She's always like that. She makes music with her whole body and the piano is also her body. There's so much to enjoy from her! Winter is a wistful song but you caught the ferocity under it... She also has songs that are anger distilled through a piano or harpsichord. Very cathartic.
Lots of grief and anger in her work. Lots of very human experiences made into art. She's a force all her own. Once in a while an artist comes along who feels almost otherworldly - like there was no chance they wouldn't create this art, the only question is whether anyone would notice. That's Tori.

In November of 1992 I saw Tori Amos perform her masterpiece brilliant debut album "Little Earthquakes" at a tiny 200-seat auditorium on Marquette University's campus. I snagged an alumni ticket and was immediately both mesmerized and blown away by Tori's passion and talent. I'm convinced, to this day, that there's a hole in that stage floor where she relentlessly pounded her heel to keep time and beat. I have seen her 11 more times since, here in Milwaukee and she remains my favorite female artist of all time. She is remarkable!

Born Myra Ellen Amos, changed to Tori later, crawled up to a piano at the age of 2 and just started playing, by 3 she was able to duplicate songs she'd only heard once, by 4 composing her own music, and at age 5 she was the youngest person to this day to get a scholarship to the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Tori was also kicked out of that program at age 11 for what she called musical insubordination, she refused to learn to read sheet music, she preferred to play by ear, and she preferred rock and roll to classical music. Tori has said she had a form of synesthesia where she sees compositions as structures of color and light, and she sees her songs as actual, fully formed characters, her "girls" as she calls them, and sometimes they fight for a place on the record, or decide not to be, just as sometimes they show up to the show she's playing, or they don't, it's up to them.

  • @NewFalconerRecords

I believe that this winter is the last winter of her childhood. Spring and summer are around the corner and puberty is about to hit. Her Dad knows this. That's what I think this song is about.
Interestingly, her father was a Methodist pastor and her first resident gig was playing piano in a gay bar when she was 13 years old. A lot of her father's friends were concerned about her safety at playing at such a place. He said that it was probably the safest place for a young girl to be playing at. I was obsessed with Tori Amos for a while there in the early '90s. Her first three albums are all masterpieces. Her later albums are probably great as well, but I drifted away from her music. With some artists they give you just what you need at a certain time in your life and Tori did this for me back then.

Yes, Tori is both kind and a force of peace. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting her at a meet and greet, but she's done literally hundreds. Photos and videos show her smiling and hugging and showing empathy. It's part of her process. She meets people, hears their stories, reads their letters, and finds inspiration for more songs about the human experience and growth. And then you hear the stories of those she's met and how much her support meant to them. How her music has saved lives. Tori's impact cannot be understated. She also cofounded RAINN, the Rape and Incest National Network. Her song, Me and a Gun, is partially autobiographical.

It's all true. I did interact with her at a meet and greet once, and she was amazing and totally willing to play along with my ridiculous photo request. To this day, every time I see her I'm reminded of her wonderful energy. It bugs me that she was often treated as a punchline by a lot of people who scoffed at her and dismissed her music based on a stereotype of her they learned from mainstream media or whatever. Just look at the quality of this performance. It's a sad commentary on our culture.

Tori Amos is amazing. Watch the live Montreux concert performance of “Me and A Gun”. She did it before this song in the set if I recall. It’s absolutely stilling and moving at the same time.
Calling Tori a rebellious Disney princess is apt. She was the youngest person , a literally prodigy, to get into the most prestigious music school in the World and she got thrown out before even becoming a teen bc she was ‘musically insubordinate’. She was too gifted to play by their musical rules. She bends the rules and rewrites them, turning sound into feeling in effortless fashion.

"I feel like this song is up for interpretation and what someone is going through in life." Yes! You got it. Tori has said that she writes her songs with the guidance of the Muses. Like, the songs already exist and she's interpreting them through her own filter. Most of her songs are much more complex than this, actually. It's pretty straightforward comparatively. Tori doesn't usually explain meanings so that the songs can mean whatever they're meant to mean to whoever listens to them.

