Howard, BMW are currently selling a £73k 640d M Sport, 17 plate with 3000’ish miles, for less than £40k... 😳. Should I cast off my Land Rover Discovery Sport and buy it? 🤔🤷🏻♂️. Cracking review though, thanks.
You will pay £500 odd for road tax on the 640d though. And you will be low down. And the steering is quite firm, but ......that seems like a unusual deal worth checking validity of at 2015 with 30k miles is retailing at 27k - so you will still stand to loose over 10k per year on it, even though it seems cheap. I'd buy a 16 or 15 for £28.
I picked up a 67 plate with 4000 miles with list of £73k for £39k in March. I have to say its a fantastic machine. I traded in a Jag. The tech in the BMW is years ahead of JAG and much faster. I did change the runflats for Conti 6's and the ride improvement makes its a better car. You do sit low but once you've got used to that you realise you're in a special machine. The diesel even makes a pleasing growl when you floor it. Mine doesn't have the adaptive suspension which I suspect would improve the ride even more. It looks great, drives great - whats not to like at £39k.
HR in a Car I wouldn't say it was noticeably quieter on a smooth road, certainly not noisier. Where you notice it is over the bumps the low profile runflats are brittle over the bumps and there is no give in the tyre wall. So it is louder and harsher. I understand BMW have given up insisting on fitting them as standard. About time too given all the feedback. I also lost one runflat to a pothole in the first week. I suspect they are more susceptible to wall damage. They have a plastic liner in the wall that if you break it the wall will swell. Hope that helps.
David Wells ok sure but the jaguar 16 onwards has slightly more acceptable nav and that meridian is a selling point for me and the£800 extended warranty is cheap after the two years. I am also looking at gc but had about 3 now so maybe i am over it. Defo did not like the 650 whatsoever
HR in a Car I had a 3.0d XJ Portfolio. What converted me back to BMW was a guy I know who had a new 2017 Range Rover Autobiography with the new JLR entertainment/office interface. He had lots of trouble connecting his phone and the screen kept crashing. I looked on line and this is not unusual. The Idrive has been evolving and improving. The connectivity is impressive and still way ahead of the new JLR system in my view.
David Wells that is my concern - there is an update but if his was a 17 it may be before the 17 update. Yeh researching for a F pace film i also found those horror stories and they are still going back in now. It would be a major issue for it to keep going in.
Did you get a generic map or have it done properly,I’d like to know if it improved mpg’s too,is the long motorway journey 50 mpg achievable in real life?
66Pipes66 well i got someone to do it. I always get 45mpg no matter what. Really opens up the engine. Best £200 i spent. But i would recommend going to a good place to get it done. So they can change the bhp on your sports dials. If u put it on eco mode and drive like a granny u can acheive 50mpg.
When it comes to reviewing cars Richie is no Paddy McGinness....... and that is a good thing! 😎 What’s the best leather option in these as modern “BMW leather” feels like its from a plastic bottle bank?
lol @ the parking criteria - i'm the same....dirty car - nope, scraped up car - nope, near trolley bay or a trolley - nope, kids seats in the back - nope......supermarkets are the worse place to park a car, doors smashing into yours, trolleys flying into it and then there's the disgruntled people who will just key a nice looking car ....i now mainly shop at Sainsburys or M&S, and if i have to pop into my local Asda the car is parked a long way from anything.......hmm i think i have become a car snob!
One of the best looking BM's right now. It's one of the few four door cars that could tempt me out of my 4 series coupe. HR where was that pub in the video 5.27? thanks
Just seen this highly informative video. HR, you are the man! I've just sold my 2013 Jaguar XJL and looking for a replacement. This is somewhat at the top of my shortlist.......
The seat in the XJ has no lateral support! I sold my 911 last year and looking for one car to be both a 911 and an XJ!! The Gran Coupe seems to fit the bill - you made it look so in this video. I am smitten :-)
I'm desperately clinging onto what's left of my youth - I think a 7 series will tip me over the brink! I was thinking either an Audi or a Tesla, but you may be right.. another 640!
The problem with BMW is that with Merc and Audi they are the most common sight on the road . A Panamara is seen as a class above and used car values suggest this . I'm happy about this because when it falls to 12 -15 grand that's when I'll get mine
I have one. It doesn't, however, sit in its own niche. Of course they drive and feel differently, but it's competitive set is the A7 and CLS - the other cars I considered.
Neither A7 or CLS have those torque BHP and consumption numbers, or the Nav and connected drive - hence I guess why you bought one. Also the 6 price is arguably higher than both A7 and CLS like for like engines.
I will take your nonsense and raise you a poppycock - The 640d has 630nm of torque - much better nav, year for year than the CLS and the wallowy slow Audi - Yes agreeably the A7 and CLS are the competitors for sure - my point was that you cannot buy a lesser 640d but you can an A7 and the same goes for a CLS. The 640d is a car that starts with a 3.0 313bhp engine and thus it sits in its own niche for that reason, it is the only type of car of its kind that starts attracting that clientelle. Had the A7 been only available in twin turbo or nothing, then the 640d would not be alone. Similarly the CLS has been down tuned and has much less torque and much less power. The 640d is a rare, hard to sell ,not in very much demand, super devaluing super cruiser and that is one reason why it sits in its own niche.
HR in a Car My mistake. That A7 actually has 479 ft/lbs, not NM. It therefore has 650 NM. Your point of difference, in putting the BMW in a niche all of its own, appears to be that you prefer its satnav.
