As a Brit, Spain and Portugal have always been the most interesting countries on mainland Europe to me. Their history and culture is so unique and they've always seemed to be doing their own thing, separate from the rest of Europe.
And especially from each other. Dont want nothing to do with Spaniards at all.
@@antoniovarela4444 Hola
Brits and Spanish did have more points in common when we start looking deeper in history... Sadly, when you decided to cut ties with Rome the relations really went south maybe too much and even out of proportion at times... Hope we can get along better and reconcile some historical issues. As for England/Britain place in european culture we tend to think that, just as her iconic climate conditions, it is kind of a mysterious land of seclusion and mist... also doing her own thing. The fact that you travel the world out of that "secrecy" is also an oddity of history (I guess that is your norman/viking component playing out)

My first response to you was a lot less cordial than this one. The RUclips algorithm wouldn't allow it to stay posted so as not to upset the delicate sensibilities of those such yourself, I guess. So, let me just say this. I'm Portuguese and proud of my people's history and also, by extension, the history of our Spaniard brothers. We didn't do anything that others didn't and/or wouldn't have done given the opportunity. But I very much doubt you go around telling Muslims/Arabs, for example, they should be ashamed of their people having engaged in things like conquest. That being said, go fuck yourself. The Spanish Empire was not a colonial empire such as the English, French or Dutch, but on the contrary, it was the last empire of the ancient type, closer to what Rome or Greece were. 300-400 years of domain based on miscegenation, alphabetization and conversion of different peoples; construction of universities, cathedrals and cities worldwide; a huge cultural and artistic explotion; deliberation of new phylisophic, teologic and juridic debates in human history (like f.e., if all humans were equal); discoverments that changed the conception of the world; opening of new shipping routes; creation of an undefeated infantry for 2 centuries; expansion of the Hispanic culture throughout the Atlantic and Pacific ocean (called "the spanish lake" at that time) as Rome did throughout the Mediterranean... All of this, in a world as big as the one we know today, but using a technology from 5 centuries ago.
From there onward, european empires had a colonial model based on mercantilism, slavery, and large-scale production, creating factories or plantations in overseas possessions, instead of a civilizing reproduction of their society. The former were a global market, the latter a global kingdom. European empires shouldnt be generalized by the fact of having overseas territories, because not all of them were the same.
Bruh shut up, we don't want no whitewashing hispanistas in this channel. It's legit one of the few history channels with no tunnel vision of history and which tries to get both sides on.
While you couch it in cozy language and are whitewashing the hell out of this, you have a point; Spanish colonialism different from Portuguese, English or French colonialism in some ways. That being said Japan tried to do the exact same thing to the various peoples of the far east during its imperial age, and we had to invent the most destructive weapon ever manufactured to stop them. Regardless of how gently or zealously you r*pe a nation, or regardless of the tools employed to supplant their culture, your still r*ping it.

Yes, some people are even calling it Catalano-Aragonese Crown these days. Can you believe it?
@@REM-gd5zg As a historiographic concept it is nearly as good as Crown of Aragon. I prefer the last term, as the first title of the sovereign of those lands was "king of Aragon". The concept you cited is not so used anymore, as it was a reaction to the pseudohistoric belief that the Kingdom of Aragon possessed other states or principalities like Valencia, Catalonia, Mallorca, etc.
@@francescc5272 I was under the impresión that then term I pointed out, was merely a nationalistic political construct. My mistake then... how naive of me...........
@@REM-gd5zg There was also a nationalistic intention behind it, that's a reason why I prefer "crown of Aragon". But as I said, it is still correct, as the entity had no proper name and it describes well the two main entities it contained.

Well it's because Spain went out of the Radar in the 18th, 19th and early 20th century. The reason that Spain is not considered historically is thanks to the Black Legend, a political and psychological weapon that was used by Spain's northern European rivals in order to demonize the Spanish Empire, its people and culture, minimize Spanish discoveries and achievements, and counteract its influence and power in world affairs. - Before the Iberians, between the 12th century and the 5th century BC, on the south coast of the Iberian Peninsula, at the mouth of the Guadalquivir river existed a Civilization called Tartessos, who where influenced by the Phoenicians and later by the Greek who were stablished in the Eastern Coast of the peninsula.

Very comprehensive and easy to follow.
Also a great story.
Man oh man… the work that goes into these. No fluff either-all business with just a few clever one liners. Thanks a lot!
My Spanish ancestors were from Asturias. Looking to learn of the long history before I visit.
I think you may be the best history channel on RUclips. Not only do you know what details to give, but you also know how to qualify all of it.
Please keep up the great work :)

Some humble suggestions. I'd love to see the history of Portugal, Serbia, Romania, The Vatican, Mexico, India, Thailand, Frisia, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Austria, Hungary, Poland... Keep up the great work!
Countries in southern Asia like India and Thailand are very cool, and I would want to learn more about their history.
Your choice of paintings and photos is excellent. If I could only give one piece of feedback: it would be amazing if you could also subtitle the paintings and photos, so we can better understand what we are looking at within the context of your video. I noticed that you credited the photos in the description, though.
Thank you for the immense work you put into creating these videos!
Increible. Un magnifico trabajo . Lo utilizo para mejorar mi inglés y mi conocimiento sobre la historia de mi país mientras entreno.
Incredible. Really a magnificent job. I'm using it to improve my level of English and at the same time learning more about the history of my own country while i'm working out.
Muchas Gracias. Thanks very much
Awesome----Spain for the win!🇪🇸
I'm excited to watch the story of my ancestors. I'm Mexican American descended from every line of Spanish royalty before 1400s until Enrique II. Such a neat experience to dig through my family tree as you mention someone in it. Thank you for making this!
Fantastic! Thank you for sharing.
Can’t wait for part two bro good job and thank you
