Jack you should do another judging books by it’s cover video, but instead of ones you liked, read books you wouldn’t ever read based on the cover and see if they’re any good!
The way in which you described the cover of “Topics of conversation” was a glorious reflection of your literature education. A pleasure to listen to your beautiful interpretation
The saying was coined or at least is best attributed to Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights Movement when black people were fighting racial segregation and discrimination in the US. I don’t think this saying was ever seriously intended to apply to actual books in the way that Jack has in this light-hearted and comedic video.
The description is more important ofc but the cover has a huge influence in whether or not you'll even pay attention to a book. So far, there are two reasons why I wanted to read a book: 1. It was recommended to me 2. The cover was whispering to me

Have you tried listening to audiobooks and reading something you really wanted to try for a while at the same time? I feel like when my attention wanders about, listening to the audiobook while also reading the book myself kinda helps. It helps to set up an ambiance that is less likely to make one want to watch/listen to something else. You can also try breaking the slump by rereading something you've really enjoyed in the past or reading somewhere with no access to the internet :D
"This is How you Lose The Time War" definitely has a really great second act, but for me I also enjoyed the first half! The letters were witty and some of the settings were so cool, like an ancient bone temple, a dying plant, and an abandoned hospital in the middle of the woods. If you are a fan of sci-fi I think these settings make the first half more appealing! It also contains cute pop-culture references. This book made me laugh and cry, I highly recommend especially if you enjoy time travel/romance/poetry! My favorite quote from the book: "Flowers grow far away on a planet they'll call Cephalus, and these flowers bloom once a century, when the living star and its black-hole binary enter conjunction. I want to fix you a bouquet of them, gathered across eight hundred thousand years, so you can draw our whole engagement in a single breath, all the ages we've shaped together."
"This is how you lose the time war" had the exact same effect on me! I bought it because of the cover and because I like stories about time. I had trouble getting into it, I was so confused. But when I finished it, I was like "5 stars, no questions asked"....I didn't even know how it happened, but it did and I regret nothing xD

3 books I definitely wanna read in 2022: 1. Blindness by Jose Saramago 2. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid 3. No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai (anapiiri2)
I feel like "don't judge a book by its cover" applies to everything in life except on books. 😂 I mean, a cover usualy shows the vibe of the story so...
Hi Jack! Here's my list: - The Blessing Stone - Barbara Wood - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes - Caitlin Doughty - The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid ladybug.513
(Swirlingpastels) 3 books I want to read this year are: - Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan - Pachinko by Min Jin Lee - The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa
I'm reading Pachinko, right now. Its really enjoyable, the character it focuses on is very interesting. I love how the character grows and matures. I think you'll really enjoy it. It also explains the life of Koreans during the Japanese colonization.
I actually liked that this is how you lose the time war was sort of slow! I feel like a lot of sci fi/fantasy is very fast paced and more about plot than characters, and because I read a lot of sff I think I sort of end up feeling like the destination is more important than the journey- I’m reading to finish the book, rather than to enjoy the process of reading. So this is how you lose the time war forced me to sort of slow down and focus on the character development, the writing, the little changes between chapters, rather than whatever major plot events happened.I was able to enjoy reading the book, rather than just “yay, the mystery is solved!” And I am SO excited to reread
“Things have gotten worse since we last spoke“ was my first book of 2022 and it was certainly something to start off a year with. I also read it in one sitting and was just sat staring at a wall for a while afterwards. A 10/10 for me tbh
Hi jack! Something I kind of noticed like when you were talking about the second book is that sometimes you show a book but dont read the title out loud. I would appreciate it if you read them out loud more often as sometimes I'm not always looking while listening and it's probably helpful for people hard of sight as well!
Love in Colour is absolutely brilliant, it was my first 5 star read of 2022 and I’m still thinking about it; how amazing was the writing?! 😭 Funnily enough I put it off because I felt like I wanted to read it because of the pretty cover… ended up loving the content more than the cover!
Literally screaming watching the first book review!!! I went to college with Eric and we were in some of the same writing classes. Such a talented writer!!!
