As a Spaniard, what is your overall opinion of the Civil War, its lasting effects on the citizens and culture, and have you noticed any similarities in modern Spain? Were there any glaring mistakes or important information missing from the video that stuck out to you? What is the overall public sentiment on Franco, his defense of Christian traditionalism, and the resulting authoritarian government? Is he a national hero or disgrace, and does that opinion vary widely based on Catholic identity? It seems as though most Western historians purposely overemphasize his label of fascist and relationship with the Axis powers whenever he’s mentioned, regardless of whether it’s even relevant. I’m always surprised at how quickly the failed socialist ideology can continuously reinvent and reemerge within European political discourse and shockingly gain support from those who aren’t even two generations removed from its horrifically destructive implementation. In the US, it’s beginning to look as though political violence, based on the ever-widening ideological divide, is an unfortunate inevitability and seemingly by design. Our constitutional republican form of governance, based upon the principles of liberal individualism, is the optimal breeding ground for the kinds of ideologies present in the Second Spanish Republic. Once moral decay and solipsistic degeneracy takes root in a society, there always appears to be an emotionally subversive force beckoning to go further down that chaotic path and if God willing, there’s an opposing force attempting to reestablish societal order through the implementation of traditional values and objective morality. My hope is that naive Americans, those still stuck in the Democrat versus Republican paradigm, will soon open their eyes to the dichotomy propaganda and finally realize that the uniparty are writing “soap opera-esque” scripted narratives to maintain their grip on power. Even though the next logical step is to examine which well-funded and highly motivated cabal is truly at the reins of that power, but for most Americans, that’s too much of a psyche-shattering request for them to even attempt confronting. I’m totally rambling and ranting but thanks in advance for any response, large or small.
That's what is great about this channel. It covers what we never learned in school. Among other things, I was taught in school that young George Washington chopped down a cherry tree. When asked about it, he (allegedly) said "It was I. I cannot tell a lie". That story is a lie, and the blatant hypocrisy is not lost on me. I can't thank you enough for this video. My grandparents lived during the civil war, and had to endure the terror inflicted by the republicans in Barcelona. My grandparents were deeply religious, like most of the decent people in Spain by that time, and had to hide a few priests at home from the anarchists who were out looking to kill the clergy. It was hard, food was very scarce, being rationed, but they shared it with the different priests that came and went, hiding from the atrocities. What hurts me the most is seeing how history is taught today in schools, books, and TV, where Franco was the bad guy, and the republicans were the "freedom fighters". They were monsters.
So were Nationalists though, the white terror killed more people than the republicans ever did. It also left a lot of children as orphans-- is it not sensible to recognise that both sides were extremely radicalised eg. tit for tat killings? Schools don't paint republicans as freedom fighters, they had their issues like ineffective collectives, burning of churches, which were definitely wrong. But they were in a sense more justified since Spain had always been under oppressive, monarchist rule (where religion was ingrained into the government). The nationalists only comprised of elites trying to keep their power.

The socialists didn't do that for humanitarian reasons, nor as an expression of their existential hatred of Catholicism. They simply did it because so many of the foreign socialists were ethnically Jewish (although not actively so, and definitely not religiously). To a large extent the socialist Republic was an effort to impose foreign ideas on Spanish society, and they didn't want to give any of their foreign advisors the idea they weren't welcome.
My husband and I visited Montserrat monastery in Spain a few years ago. They said that during the Spanish Civil War, the Republicans persecuted the clergy at the monastery. When Franco won, the defeated leftists were granted sanctuary in the monastery and Franco respected it.
I'm an american but was stationed in Southern Spain while in the Navy. I always loved history and would often ask people about their opinion on franco (when I was comfortable with that person and they were to me, you dont talk about him in public even if you like him). My impression was 70% like and appreciated what he did for spain, but they were typically older. The younger generation are the ones who despise him. But just like in America, young generations often forget the lessons learned from the past. Thats why its still somehow hip/cool to like socialism/communism despite countless examples of why they're bad. You can literally have people from former soviet states or china tell you how bad it was/is and you'll still get young far left americans telling them they're wrong lol.
It sickens me that they basically say to Eastern Europeans that lived during the Soviet bloc that their history, their pain, and their suffering doesn’t matter all in the name for their delusion on Marxist civilization.

