Thank you so much for this video. I did exactly what you did and my 2019 iMac is screaming fast. I created an external drive with a bootable copy of Mac OS Catalina on it, booted from that and installed Catalina on the NVMe drive from there. Worked like a charm.

DUDE, You just saved me $20. I have been looking for some information you just provided. I'm going to soup up my 2019 27" too. Mine never shipped with a sata drive but while I was in there I wanted to add large sata ssd as well. All of the other tear downs I could find had sata drives preinstalled. I didnt know if mine had the sata drive mounting brackets. I was about to order them until I found this video showing that the brackets are there. Thanks.

Thanks for this. On the product page for the adapters, it says: 'can't support recovering from internet, important to prepare bootable USB disk driver'. Is that what you did in order to boot up at the end of your video? If currently running Ventura on a 2017 27-inch 5K iMac, what's the best way to get Ventura and all the data from the old fusion drive onto the new installation? Thanks again!

Nice video. I don't know why apple could not have included space for the M.2 next to the memory on the back, or made the front bezel come off and have memory, HDD and SSD there. They seem to have no idea about design other than pretty.

    Hello,
I also have an iMac 19,1 with 1TB fusion drive (1TB HDD plus ssd blade I think is 24GB)
I want to replace the SSD blade with a SSD and "destroy" the fusion drive.
I want to keep the 1TB HDD for files and new SSD, possibly also 1TB, in the M.2 blade, without fusion drive.
Do I have to do something when installing the operative system so it doesn't try to build a fusion drive again?
Can I keep the other operative system in the HDD, if I need to boot to get something there, or when I rip the SSD of the fusion will I loose the data?
I would want it just temporarily, just in case I need.
In the future I would also wipe the HDD.
I don't understand why you chose one adapter over the other.
    It is just mechanical decision?
Would you recomend to buy the two also and see for my self when assembling, or you think it will be the same as yours, and so the chosen adapter would be the same, the smaller one?
It seems the OWC solution is more expensive than this one, and this way I can use this SSD for other computers in the future.
Thank you for your amazing video, it touches the problems I would want to see solved (adapter and proprietary connector).
EDIT: Why this SSD/model? are there any compatibility issues? Why did you chose this one?

Nice job. Very smooth! Was wondering, if a dual bay carrier with two NVMe M.2 SSDs (with 2TB each!) could be put in the place of where the Fusion Drive would have been, in order to have a secondary and third internal drive, and then RAID 0 them both into a 4TB RAID DRIVE.. in addition to having your 2TB SSD boot drive. That would really be a killer machine! I wonder what the new 2020 iMac will look like... with their new 3733MHz Rams and 10th gen Chips. And what would be great would be a modular Mac Pro mini... ;-)

That would be amazing lol but with the m.2 SSD's in the fusion bay area you could only connect via SATA cable which would limit your overall speed. so might as well just use two regular SSD's there. I have a 27" iMac 2017, You can install an Internal SATA SSD and connect to the motherboard if you want, No fancy OWC cable needed. You just can't set up a fusion drive with the NVME, To set up a fusion drive you need the NVME and a "spinning hard drive", I tried the NVME and SATA SSD combination and it just did not work as a fusion drive. You can have both drives in your computer separate, but just not combined as a fusion drive. If there is someone out there that has been successful with this, I haven't found them as yet.

Except I have backlight bleeding now, nothing terrible but it wasn't there before and it really bothers me now. Do you think it could be solved by ungluing and reattaching the screen? The only reason I could think of is that maybe the screen is under uneven tensions, because I can move the glow around if I apply pressure with my finger. Moreover my sabrent was automatically reconized. and yes I did format as you would with any brand new hard drive install. Which is why I never botherd to show. I formated using AFS which is the standard in current macs. I'm sorry if this isn't helpful. Also maybe let your NVME cool down if the formatting took some time. NVME ssd's have a tendancy to heat up and slow speeds down but I doubt that would be the case here

If ur a speed junkie upgrade to m.2 if not and your not confident with removing the motherboard then Consider jus sata ssd upgrade. The Apple ssd is very fast but it is overpriced. Did you upgrade to Catalina? When you first did the install of the NVME drive, did it format automatically to APFS? What about your external SSD, are you using APFS format for that also? Thanks.