I judge books by their cover all the time 😅3 books I want to read in 2022 are: - Atomic habits by James Clear - Normal People by Sally Rooney - Before de coffee gets cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi (paumartiiinezz)
Here's my list :) 1. The wall of Winnipeg and me - Mariana Zapata 2. Normal People - Sally Rooney 3. The house on the cerulean sea - TJ Klune amberrrrrrrr.xo
OMG this video is SO wholesome Jack! 3 Books I wanna read this year are (2022): - On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong - My Policeman by Bethan Roberts - Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrel (twildeversion)
The way Jack explained the book cover of "topic of conversion" is exactly the way my literature teacher explains the line " she was having a pretty normal day" for 1hour😆😆
totally glad to hear someone be honest about this is how you lose the time war because ooh yeah the beginning had me struggling and then yeah glad i stuck with it because the messages to each other are just so beautiful and really make you feel but have not heard many say what you shared about the first part.
loved the video! you could do a “expectations vs reality” video, like where you tell us what you expect from the plot, the cover, the writing and then what it actually was. You could also make that interactive by making us pick the books on your insta story! I think it could turn out pretty fun and close to your style here on youtube. Love your videos!
The summary of a couple of these books reminds me of The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. It has a start where you have no idea what’s going on and then lots of twists and turns and in the end you only get enough info to solve near the end. BUT it might be worth the reread. Would love your thoughts if you’ve read it.

Like I love that you always come up with such an interesting and natural way to blend the sponsor into a video - and as a result, of all the RUclips partnerships I've seen Karma do, this is the first time I'm seriously considering downloading it? Like what a cool idea to narrow down your to-buy pile!
i love this! and the books i wanna read in 2022 are:
- the atlas six
- the secret history
- beloved
(lettersfrommalaika)
jack: "reading books and buying books is two different hobys"
me: The story of my life
If only I could buy them as hobbies lmao. To me they're the same. Also I Don't have an access to a library :'(
"That's not just cheesy that's a whole charcuterie board" 😂 I'm going to be using that!
"This is about self-awareness and not self-improvement." 🤣🤣 as expected Jack knows where it's at
I love how extensively you think about these book covers and the books themselves- it’s like you went to college for it /s
Also I think you should do a video where you read/reread children’s/middle grade books, I’d love for you to give your insight on them!
Jack, i have to confess my name used to be “Jack Edwards Superfan”. But since starting school again, many awkward conversations came up about my e-mails name. Thus I have changed my name. I hope that you can forgive me. Much love - your superfan
The way you analyze these book covers…I could never
these covers are gorgeousss. i maaay have decided to read This is how you lose a time war also in great part bc of that cover too.
I'd say tho, i'd seen people talking abt how it's a weird read at the beginning so i went for audiobook to help with the pacing and let me tell you, stunning. the narrators are amazing, and bc its a very poetic book, it was incredible to hear it out loud. i loved ittt
3 books I definitely wanna read in 2022:
1. Blindness by Jose Saramago
2. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
3. No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai
(anapiiri2)
I feel like "don't judge a book by its cover" applies to everything in life except on books. 😂 I mean, a cover usualy shows the vibe of the story so...
Hi Jack! Here's my list:
- The Blessing Stone - Barbara Wood
- Smoke Gets in Your Eyes - Caitlin Doughty
- The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid
ladybug.513
(Swirlingpastels)
3 books I want to read this year are:
- Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan
- Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
- The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa
I'm reading Pachinko, right now. Its really enjoyable, the character it focuses on is very interesting. I love how the character grows and matures. I think you'll really enjoy it.
It also explains the life of Koreans during the Japanese colonization.
I actually liked that this is how you lose the time war was sort of slow! I feel like a lot of sci fi/fantasy is very fast paced and more about plot than characters, and because I read a lot of sff I think I sort of end up feeling like the destination is more important than the journey- I’m reading to finish the book, rather than to enjoy the process of reading. So this is how you lose the time war forced me to sort of slow down and focus on the character development, the writing, the little changes between chapters, rather than whatever major plot events happened.I was able to enjoy reading the book, rather than just “yay, the mystery is solved!” And I am SO excited to reread
my tbr list at this point is just full of your recommendations and i love that
“Things have gotten worse since we last spoke“ was my first book of 2022 and it was certainly something to start off a year with. I also read it in one sitting and was just sat staring at a wall for a while afterwards. A 10/10 for me tbh
IT WAS MY FIRST BOOK TOO :) i felt the exact same yea
Hi jack! Something I kind of noticed like when you were talking about the second book is that sometimes you show a book but dont read the title out loud. I would appreciate it if you read them out loud more often as sometimes I'm not always looking while listening and it's probably helpful for people hard of sight as well!
