your subscriber since when you had 50k subs and you have never failed my expectations. Keep up the good work dude!
The tracked amphibian got me hooked.
Хорошая работа. Лайк и только лайк.
Donn, please dont EVER stop making videos of your builds. 😊🙏
Thats awesome Donn. Love the repurposing of other stuff like the IBC tote.
Hello, handsome, as always, carefully and a special approach to every little thing.☝️😀👍👍👍
I was waiting for the "like a glove" when you fitted the roof.
A friend was storing stuff in some of those totes outside, and the plastic was very brittle and crumbly within a year. Even though you'll be storing it inside, be prepared to replace it before too long. I love this build! Until I get my shop built and fitted out, I'm living vicariously through you and your mad fabrication skills ;)
Glad you have got most of testing done and we can see the completion of this vehicle. This is probably one of the best home built utv s on you tube. Be great seeing all the work you have planned for it.
Great Video and Good Luck.
Awesome build. Can't wait to see it finished. The attention to detail is phenomenal!
Great work and great use of resources. Nice job on final touches
That's a real Tote Goat you have there. Hope the wife doesn't miss the baking racks:)
Super awesome 👏
Very nice work !! Covering is a important part for sure !! What a awesome build all the way around !! 👍👍
The use of the HDPE plastic from the ibc tote is really clever. I might build a roof for my tractor like that.
Достойная тачка 💪👍👋
So many ingenious solutions for this 4x4
Can't be said enough, You sir are awesome.
OK ! After I saw how you built the roof, I really think that you made choice for dimensions of your car BECAUSE you have this plastic tank in your garden (perfect dimensions for this roof !! ). One more times congratulations, all that you make is perfect !
That roof is perfect! Great idea Donn
**Best use of IBC tank yet!!
Next series: A camper trailer for the UTV so you can have a well deserved holiday?
Just an idea: add a wire basket thingy on the flat tote surface next to the driver for tiny stuffs
4:30, that's the fuel tank breather carbon canister, its purpose is to catch fuel fumes and send them back in the engine to be burned off when it's running. You could delete it (just cap off the line on the fuel tank and the line on the intake manifold).
18:08, paint really doesn't stick to HDPE very well.
I never thought of using a "TOTE" for body panels...great idea!
I would use something else if I had something else but I don't. So I just work with what I have. 😉
@@DonnDIY fwiw, it's very easy to thermoform plastic with a little heat. Heat entire fold line until softens, then bend and let cool, very quick and easy, you can easily do 90 degree Benda no trouble at all.
Or
Plastic weld seams
I butt seams together as you have, melt multiple joining holes through middle of joint that help align panels of joint, ie no ripples, then use thin strips of offcuts of same plastic as welding rods to weld seam, similar to regular welding, you can do one or both sides of seam. I've welded everything upto watertight water tanks successfully. With your skills you'll pick this up very quickly.
Any roughness from poor welding can be sanded out, any unwanted positioning screw holes can be easily removed./ filled.
Choose appropriate sized soldering iron based on how much you want to weld. Std electrical soldering iron will work, but bigger higher wattage iron works better and faster. Use reasonably ventilated.
As always , inspirational, great work
Donn, I really like the milk jug panels!!! That is an awesome way to recycle and if you damage them they are cheap and easy to replace. Excellent Idea i will have to use.
For the roof, get some rubber tube & split it down the length to make a "C" shape. Put it on the cut edge all around to give it a cleaner look & remove sharp edges. You might need some calking (or something similar) for glue inside to hold it...at least on the ends or every so often.
Dude I love your sh*t! Considered me subscribed!
AND...THANK YOU. While I always prefer spoken narration to a subtitle I get the fact english isn't your first language. You have moved them up to clear the dam progress bar and that is a first & I really appreciate that. I have a hard time reading (I am very dyslexic) and need to pause every now and then. Usually it is pointless but you give me a fighting chance! So THANK-YOU, THANK-YOU, THANK-YOU. =)
Belle vidéo comme d'habitude bon courage à vous pour la suite de votre projet
Like the ace Ventura like a glove great work looks awesome
This is what am waiting for, finishing is my favorite
That's a mighty fine looking roof you've got there, I admire your resourcefulness.
Thank you!
Excellent work 👍👍👍 . Thanks for sharing
Brilliant re-purposing of the tote! Couldn't have fit better for the roof.
The IBC roof is a masterpiece!
Thank you. My OCD needed this episode 👍
Очень интересно! Ждём продолжения.
