Andrey Baranov | Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1 | Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition 2012

26 years old Andrey Baranov from Russia playing the Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor by Dmitri Shostakovich in the finals of 2012 in the Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition. Baranov was the winner of that year's QE competition.
Born in St Petersburg in 1986 into a family of musicians, Andrey began playing the violin at the age of five. He attended the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St-Petersburg and Consevatoire de Lausanne. He studied with Lev Ivaschenko, Vladimir Ovcharek, Pierre Amoyal. Andrey also has taken masterclasses from B. Kushnir, L. Isakadze, K. Kashkashian among many others.

Одно из лучших за последние годы исполнений этой невероятной вещи. Если не лучшее.
Сыграно с полным пониманием того, ЧТО играет солист. О техническом совершенстве не говорю. Сейчас многие технари.
Глядя на запись, понимаешь, зачем солисту нужна эта 10-секундная пауза в начале четвертой части (о которой умолял еще Д.О. Ойстрах перед первым исполнением). А потому что после каденции в конце третьей части солист вымотан до предела, и не только физически. Он выплескивается весь, без остатка. Если, конечно, понимает, ЧТО он играет в этой каденции.
А бывают технари, которые играют ровненько-ровненько. И никакая пауза им не нужна. Они профессионалы. Могут еще час отыграть.
Браво, Андрей. Блистательная запись. Спасибо огромное.

Coming here from Narita - Bold choice with the Shosty, ehh with the interpretation. I'm gonna go ahead and say that the result came down to politics in the jury. It was unwinnable for Narita, and for some reason this kid was propelled to the top.

I was there in person. The veredict was obvious to anyone with working ears, even though Narita played well, with great taste and personality. You can't picture from the recording the absolute intensity of sound, character and emotional investment in Baranov's all-russian final phase. All finalists play violin and politics, but Baranov seemed to be in a whole different musical dimension.