Yup on Catalina and formatted and reconized the drive perfectly on APFS. As for the stock SSD I removed from the iMac and now using as external storage I've formatted to exFat so I can use it fully between my macOS partition and my bootcamp windows 10 partition

I wish I had seen this video before I bought my Mac mini but I had a question for you great video by the way. is the SATA connector still present on the motherboard
when you buy the iMac with just the SSD? you could in theory add SATA SSD in that big spaceif you could find the cable. I would hate to waste that big hard disk if you bought the fusion drive and just swapped out the blade. but who knows having just that 2 TB to be a back up for your back up would be a good idea!
I just realized it’s not too late I could return my Mac Mini I haven’t gotten it yet!

    • @imacjourney825
      @imacjourney825  5 лет назад

Jeffrey Davang in my video it shows brackets are there for the fusion drive as well as the space. So I’m confident the sata connector is there on the MB but jus not used. now if the sata will be plug n play I’m not sure. Should be though. It’s an interesting idea to use the fusion as a backup drive.

Can i do an Evo 970 plus with that adapter from Sintech? Also these PCLe drives heat up quickly, are you aware the fan runs faster or more? Thank you. Great video.

    • @imacjourney825

I think some EVO drives require drivers so do your research first. I think 970 is one of them that aren't supported natively. Yes they heat up but I haven't seen any performance issues as a result.

Hello, Thanks for the video. Great content!
Quick question: I have a 2Tb fusion drive (128gb SSD) in a 2017 iMac 5K. I've seen many videos of people replacing the hard drive for an SSD but NOT many actually think of replacing the SSD (PCIe) already attached to the mother board (128gb SSD).
    1. What do you think would happen in terms of performance if I switch my Hard drive (1.7Tb) for an SSD (500Gb) but do not change the SSD (PCIe) attached to the mother board.
    2. Would that still be considered Fusion drive? - SSD on SATA (slower) connection (500Gb SSD) and PCIe (128gb - original).
Hope you understand what I mean!
    Thanks in advance!

Hi thanks for the comments. Regarding your ask. I believe if you follow through with the first part of your ask on your own you will break the connection between the pcie 128gb and the stock hdd 1.7tb drive that came with your imac that make the two drives act as one- aka "fusion". Also the only reason to use fusion is because the 128 ssd is so much faster than sata spinning disk HDD. but if your are upgrading the 1.7tb spinning disk HDD to a 550gb ssd anyway why would you need to go through the trouble of re-establishing fusion with the tiny 128gb ssd? seems like more trouble than it's worth. I think the biggest challenge would be re-establishing fusion with the 128GB ssd once broken. I think most people just upgrade the sata HDD and perhaps use the 128gb as extra internal storage (assuming it shows up as a volume). But good luck if you plan on trying our your idea of fusion fast sata with fast sata (granted the pcie bus is faster than sata but I don't think you'll see much gain)

@@imacjourney825 Nice video! I replaced the HDD in my old 2013 iMac with a SATA SSD, and as you say, the "Fusion" is disconnected, and you are left with two separate drives. You cannot "re-Fuse" the PCIe and new SATA SSD into a working Fusion drive, as a Fusion must be an SSD/HDD hybrid. Some people have used the command line to make an SSD/SSD Fusion drive, but it resulted in unstable and pretty much unusable performance.

It is too risky so many things can go wrong. I did want to do this job but will not brick another imac

Use latex gloves (I used the cheap ones from harbor freight) when removing the old strip as to avoid getting any oils from your hands, use the gloves any time you might be touching any of this area. Also, use painters tape on all 4 sides for 12-24 hours after putting the screen back on to hold it in place to ensure adhesion.
