After 9/11 she was the first musical guest back on David letterman. She did a cover of a song called " time" Letterman was crying when she finished. You should look it up ok youtube
Scarlet's Walk is a quiet but fascinating and brilliant album. It weaves together multiple narrative threads: -It's partially the story of "Tori" -It's partially the story of a young woman named Scarlet, who is of American Indian ancestry (and obviously a Tori analogue who represrnts an aspect of Tori's psyche while giving Tori the freedom to create fictional storylines about her) -It's the story of the United States after the September 11, 2001 tragedy -It's the story of the American Indian people after the Trail of Tears tragedy -It's the story of the *land* of North America, who has a spirit and a consciousness The different narrative threads are rich in meaning, and the different threads often overlap and tie together. Gold Dust is the last song on the album and it touches on all of them; however, I think its primary focus is the birth of Tori's daughter Tash, giving a flash of hope following so many tragic events that happened before. Tori grew up near Washington, D.C. (where I happen to live), and the song is full of references to playing in the city (the reflecting pool, cherry blossom canopy, we raced to Langley) as a girl, flashes of nostalgic memories of her youth. And the mentions of DC in this era also imply everything that comes with American politics, of which she has always been fairly critical. The capital city is part of the backdrop of her life, and it looms in a lot of her music the way it does in our lives. Her music often references the historic violation of American Indian tribes by the US government, and she grew up very close to her Eastern Cherokee grandfather from North Carolina in addition to being immersed in the political culture of DC. To me, the takeaway of the song is that we have always had something precious right in the palm of our hand and we never realize it and often destroy it or throw away something we will regret having lost. Now that she has her daughter, she realizes she is holding gold dust in her hand, which is something she will always regard as precious and she has learned to "freeze that frame" and record the fleeting moments of precious joy before they slip away. The song is kind of sentimental, which was rare for Tori at this time, but she did go on to write some sentimental songs about both her daughter and her mother. But I think the sweet, sentimental nature serves as a well-earned relief to add hope and joy (albeit melancholy forms of those) following an album that addeesses some very heavy issues such as terrorism, broken treaties, corrupt politics, prostitution and exploitation of women, addiction, articicially created racial identities, fickle notions of 'freedom' and so on.
One of the things I love about your channel and your people, request songs I've never heard. I love Tori and I've never heard this song!!! THAT WAS GORGEOUSLY HAUNTING. I LOVED THAT. THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS ONE.
this song is from the album Scarlet's Walk which is absolutely worth the listen. If I remember correctly, she said the album was like travelling across the USA and its history. Personally, this album marked the end of a very long relationship and has an extra layer of nostalgia... which makes it a little close to the bone to listen through. Small portions but for the good of my tearducts lol
can you believe this is not even a music video but rather a bonus visualette that was originally only on the collectors edition DVD that came with the album. And the visuals are so good.
Oh wow! I didn't think you would do another Tori Amos reaction. This song is haunting. "Looking back, we'll understand, we held gold dust in our hands" Goosebumps. This song is a beautiful and cinematic journey. Thank you for sharing. This is next level artistry.
What a great and thoughtful reaction, thank you. I got chills when you talked about your daughter because, as I’m sure you got from the lyrics, the second part is about her daughter. I just love those lyrics reflecting back to pregnancy and birth as precious memories, as gold dust. “Letting names hang in the air What colour hair? Autumn knowingly stared (Auburn crimson) And the day that she came I'm freezing that frame” 😭
I think you are the first reactor to do this one. One of my favorite Tori songs and maybe the only one where the studio version is the one to go with. The orchestration combined with her keys and vocals and the lyrics make it my favorite from a studio perspective. A couple others worth a studio listen are 'I can't see NY' off this same album 'Scarlets Walk', and 'Hey Anastasia' of 'Under the Pink'. Otherwise you want to do the live versions.
I am so glad and grateful this song was requested. It really struck a chord with me. Thanks so much for watching and the recommendations. Excited for more of Tori's music.
@@SaeedReacts. The 'She' Tori describes freezing the frame for in this song is her daughter. The album is about 10 years after her acclaimed debut (Little Earthquakes). It is a very different, more mature, more balanced, less fiery version of her-self. She had been through miscarriages -- compare this album with the one containing 'iieee'. Some fans dropped off after her first 4 albums which were all great, but this album is one of her best.
Great reaction again! This is exactly the reason i first got into tori, not only is the piano talent there, its reference dressed in metaphor dancing in Allegory. Her writing is amazing, and layers deep. Lots of fun song analysis!
There is no one who does what she does. This song is unspeakably, achingly beautiful. She is a genius, and I don't go tossing that word around lightly. And more than that, she is a genius with heart and soul. She leaves it all out there so you feel it in your bones, weaving through you.
Cooling - live from sessions at west 54th is a must watch. Cooling is a song that was never put on an album but loves to be played live. Lyrically and musically a masterpiece. It was a tough call between West 54th version and Welcome to Sunny Florida, but I’ll say 54th. ruclips.net/video/3H1PD_u3cOo/видео.html
I have been enjoying your reactions to Tori so much and really look forward to them. You have so much insight into her work and bring an interpretation that I didn't consider, even after listening to this album since 2002. How did it go so fast, indeed. It feels like I blinked and woke up 40 years old. I'm so grateful that you shared your story with us! Your daughter must have the soul of an artist. Also, huge props to the subscribers suggesting these songs! Really cool choices that step off the typical Tori Amos timeline. I really hope you keep these coming! Thank you, sincerely, for taking the time to share your journey with us. ❤
Thanks so much for the kind words! It goes so fast. "The days are long, but the years are short." This song definitely gave me that feeling. Tori is an amazing artist. Definitely exploring more. 1 more reaction coming later today. Take care!
OK, going on that story that you told about your daughter, please listen to “Ribbons Undone” by Tori for her record The Beekeeper. I warn, tears will be had, but I think you will love it
John Philip Shenale, who is a long time collaborator of Tori's and who arranged the strings for this song, said that he wept as he was working on it. Not hard to see why. Thanks for your great reactions. You're the best.
My favourite Tori song bar none ❤. As you referenced the one and only Joni, listen to her exquisitely beautiful "Lesson In Survival"; you will love it.
For me (no idea if it was her intent of her meaning, haven't looked it up yet) but the gold dust slipping through our hands is the time we have. It's worth more than anything else and we don't appreciate it when we have a lot of it.
after several miscarriages, Tori had her daughter Natashya before this album "Scarlet's Walk" came out, and those lyrics ... "letting names hang in the air, what color hair, autumn knowingly stared, and the day that she came I'm freezing that frame, and somewhere Alfie smiles and says enjoy her every cry" is most likely in reference to Tash

Scarlet’s Walk is truly a beautiful album….and the older you get the more it resonates
Such a beautiful song. Love the reaction video. This one gets me every time.
Beautiful song. Thanks for watching.

Will do!

Yes, Langley is in the vicinity of Washington, DC. Lots of cherry trees. She grew up in Baltimore.
Thanks so much for letting me know.

Really well said .. she dose things to me inside and personnel that no other artist dose