I *almost* bought a 2016 640D Coupé M sport tonight, went to the garage to pick one up but....the size really, really put me off for commuting, parking etc...maybe some people could live with the size but I just couldn’t do it :(

David Wells that is my concern - there is an update but if his was a 17 it may be before the 17 update. Yeh researching for a F pace film i also found those horror stories and they are still going back in now. It would be a major issue for it to keep going in.
Excellent video, great editing. You've earned a subscriber :)
Haha thumbs up for the parking at 1:50 Nice review!
best video review of a BMW ever :)
I absolutely love my 650i
How's the engine holding up? Going for the Diesel since i heard so many reliability issues with the engines in the 550i/650i cars
Cracking review , keep up the good work mate!
its indeed a good piece of technology, your reviews are very entertaining
very nice review HR..pls review more
fantastic review, I hear Top Gear are interviewing!
You. Silly.
I think you've got a great shout for it mate, get your agent involved!
I have the exactly same, same colour too. One hell of a car. Even better after a remap the car feels even smoother.
Just discovered your videos and safe to say I subscribed immediately. All the best, you should be on TV
Cheers Major glad to meet you dude - welcome to the club.
When it comes to reviewing cars Richie is no Paddy McGinness....... and that is a good thing! 😎
What’s the best leather option in these as modern “BMW leather” feels like its from a plastic bottle bank?
lol
Fantastic video :) now you made me want one…
convincing...
We got one great car
lol @ the parking criteria - i'm the same....dirty car - nope, scraped up car - nope, near trolley bay or a trolley - nope, kids seats in the back - nope......supermarkets are the worse place to park a car, doors smashing into yours, trolleys flying into it and then there's the disgruntled people who will just key a nice looking car ....i now mainly shop at Sainsburys or M&S, and if i have to pop into my local Asda the car is parked a long way from anything.......hmm i think i have become a car snob!
Aldi for me.
I do the same, Blower!
Just bought one today. Hope I made the right choice! From what you say I did.
OOOO how exciting :)
One of the best looking BM's right now. It's one of the few four door cars that could tempt me out of my 4 series coupe. HR where was that pub in the video 5.27? thanks
Erm its a hotel bud, White Swan, bibury maybe?
Thanks for that.
Cheers for lookin.
The reasons you mentioned are the exact reason why I brought one of these. 👍🏻
I'm in the market for one as we speak
Yeah!!!! it's an amazing review, But does anyone have any idea which song is played in the video????
please tell if anyone knows.....
Which one brother
Fantastic review! Don’t subscribe to many but have to this awesome channel!
Fantastic review cant wait to get mine picking a 2016 m sport + up next week
Picking up my 2015 640d m sport next week too! Good luck with yours...
@@hughiemg2 best of luck with yours also
Just seen this highly informative video. HR, you are the man! I've just sold my 2013 Jaguar XJL and looking for a replacement. This is somewhat at the top of my shortlist.......
MaxGTI you wont like the seat after xj but worth a look
The seat in the XJ has no lateral support! I sold my 911 last year and looking for one car to be both a 911 and an XJ!! The Gran Coupe seems to fit the bill - you made it look so in this video. I am smitten :-)
Great video.. I have this car and I love it. The question is though, what do I get next (in 2 years).. Any ideas?
after 640d? Hm another one? New 7 will be lower price then...
I'm desperately clinging onto what's left of my youth - I think a 7 series will tip me over the brink!
I was thinking either an Audi or a Tesla, but you may be right.. another 640!
Tesla need to work on their looks, Audi new range nice if they fix the nav. 7 is super cool with the lights inside man. Properly Lord.
Easily BMWs best looking car for decades.
The problem with BMW is that with Merc and Audi they are the most common sight on the road .
A Panamara is seen as a class above and used car values suggest this .
I'm happy about this
because when it falls to 12 -15 grand that's when I'll get mine
Bloody ugly
HR in a Car Nonsense. The A7 BiTDi is 316 BHP and 479 NM. I don't know which models you think don't have nav?!
Your point of difference, in putting the BMW in a niche all of its own, appears to be that you prefer its satnav.
hahaha Yep.
It's great, engine is reliable and fast. Good review.
Great vid mate ... Now I want a GC even more.. 🏃.. off to swap my 5
Awesome review
IF THERE WAS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION AVAILABLE.....
Howard is great, and yes he should be on Top Gear or Fifth Gear
Hahaha this guy is funny. He brought a measurement of garages.... I'm dead
Your music choices for the video is Grade A
GY thanks mate
Panamera's diesel is slower fyi. Audi A7 is mostly a good competitor. 3.0 bitdi quattro diesel
never made a triple turbo only twin
Good video but not as good as you one on the E92 but I am biased as I have an E92 😅
Is it reliable?!
Yes mate. No issues in general. Plus BMW are the world's best at looking after customers who service and buy with them!
You honestly should be on top gear
Well that is very nice of you to say mate.
Best review of my car :)
Very, very nice video/review 👍😎
I *almost* bought a 2016 640D Coupé M sport tonight, went to the garage to pick one up but....the size really, really put me off for commuting, parking etc...maybe some people could live with the size but I just couldn’t do it :(
Go buy a Mini then!
Or a trabant
@@johnroberts9845 Buy them both! I'm going to keep my mcs when I buy one of these 6's. It'll be the perfect combo!
