I like the idea of Denise knowing who Jack is while packing the books, and decided it would be funny to send over half the stack as books Jack would genuinely enjoy, and the other half being completely ridiculous meme books just to make him go, "what the actual fuck". Denise is cracking up so hard watching this video.
I love getting thrifted books because sometimes you find the most random things from a previous owner inside. Once my friend bought an economics book from eBay and found a veterans card to a man named Luigi C Rasetti. We did some digging (which took a while; I even had to make an ancestry account!) And turns out he was born in Italy, served in WW2, and moved to the United States. He passed away long ago, but we try to remember his birthday each year.
The fact that you just described Maurice as the film where Hugh Grant "has the most incredible curtains you've ever seen outside your grandma's house" is legit sending me.
You reading the description of the last book (The other side of the fire) sounded like someone who has never watch a reality tv show explaining the extrem drama of a reality tv show
fun nerdy fact: orange is the rarest of favourite colours, followed closely by yellow with blue being the most popular favourite colour, closely followed by purple
honestly, while i was reading Forster's novel, there was a very prevalent undercurrent of colonial sentiment, which i obviously expected, but forster also takes care to explain the pitfalls of the british empire in india, and why reconciliation with their indian subjects was impossible by the end of the raj era. i actually liked the book, there are a lot of truths in it.
this reminds me of high school when my english teacher would lend books to students that he thought they'd enjoy and he gave my friend a really weird book about like murder and bestiality (with a frog I think?) and a mum who slept with her son
I saw Mary Renault and I WEPT- if you like Song of Achilles Mary Renault is definitely the next step her books are so good. (Highly recommend 'Fire From Heaven' for some Alexander the Great and Hephaestion content)
I am a huge fan of E.M. Forster's books so when you mentioned 'A Passage to India' I freaked out. When you mentioned 'Howards End' and 'Maurice' I freaked out even MORE. I love the films, but have never really gotten ahold of the books. I was wondering if you could review some of the books one day, especially Maurice since it's one that I've been DYING to see someone talk about. Moreover, you have an amazing way with words and overall I really think you'd be fitting for it. Thanks for the video :)
Mary Renault's books are wonderful!! She has several others about Greek mythology besides the Bull from the Sea, some about Theseus and some about other mythical figures. I know you loved the Song of Achilles & so I think you'll also love Renault, she's similar to Miller in how she retells myth with lyricism and emotion and taut, evocative language.
@Nicky L In my town in Costa Rica cousins also get 💞 along 💞 very well. And it has to do with the little population at the beginning of 20th century. Marriage with cousins is actually really natural but also fun because of the taboo haha
So excited for you to read the bull from the sea, esp since you liked the song of Achilles! That’s how I learned about Renault too. One of the praises for Madeline Miller on the cover of my edition of TSOA was: “Mary Renault lives again!”
Love the title of this channel. In general, I thoroughly enjoy the weird and self-deprecating humour. I am about 3 times your age, but I also did a lit degree, a LOT of years ago because I had read a book or two that yanked me in. Animal Farm, The Chrysalids, Heart of Darkness, and a few Shakespeare plays from Grade 8 to 12. I am a proud geek.
I can’t breathe, this is killing me “Where he has the most incredible curtains you have ever seen outside of your grandma’s house” “DENISE, this is WILD” “you little minx”
Love your jumper! My friend gifted me a necklace for Christmas (received it today, lockdown things xx ) and it is the same colours as part of your jumper! The pale purple and bright orange
Love it!!! This totally makes me want to purchase a mystery box of books 📚!?! Your content is always a great delight- thank you for putting a BIG smile to my face!!! :D
i highly, HIGHLY recommend Mary Renault especially since you love Greek mythology! I have read her books related to Alexander the Great (obviously not myths but still) and she has a great way of transporting you back to the time, her writing is wonderful and from what i've heard she really used primary sources and did a lot of research before writing them so you're in for a treat! great pick
This had me howling with laughter on more than one occasion 😂 and my desire for everything to match is so satisfied with the fact that you also wore an orange jumper.
Some of these books sound really intriguing, whereas others... *hears Sweet Home Alabama playing in the background* As others have said, it would be really cool if you could do a review of each of them once you've read them, as I'd love to hear your thoughts! I do love Mary Renault, so I really hope you'll enjoy her. She's really a gem when it comes to Greek mythology / depictions of the ancient world. I also highly recommend the last of the wine by her if you do want to delve further into her works if you do end up liking it. Anyway, happy reading!
Love the shout out to Maurice. Underrated book and film IMO. A Passage to India is a bit of an anti-colonial tract, at points of its time but definitely critical of English imperialism.
I cannot believe you mentioned the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, I read the book six or seven years ago and had forgotten the name. I’ve been searching for it for YEARS!!!
Mary Renault; wonderful re-interpretations of the Greek myths, a winner. As for Miss Read, probably a bit tame for you unless you hanker for village life mid 20th century in the Fens!

Recent classics grad here! Mary Renault is SUCH a staple author for Greek mythology, I'm excited to see what you think of her book!
The one dislike is from Prince Phillip and Queen Elizabeth II’s joint account for that incest joke
