  • In this video, Robert looks at the Starlight Xpress Oculus all-sky camera, looking in detail at what you get in the kit as well as demonstrating the included camera control software. Robert also ventures up a ladder to show you how to install the camera in a permanent rooftop location and operate it remotely.
    Since is launch the Oculus is a firm hit with astronomers wishing to record the sky conditions of their local or remote observatory site or record night-long meteor activity and other sky phenomena. Capable of producing beautiful and functional images of the whole sky, the Oculus is also suited for general weather observation and provide high-quality all-sky images for weather system and cloud formation (NB: an additional neutral density filter is required for daylight exposures and is not included).
    The Oculus camera is based around the 1.4 megapixels Sony SuperHAD CCD chip and is combined with a 2.5mm FL f1.2 super wide-angle lens to achieve 150 degrees coverage. (An optional 1.55mm FL f2 lens is available for 180-degree coverage but see our video for more details about lens choice and which is best for you).
    The SuperHAD chip which has all of the benefits of Sony's interline CCD technology, such as very low thermal noise and a fast non-mechanical electronic shutter. Featuring exceedingly low-noise electronics and fast pin-sharp optics, capturing the night sky is easy and reliable. The Oculus is USB powered and driven but does require a 12VDC input to power the built-in anti-dew heaters. The software supplied allows you to capture a series of exposures and quickly add them together to create a dramatic avi movie of the night sky. This is the perfect camera for imaging meteor showers, viewing the weather conditions at a remote observatory and imaging the night sky in a spectacular way.
    For more information on the Oculus and other Starlight Xpress products, please visit the Starlight Xpress website at www.sxccd.com/.

    Welcome back! Its fantastic to see A&N TV posting again, and with a traditional 30 min video packed full of information, and presented clearly, and in a structured way. Many "RUclipsrs" could take a leaf of your book. Great results from that camera! I'm impressed with how much detail it picked up.

    Something odd is happening at time stamp 25:44 and forward, the stars are rotating about the north star as they should be, but I see other lights that are moving relative to the the background stars or not in sync with them and seem to be rotating in the opposite direction about a point in the middle lower quadrant of the sky. I don't think these are satellites as a satellite would go from horizon to horizon and not be circling about a point in the sky. Would they be imperfections in the plastic dome? Nice video, I was thinking of purchasing one of these sky cameras until I seen the price, definitely out of my price range. Thanks very much for doing a video about them, very well done ia as normal for your videos!

    I bought the Oculus all-sky camera 180°. I installed the camera and downloaded the operating software. By clicking on the camera control button I don't see Start and ends control with the selection of stop down and start at this time. It would be very convenient for me to have it there. What should I do?

    Just purchased the Oculus pro all sky camera and I'm looking for someone to assist me in setting it up. I need help with the camera settings on the Oculus image processing program? 24:41

    • @user-vm8zd9nf9i
      @user-vm8zd9nf9i Год назад

      I just picked one up last week and have had nothing but troubles with it. The software constantly crashes, the software says the camera isn't supported but does recognize it, I have a request for help from Starlight Xpress, they told me to change a setting, my 2013 software does not have that setting. I asked for the newer software and they kinda changed the subject to just hit this button, it will be "ok", well it was, and still is not, ok. I have tried to install it and get the software to recognize on a Win10 PC and a Win10 laptop. Nope. I am so frustrated. I am now trying to get it installed on a Win98 laptop, no matter how many times I try, I cannot get the proper drivers to load, under system devices, I see the yellow ! next to the device.
      Starting the software, when I select a change, EXCEPT for the initial setting up of the directory, (creating the .inf file) none of the changes are saved. If I try to change that initial saved directory to something different, it doesn't save, I have to delete the originally created directory and reinstall the program. BUT, when i start the program up with that new directory, it will not save the .inf file. :( I understand that video states it a specific camera for a specific device, and my serial number is OCP 063 so I have bought the 63rd one made in 10 years?) I can see that there is not a lot of development support. I am just about ready to return my Oculus Pro for a refund.

      Update, I finally got it working. Thank you to Terry from Starlight-Xpress for helping me out. I have not had the time to play with the Oculus program in depth and it is a steep learning curve for a novice like me. I did buy a raspberry Pi and built my own with parts from AllskyOptics. Their suggested (FOV 1/2” 1.55mm f2 CS lens and ZWO ASI224MC) color camera gives better results and there is a bigger following on their forum to help with setup and settings. The web based server running on the Pi is a plus and powering the components via POE is a requirement for me as I am going to install it atop a 35' ROHN tower. I am currently working on keeping that one cool based off of the Oculus hardware setup and will continue to play with it in my spare time.

      There are relatively low- cost PCs (e,g,, ACE PC) that can run the Oculus and other devices (e.g., Unihedron SQM meter, CMOS cameras to monitor a scope & mount).

    I think that you had the 'O' ring in the wrong place, don't think it will seal where you placed it 9:30 in the video. It needs to be under the dome to create a seal, you may get a moisture issue

    • @RocketPlanet
      @RocketPlanet  3 года назад +2

      Hi Simon, yes I know - I thought the same thing at first, but I checked - taking the last resort of a scoundrel - and read the manual, and sure enough the o ring sits in the top position between the lock ring and the dome. Here is the passage from the product manual that explains the reason for this (I should add the reminder that the Oculus has an 'always on' built-in heater). >>>>>The Oculus dome is spaced off from the base ring by small pads. This allows air to circulate through the vent holes and inside of the dome, to reduce the tendency for dew to condense on the inner surface. Please ensure that these pads remain in place when removing the dome for cleaning.