It’s one of the many reasons why I don’t trust any “modern” history writer on the Spanish Civil War unless they’re willing to give Franco a fair shake rather than succumbing to their emotional, cultural Marxist driven ideological hysteria. Since most aren’t honest enough to do this it can make finding the truth they’ve hidden and willfully ignore somewhat difficult to track down but when you find it it’s all the more rewarding because of the effort it took to unearth it and the satisfaction you feel from finding it in spite of their petty attempts as the system’s gatekeepers to keep it from you.
The biggest lie is that history is written by the victors. Nope, its written by the survivors. The Spanish Civil War was one of the few wars where the losers wrote the history. I have long wanted to dig into this but I’m sure objective books are rare. Maybe I won’t have to after watching!

And today, anyone who even questions the Civil Rights Act is labeled a “Confederate Supporter.” Even idiotic Republicans play into it too by trying to say “the Democrats are the real racists,” because of the Southern Democrats. It’s actually very similar to how the Nazis are seen as the metaphor for all evil in the accepted narrative. Now I’m not a Southerner and I don’t support Southern independence but the way the Confederacy or the Civil War in general is portrayed is definitely not in a fair analysis or one that favors the South.
Every American needs to know the history of the Spanish civil war. We are living through these exact times. The two tiered justice system is Spain at that time before Franco is just two similar to today in America. The video guy makes the same arguments whig historians made against Irving in the 70s live on TV which they couldn't respond to Irving's retorts. Off topic but please do a video on Leon Degrelle & SS Wallonien (French speaking Belgians). Without a doubt Leon Degrelle did the most to say the truth after the war. He never backed down until the mid 1990s when he passed. A true son of Europe. SS Wallonien also received Iron Cross awards in mass for helping 75,000 SS men escape russian encirclement in Ukraine. Living here in Spain the politics of the civil war are still very much at play. If anyone keeps an eye on Spanish modern politics they will know all about the recent and ongoing 'amnistía' situation. You will see Communist and Falange graffiti and flags hanging from windows with political slogans written on them. Some towns still have Falange marches. And Spain is the only country in the EU with politicians/ministers who are openly members of a Communist party. And of course, there are still so-called Anarchists living in the squat-slums of Cataluña. People here still know the real history because it's still so relevant and within a generation since the end of the Franco era, but the amount of biased writings of read on the civil war from so-called historians is ridiculous. They will go to great lengths to cover up and deflect from the Communist/Soviet aspects of the conflict. So well done, sir, for putting the effort into creating this film.

This is Reprehensible. I didn't know that and that's sad. Franco wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but that's a hundred steps too far. He did what had to be done, though he could have handled a few things differently. Personally, if I could do so in the Afterlife, I'd like to sit down with him and hear his side of the story. Something catholic civilians did during this period, specially on more contested regions, was helping local churches and monasteries hide their relics and other religious iconographic. This was seen as a very noble endeavour by the catholics, and obviously unforgivable by the left, who would execute anyone doing this without a second thought. My grandma and her family would take place in such activities, as they were profoundly religious. After the war ended, the local priests in my town would gift some of these relics to the people that helped, and we still conserve the one that my grandma kept: a mastercrafted and perfectly painted small wooden statue of baby Jesus with a halo made of gold. Sadly, this clandestine operation also left my grandma mentally scarred, and she would forever fear the countryside after dusk, as that was where the left would lead their victims to execution. Rest in peace, grandma. I shall never forget you.

This move seemed to negate all the accomplishments of the nationalist groups. Even though Franco marginalized the Carlists and co-opted the Falangists, his failure to save or intentionally allow the execution of José Antonio Primo de Rivera was a missed opportunity to create a more stable future for the state.