Yea I’m hard of sight and I second this
If you like pretty books (I mean who doesn’t) I really recommend “The Octunnumi” by Trevor Alan Foris, it’s the prettiest book I ever bought.
I’m so happy to see Jack affirming our notion in subverting mainstream narratives around the covers of books 😂
The way Jack described the cover of the second book *chef's kiss*
Timestamp 0:23 Jacks top makes him look like a weird mashup of a monk praying for the dinasaurs
WHY DOES THIS BEAUTIFUL SOUL NOT HAVE A MILLION FOLLOWERS????LIKE SERIOUSLY
4:59 oh to be vibing about art with jack edwards
Love in Colour is absolutely brilliant, it was my first 5 star read of 2022 and I’m still thinking about it; how amazing was the writing?! 😭 Funnily enough I put it off because I felt like I wanted to read it because of the pretty cover… ended up loving the content more than the cover!
i paused the video 4 mins in because you ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT CALL YOURSELF DAFT. you're an inspiration.
I have recently been watching the RUclipsr Divya G because she analyses and remakes book cover trends and designs and it's a lot of fun
i LOVE her
@@jack_edwards me too!! ❤️
Literally screaming watching the first book review!!! I went to college with Eric and we were in some of the same writing classes. Such a talented writer!!!
I loved Time War so much. I might have to re-read it now.
I know this video is two years old, but man i appreciate your humour Jack. You bring such joy to talking about and thinking about books.
*_Jack is too creative with his videos. You'd think that he has covered every book-related topic, but here he is again..😂_*
As soon as you said they are red and blue and on opposing teams, I knew they are going to fall in LOVE.
I judge books by their cover all the time 😅3 books I want to read in 2022 are:
- Atomic habits by James Clear
- Normal People by Sally Rooney
- Before de coffee gets cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
(paumartiiinezz)
Here's my list :)
1. The wall of Winnipeg and me - Mariana Zapata
2. Normal People - Sally Rooney
3. The house on the cerulean sea - TJ Klune
amberrrrrrrr.xo
We are loving these regular uploads Jack 😍
OMG this video is SO wholesome Jack!
3 Books I wanna read this year are (2022):
- On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong
- My Policeman by Bethan Roberts
- Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrel
(twildeversion)
The way Jack explained the book cover of "topic of conversion" is exactly the way my literature teacher explains the line " she was having a pretty normal day" for 1hour😆😆
'this is about self-awareness, not self-improvement' honestly same
This is fav sentence- “I am a simple man, I see Sally Rooney and I purchase!”
Hats off Jack 🧢
My heart dropped when I saw “things have gotten worse since we last spoke” on the list
I loved hearing you talk about the covers! Would appreciate if you could include more of it in future videos, too ☺️
Hey jack, can you please do a video reading all the books mentioned in ‘the perks of being a wallflower’ book!!!???
“PanDEMI LEVATO” is definitely what im going to use in my daily vocabulary
totally glad to hear someone be honest about this is how you lose the time war because ooh yeah the beginning had me struggling and then yeah glad i stuck with it because the messages to each other are just so beautiful and really make you feel but have not heard many say what you shared about the first part.
when you said you already had the best content ready for 2022, you really weren’t lying.
1. Mayflies - Andrew O'Hagan
2. My Year of Rest and Relaxation - Ottessa Moshfegh
3. Open Water - Caleb Azumah Nelson
-sabandbooks
loved the video! you could do a “expectations vs reality” video, like where you tell us what you expect from the plot, the cover, the writing and then what it actually was. You could also make that interactive by making us pick the books on your insta story! I think it could turn out pretty fun and close to your style here on youtube. Love your videos!
This is how you lose the time war - literally one of my favorite books ever, it’s so beautiful
I just love how structured Jack's videos are!
wow jack is doing the absolute most with putting out content lately
My wishlist!
A Marvellous Light - Freya Marske
Crying in H Mart - Michelle Zauner
Outline - Rachel Cusk
:)
3 books i want to read in 2022 are:
-alone with you in the ether
-a thousand splendid suns
-autobiography of red
(marelaeremans)
Can recommend a thousand splendid suns!!! One of the best books I read 2021
@@JH-ce8rq I wholeheartedly agree. A Thousand Splendid Suns was an eye opener for me. That and Kite Runner! Absolutely beautiful books!
LOVE you so much for naming translators!!!!! and cover designers! you're a GEM!