Oh, Tori Amos is a goddess, simply a goddess. The emotion, fierceness, and etherealness of her entire being is legend. This is a great rabbit hole!
Another incredible ethereal talent you may enjoy is Loreena McKennitt. The Mummer's Dance was her most popular piece, it was the theme song to the movie, Ever After. Other songs that are amazing: The Mystic's Dream, Night Ride Across the Caucasus, Skellig, The Old Ways, Bonny Portmore, Caravanserai, Lady of Shallott, Stolen Child, All Souls Night, The Bonny Swans... she does a lot of traditional (Irish/Scottish) songs, amazing instrumentation, incredible voice. She creates haunting worlds with her music.

I think it is a coming of age tale, but also a declaration of love between daughter and father, and a recognition of the hopes and dreams he put on a shelf for the sake of her. The white horses represent her hopes and dreams, still dormant in the little girl, but in the final chorus they have ”gone ahead”, and her father encourages her to start following them.

Britt, the first time I heard Tori Amos was from the Under the Pink Album which came out in the early 90's and I was sold. My favorite off that album is "Yes, Anastasia", "Pretty Good Year", "Past the Mission" "Bells for Her" She has an awesome catalog. Love the reaction it is spot on.

It is about rebellion...in a way. Her dad is a pastor and she grew up in the church and challenges her upbringing in many songs. 🙌🏼

So I've watched a dozen YT "reacts" videos for this song with the same emotional response and often tears. I'm old now, but lucky to have discovered Tori back in the 90's when I was in my 20's. Even though I usually defaulted to classic rock, techno, Beastie Boys, etc.. I couldn't ignore such immense musical talent and passion. I've seen her live 3 times - with the last time being a 1st date with a girl that I've now been married to for over 20 yrs.

Tori Amos was one of the first Christian artists too cross over and become popular in mainstream music. I had the honor of meeting her when she came into my store to shop. She is just as kind in person as she seems to be.👍♥️🤘

Love her music, a true artist and her dynamics are top notch. wish i had 1% of her ability let alone her control of said ability. One of those musicians that make you realise 30+ of playing an instrument might as well have been 300 years i'll never be that good. Ok got to the end and i'm still lmao to "Rebellious disney princess song" I think that might sum up Tori Amos very well.

This transition through life, the relationships we have, and having a father's love and support is absolutely enchanting.
Tori is in a cannon of her own. Makes sense that she's very good friends with Neil Gaiman, Maynard James Keenan, and Trent Reznor.

Tori was awarded a full classical music scholarship to Peabody at John Hopkins at the age of 5 for music she composed on the piano prior (to being 5 years old) they revoked her scholarship when she was 11 due to "Musical Differences". She didn't want to be locked into classical only music composing.

Tori is everything! I’m late to the party of your reactions but you got a new subscriber today. I bought toris first album little earthquakes when I was a sophomore in high school when it came out and it became the album of my teenage years. I was blessed to see her live 1996. The most mesmerizing and enchanting show ever. Please please dive deeper especially into this album. Watch her live in concert in Paris I believe. Tori was a child prodigy who entered the Peabody school of music around age 5 I believe for the piano. She was a concert pianist, writer, poet and more. I have heard it said many times that Tori has more breath control and length in her singing because of it than any other artist ever! And she floats her voice on top of the music and whatever makes sense to her. This was a great reaction! Please try little earthquakes, precious thing, me and a gun and more. 🫶🏻❤️❤️✌️🥹

Delicate and Fierce is the best way to describe Tori. My mother birthed me; Tori raised me. Seen her 13+ times…met her 10 of those times. She is…beautiful. Inside and out. Huge LGBTQIA+ and womens health and safety. She and Mick Foley started the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network. RAINN.
she is everything and more to me. i love watching your reaction.
And she, live, straddles the piano and also plays her synth - one hand on each. She is the absolute truth.