My grandparents were deeply religious, like most of the decent people in Spain by that time, and had to hide a few priests at home from the anarchists who were out looking to kill the clergy. It was hard, food was very scarce, being rationed, but they shared it with the different priests that came and went, hiding from the atrocities. What hurts me the most is seeing how history is taught today in schools, books, and TV, where Franco was the bad guy, and the republicans were the "freedom fighters". They were monsters.

It also left a lot of children as orphans-- is it not sensible to recognise that both sides were extremely radicalised eg. tit for tat killings? Schools don't paint republicans as freedom fighters, they had their issues like ineffective collectives, burning of churches, which were definitely wrong. But they were in a sense more justified since Spain had always been under oppressive, monarchist rule (where religion was ingrained into the government). The nationalists only comprised of elites trying to keep their power.

I'm an american but was stationed in Southern Spain while in the Navy. I always loved history and would often ask people about their opinion on franco (when I was comfortable with that person and they were to me, you dont talk about him in public even if you like him).
My impression was 70% like and appreciated what he did for spain, but they were typically older. The younger generation are the ones who despise him. But just like in America, young generations often forget the lessons learned from the past. Thats why its still somehow hip/cool to like socialism/communism despite countless examples of why they're bad.
You can literally have people from former soviet states or china tell you how bad it was/is and you'll still get young far left americans telling them they're wrong lol.

It’s one of the many reasons why I don’t trust any “modern” history writer on the Spanish Civil War unless they’re willing to give Franco a fair shake rather than succumbing to their emotional, cultural Marxist driven ideological hysteria. This is not all true, at least in the North and urban centers. We were taught in public education that the South was these unrepentant irredeemable evil racists. And today, anyone who even questions the Civil Rights Act is labeled a “Confederate Supporter.” Even idiotic Republicans play into it too by trying to say “the Democrats are the real racists,” because of the Southern Democrats. It’s actually very similar to how the Nazis are seen as the metaphor for all evil in the accepted narrative. Now I’m not a Southerner and I don’t support Southern independence but the way the Confederacy or the Civil War in general is portrayed is definitely not in a fair analysis or one that favors the South.

Living here in Spain the politics of the civil war are still very much at play. If anyone keeps an eye on Spanish modern politics they will know all about the recent and ongoing 'amnistía' situation. You will see Communist and Falange graffiti and flags hanging from windows with political slogans written on them. Some towns still have Falange marches. And Spain is the only country in the EU with politicians/ministers who are openly members of a Communist party.
And of course, there are still so-called Anarchists living in the squat-slums of Cataluña.
People here still know the real history because it's still so relevant and within a generation since the end of the Franco era, but the amount of biased writings of read on the civil war from so-called historians is ridiculous. They will go to great lengths to cover up and deflect from the Communist/Soviet aspects of the conflict. So well done, sir, for putting the effort into creating this film.

Something catholic civilians did during this period, specially on more contested regions, was helping local churches and monasteries hide their relics and other religious iconographic. This was seen as a very noble endeavour by the catholics, and obviously unforgivable by the left, who would execute anyone doing this without a second thought.
My grandma and her family would take place in such activities, as they were profoundly religious. After the war ended, the local priests in my town would gift some of these relics to the people that helped, and we still conserve the one that my grandma kept: a mastercrafted and perfectly painted small wooden statue of baby Jesus with a halo made of gold.
Sadly, this clandestine operation also left my grandma mentally scarred, and she would forever fear the countryside after dusk, as that was where the left would lead their victims to execution.
Rest in peace, grandma. I shall never forget you.

This move seemed to negate all the accomplishments of the nationalist groups. Even though Franco marginalized the Carlists and co-opted the Falangists, his failure to save or intentionally allow the execution of José Antonio Primo de Rivera was a missed opportunity to create a more stable future for the state.

As a Portuguese myself I'd love to see your take on that. One good book on that subject I would recommend is *The Fabric of Terror* by Bernardo Teixeira, which is basically an account of the start of the war from the opposite perspective of the mainstream official narrative.