Your creativity never cease to amaze me. 👍👍
Thank you very much!
Some pretty gooood improvements there Donn.
That thing is pretty compact so it should fit you like a glove !!!
Lol
Cheers from Sydney Australia again.

Finally!! A roof!! Dude, you need a welding blanket, you are going to ruin that jacket you are using. You need that for riding your motorcycles! LOL!!
Watched you for years & you're getting better & better! One thing to beware of with the plastic is the expansion on hot days/near an engine. You'll probably find your panels rippling unless you drill the holes for the fixings oversize & use penny washers under the fixing heads - it's a known issue with stuff like Stokbord recycled plastic sheet which is used lots on farms here in UK.
Идея с крышей отличная!!!
An awesome build! I think the spot at the back behind the gear shifter would be a great place for a first aid kit. It's always handy to have a small kit handy any time you are out where minor cuts & scrapes are likely.
Always cool stuff... can't wait to see it all painted.
I hope to paint and finish this project ASAP. 💪👍
: )
Nice work
That roof works better than my OEM one. Nice work!
I like the idea of using the fwd setup as front and read drive shaft.
Right on time I needed a new build vid🙏🏿💪🏿
Great use of materials. Don't forget a cup holder, it's the law these days.
Все геніальне просто. Лайк
Hello Donn the finishing touching they looking good well done my friend
Cheers!
"Like a glove-actually this needs to be trimmed a bit..." That's me on every single build project. 😂
Your snorkel will help keep the air filter clean. Generally there is more dust close to the ground, less dust the higher you go.
I'm hoping so.👍
Finally back!!!!! Thank you!!!!
Love the Roof!
Well worth the wait keep up the amazing work 👏
Looking great, a good bush basher.
Lets hope so!🤙
Love your work
Awesome job, as per all of your builds. Really loved the rock crusher! Be aware that plastic is not overly UV resistant. If you don't paint it, it will become brittle and break overtime.
Looking Good!
Great video
A contuation of ideas that's time has come.
Nice “center console” but where’s the beer holder eerrr I mean cup holder. 😂
To protect the light bar you could make a 'cage' of half circles out of round bar, it'll deflect branches but won't impede the light. I really like the use of the plastic for the roof it cuts down on weight for your centre of gravity.
Hi, marvelous work, many thanks.
ottimo lavoro come sempre
I'm sad that it's coming to the end! Excellent work as always!
Great success :D love the recycled plastic bodywork
I happened to buy a knock off grinder almost exactly like yours a few days before you showed it in that video and was glad to see you putting one to work, as mine hadn't arrived yet. Now that it has, I completely agree, for the price is def my favorite. I'm thinking I may have to try some of the other tools now too...
Yup. My plan with this grinder is to abuse it as much as I can and see how long it lasts straight out of the box. I did however swap the cheapo flimsy handle and disc guard on it for a sturdy original Makita parts (spares from burnt out angle grinders) just to be safer.
15:11 i was waiting for that when you installed the roof, but it fits even better here
Awesome bro! You got talent!!!
I like how you drill holes into your roof pipes to allow water to fill your frame :)
He has drain holes in most of the tubing when he built the frame.
@@leosimon9463 yeah but drilling holes on top through the roof will add a lot more moisture
@@RubenKelevra 🤷♂️ apparently you know best 🤪
Marvellous work
Cheers!
You amaze me man, love your videos, keep it up.
Cheers!
Very Nice!!
Orange? YES!
I'm still contemplating the color...
Great recycling of plastic, if wasn’t for you some turtle far away would have chocked on that container. 😆
It’s looking awesome, nice and utilitarian! 👍🏻
Still love it!
love the work you do. Would recommend getting a waterproof seat cover for wet weather working. :)
I thought u was gonna say like a glove with the roof also lol !
I really wanted to say it in my head. 😁
Pretty Good!
great work ,and I also advise you to put a grille in front of the fan propeller....
Don't forget to include a cup holder for your tasty beverages.
Есть в Русских сказках персонаж "Иванушка-дурачёк" Во вех историях, Иванушка выходил героем! Друг, не знаю твоего настоящего имени, но ты именно тот Иванушка, который всё может!
Awesome as hell my dude!! Love this build. Can't wait until the next video. Damn your talented. Also I love your rivet nut tool. Gotta get me one.
Yup, that rivet nut tool is a game changer.
Как всегда молодец
This is a post apocaliptic veicle! I love it.
