If we go to simple facts, we see that the russian army is slaughtering unarmed civilians, tries to make their life a living hell(they even bragged several times:"we're going to send them to 18th century!"), steals everything they possibly can, etc.
They tried the same "tactics" in Georgia, in Chechnya, in Moldova and now in Ukraine.
The real motivation is simple: Russia felt insulted when Ukraine wanted to get closer to EU and distance itself from Russia. Everything else, is just Putin's fabulation, every single day, this monster tried to come up with a newly invented motivation for his invasion.
