I fix iMacs professionally for a living. Some key points missing from this video. Once you've installed logic/system board & PSU board do a POWER TEST and make sure you get at least two of the board LED's lit with fan spin, before you even think about putting the LCD panel on! It is possible to get the CPU mis-aligned or wrongly torqued in its socket and the iMac will not power on. Make sure all the housing edges where the adhesive tapes are mounted are clean to ensure proper adhesion of the new ones you will install. Install ALL the adhesive tape strips on the housing, you don't need to install any on the LCD panel. Don't remove the plastic top layer of the adhesive strips yet, until you done a power test with the LCD attached. Attach Backlight and eDP video cables between logic/system board and LCD panel. Boot up and do a full test, ideally with diag software such as Techtools. Once you happy everything is connected and working, power off remove the LCD, disconnecting the back light and eDP video cable and ready the adhesive strips, removing the plastic layer exposing all adhesive layer of the strips. Carefully align the LCD from the bottom, resting it on the lip and ensure both corners are aligned correctly. I personally use my chest to rest the LCD panel on and connect the eDP video connector and backlight cables. Once your sure these are connected right (clamp is engaged on the eDP video cable on both ends with a very subtle click), plug in power cord and power up to make sure you have a video display before you close and seal up the LCD against the housing! Gently run fingers against all the edges where the adhesive strips reside underneath applying a small amount of pressure to seal it up and make a good bond - VOILA!
@@danarozTo be honest, if you do alot of CPU upgrades/swaps then buy in large syringes. Arctic MX-4 is good ;-)
Guys you're the best! It is the most accurate video for properly disassembling iMacs! Only a little remark from me, it's good to press the PowerOn button after unplugging the power cord, to discharge the capacitors (to avoid power shock or damage). Cheers! :)
Hello, interesting video thank you, I did the same thing as you but alas I don't have the same result... I have a black screen, what do I need to check to make sure I have the right CPU compatibility on the motherboard? Thank you and keep going. regards
Do you know if this can be done with the latest 1,799$ base 2019 model? I assume it would have to be 8th gen and not 9th gen since it's what they sell in them.
You guys did a great step-by-step video! We just did the same upgrade to a late 2015 imac.. upgraded from an i5 to an i7 6700K. We expected it to run hotter, and in monitoring the CPU temperatures, it can easily run into 80 and 90's C. Were you monitoring any of your CPU core temperatures to compare a before and after upgrade? Also the GPU temps? I have to admit, I'm wondering if upgrading to an i7 that can run quite a bit hotter, if it would affect the longevity of the entire imac, especially if you run cpu/gpu intensive apps a lot.
One other thing be very carefully handling the PSU board, unlike the chap in this video! I'm surprised he never got a static electric shock (up-to 450V DC) from very two large electrolytic capacitors just above centre of the PSU board. I find it easier to plug in the 3 pin connector at the bottom of the PSU (that goes to the mains socket at the back of the iMac ) first before fitting the rectangular DC plug going into the system/logic board.
I bought a still-sealed unused 27" 2017 Imac off eBay for $961, and upgraded it with the following. If you can afford it, I would use the Samsung 970 EVO Plus. I installed the 2TB version, and im getting read & writes 3,200+ mb per second. Bare in mind, you need to upgrade its firmware: you can do this using Samsung Magician on Windows, OR, create a bootable Usb drive and update the ssd in select-start-disk mode on the Mac (read more how to on www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/cqjjlw/mid_2015_15_mbp_ssd_upgrade_samsung_970_evo_plus/ ) I also upgraded my CPU to the 4.2 i7-7700k, and then maxed 64gb Ram. If you got the 27" iMac with either Fusion or HDD it comes with the SATA cable, and then I would suggest to add a ssd there too, in place of the HDD. I got the 2.5" 1TB Samsung 860 Evo SATA, which I can use as extra 'external' storage (though it is safely installed within the iMac, so you don't need the dongles or external storage enclosures)

i swear if Apple stopped being so pretentious we could actually get highly powerful Macs at Affordable prices they wouldnt even have to compromise an allow upgrades they can still keep the design but just sell better up to date parts at cheaper values comparable to a Pc and im a Mac user theyd still sell because of the OS no reason they should still be stuck in 2015 when PC is lightyears ahead in performance
You did create more problems than you tried to fix. Thermal paste is not enough for the ram modules of the GPU....there is a gap. You should use Thermal pads instead...1mm to 1.5mm. This iMac now has serious GPU Thermal issues.
