    He was suffering from Parkinsons disease when this video was made and he died of liver cancer just months afterwards. Cut the man some slack, I'm grateful to have this last interview with one of the giants of the comicbook medium.

    I came to know about Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman at around mid 2000's when I started to discover mid century illustration and now I can finally put a face to the names. God, I love Jack Davis!

    The two men I look up to as cartoonists and artists in comics. The sublime Harvey Kurtzman and the bigger than life Jack Davis. There were simply none bigger. R.I.P. all three of you great men.

    I can hardly see the video with all of the shade being thrown between Stan and Harvey. Also, Jack's a legend

      I think Stan was just trying to be a playful host, but maybe didn't know of Harvey's neurological condition, they are all of similar age. The end when Harvey says, "what's happening? My eyes are going" as the studio lights fade out tells all...

    when Stan said "I use to erase your signatures" Harvey looked at him like "What!"

    • @pulsarstargrave256
      @pulsarstargrave256 9 лет назад

      That was probably during the period when Timely (Atlas?) wasn't letting guys sign their work. I think they eased up on the policy sometime before or during Kirby's return in '59 or '60.

    • @cha5
      @cha5 9 лет назад +1

      Pulsar Stargrave I'm just guessing here but Stan's comment MIGHT also be a reference to some of Harvey's work for Timely (Atlas?) like 'Rusty' from 1949
      (a Dagwood & Blondie knockoff which Harvey really hated but was forced on him by publisher Martin Goodman)
      which I believe may be signature less, Harvey's earlier 'Hey Look' one page strips that he did for Timely (Atlas?) were all signed by him however.

    • @pulsarstargrave256
      @pulsarstargrave256 9 лет назад

      cha5 I know there was a period where artists signatures weren't being printed because a lot of those stories were reprinted in the 90s. I just can't pin down when it was. There was a period when Stan started getting credit shortly before Kirby returned but again, I can't remember precisely when. This is a job for Roy Thomas!

    I love these Interviews. Much better than the garbage on TV these days. Stan being himself interviewing the greatest artist & writers of our time is a breath of fresh air.
    And Mad Magazine had some amazing talent. Jack Davis with his distinct Caricature style, but Mort Drucker was my favourite for sure.

    This video could be dubbed in a foreign language, filmed in black and white, and with subtitles, and I would still favourite and like this video.
    This is just awesome, just awesome. Sad to see Kurtzman in ill health. It's hard to see anyone in ill health, it has to be said.

  • @windowzombie

    Damn the EC guys Jack and Harvey are both in their 70s here I think, pretty sure Stan was a similar age. Jack and Stan seem so well compared to the state that Harvey seems to be in, no wonder the men went on to their 90s, makes me feel for all of them. RIP all artists here, truly trail blazers in art and culture. I still try to emulate all these guys in my art. I've been searching for Jack Davis working on his art, always wondered what his process was in the EC days, this is the closest I could find even though it's not even ink!

    There will never be anybody like these guys. All of the EC artists are complete legends. To think that 70 years later we're still reprinting and putting out their comics for newer generations to enjoy is amazing to me. As much as I love the silver age of superhero comics, the EC stuff has barely aged a bit in my opinion.

  • @vollsticks
    @vollsticks 7 лет назад +7

    Two REAL masters here, more talent in their little fingers than virtually every artist who's appeared in this series. Those Hey Looks were amazing and Jack Davis could draw anything....Fun fact: The Harvey Kurtzman Checklist was authored by Glenn Bray, master collector of comics, comics ephemera and original art (as well as being the executor of Stanislaus Kulawski's estate), whose collection is showcased in the great Blighted Eye book from Fantagraphics.
    Poor Harvey, you could really see the effects of the Parkinson's Disease that eventually killed him.
    Man, this is the best in the entire fucking series.

    Really funny video! I think the funniest video I the Comic book Greats Series. I loved watching Stan and Harvey tease each other. You can tell they've known each other for a long time, and they have. Since the '40s??? Jeez! All three of them had great chemistry on screen together. Too bad there weren't more interviews with them riffing each other.
    Harvey had that old-school sense of Jewish humor. Really funny dude! Reminds me of some of the old-timers in my neighborhood. Great vid!

    Kurtzman, Elder, Davis, and Wood were the backbone of brilliance and funny for Mad's first 30 or so issues. Later on, Clarke, Woodbridge, Drucker, and Martin held it together. When I need a laugh, I go back to those issues. I'm still in awe of the quality that those artists maintained.

    • @roymakescomics

    Harvey didn't seem so good in this video, I read the comments below so I got a general idea of the problems he was having at the time but it is good to see that Stan Lee really was happy he was there and helped carry him through this and probably brought him on to do him some justice for the body of work he has already done!
    Both of the guys was Harvey were truly great people and I'm sure Harvey was too! At this point I could probably say R.I.P to all three of them unfortunately....

    I'm surprised that "Comic Book" is present as two words instead of one. I know that Stan was a big stickler for the correct term being Comicbook -- one word -- because as two words, the phrase "comic book" conveyed that the books were of a humorous or comical nature.

    Funny how Stan says how amazing and popular Hey Look! was, but made Harvey draw cliché Blondie-copy fillers (Rusty) instead due to lack of Hey Look!'s popularity at the time (when Harvey made fillers at Timely/Marvel)... witch drove Harvey MAD, literally :D Sums up Lee's personality pretty well, but this is show business I guess.
