    Fantastic! I'm an IT consultant, I read description to see if maybe my imac wasn't booting because of the name adapter I used.... the adapter reviews informed me that the 970 evo plus was the issue.

    Do we have to replace both old ssd and hard drive to install the nvme? Because i heard it is merged with the harddrive (fusion drive) and doesn’t work if we upgrade only the nvme and not the original hard drive.

    To anyone trying to figure out whether you can add an internal sdd or hdd to one of the high-end 27" Retina iMacs that were sold with NVME drives: Yes you can, HOWEVER, you must purchase a sata cable, (although there is a different ref#, the ones used in any iMac (part # 923-0312) will do), as they ones sold using nvme drives do not come with this cable. Nor do they come with the hard drive brackets - which wouldn't matter if you are using an ssd drive, but would if you are using a hdd. In cases where the drive is present, then you are in luck and will only have to remove the screen and a couple of the screws to do the swap, but in most cases, where the cable is not present, you will have to remove everything to get to the motherboard in order to access the sata port and power port on the other side of the board- which I'd advise to do anyway since it is a prime opportunity to swap out the NVME drive for something larger and faster AND DO NOT FORGET to get an Sintech NGFF M.2 NVME drive adapter for this. They are easily obtained and very inexpensive. Be sure to get a heatsink as well for better drive cooling - especially if the nvme is going to be your only drive.

    Pardon my ignorance, but I have a question. I have the iMac 18,3 (late 2017, 2TB Fusion drive) and I was going to order the OWC hard drive upgrade kit for the 4TB SSD, but then I came across your video here, as well as a comprehensive upgrade with CPU, RAM, and SSD.
    My question is: how does this NVMe upgrade work in conjunction with the SSD upgrade? I see that you put in this 1TB NVMe drive, but you also swapped in a 1TB WD SSD into the old HDD spot. Does the system treat these as 1 drive for a total of 2TB? I am specifically looking to add some space because I backup my iPhone to my iMac and I am approaching 1.5TB stored. I was going to add the 4TB SSD from OWC, but it would be cheaper to put in a 2TB model of this NVMe plus a 2TB version of the WD SSD you link. Will that combine for 4TB of storage?
    Again, pardon the ignorance, but I don't understand how the NVMe drive and SSD are handled by the system.

    • @beau6113
      @beau6113 Год назад

      Also--will the system remain compatible/capable of booting into bootcamp? The OWC website has a NVMe drive kit, but it specifically says it will no longer be compatible with bootcamp...

  • @ameremortal

    So when you do this, can you put the original drive SATA drive back in and use it as a backup drive? In other words, can you use the SSD exclusively for Macos and Windows but not have the system use the SATA drive as a fusion drive, just as a regular hard drive which can be accessed and used to backup you files? How would you do that? Great video...

Now, I finally decided to take this step and do this upgrade to my 27" iMac 2019. The only doubt I have concerns the temperature sensor. I'd like to know if it's actually worth installing. Hello, the temperature sensor is no longer required. The latest MacOS removes the need for a thermal sensor. I completed this on my iMac late 2015 replacing NVMe and Sata SSD. Works like a new mac. If you replace the thermal paste, it’s an extremely difficult task to get that heat sink back on and make sure you spread the thermal paste on the GPU die with a gloved finger or suitable spreading tool!!!!!! The iMac will overheat if you don’t. I spent a week trialling and error and had to buy a new heat sink as I destroyed it. If you need any further help, please reply to this message

      some recommend to do it beforehand. I believe if you only change the NVMe, which is the part of the fusion drive where your OS is stored, you need to do it before hand so your Mac can read it. If you change both the NVMe and the HDD it might be different as it will no longer assume it is a fusion drive but 2 individual drives.

      I just swapped my late 2015 iMac i7 27” 256GB drive with a Samsung 2TB Evo 970 Plus and now I’m getting more than 3,000 MB/s for both read and write. Not only do I have a ton more space but the speed is also more than twice. You need the iFixit tape kit and the adapter to hold the drive. Go for it if you are a careful person following instructions exactly.

Then I added a 1TB Samsung 860 SSD to the SATA connector giving me a total of 3TB of SSD memory. I completely abandoned mechanical drives and I recommend you do that too. They are way too slow and when your computer is already open, it's much better to replace it with a modern SSD SATA drive.

The HDD is the main bottleneck and if you've never opened the iMac, it builds A LOT of dust that causes the system to thermal throttle so you have two things working against you. • @wertherland
      @wertherland 4 года назад

      Te recomiendo poner el sensor. Apple se comunica con sus HDD via algun chip propiedad de ellos dentro de los discos. Cualquier otra cosa que pongas, sea SSD o HDD, el ventilador principal va a volar todo el tiempo un 30% mas rapido que el nominal lo cual lo hace bastante audible y molesto. Nominal RPM son 1200 o 1100 para iMac 15.1 (la que yo tengo), para eso necesitas el sensor. Ponelo debajo de los platos, sobre el frame de aluminio. Si es un SSD, cerca de la interface, del lado de abajo del drive, sino el panel LCD toca el sensor.

      Good question and I don't think they would. The iMac came with an nVme SSD from the factory.

      @@WarriorsPhoto yeah but some faster ones are hotter.

      @@YugaKurita Ah good point. Maybe that's why Apple uses a heat sync on their SSDs. What kind of computer do you have?

    Dude That 32GB SSD is for fusion Drive configuration. its not the whole system disk its pared with the HDD. So Stop complaining that apple gave u a 32GB SSD

      Supposed to write the most used data/ apps there, and 32gb isn't enough. fusion drive is almost useless and botherneck this powerful machine. JMO

    Thanks for the detailed demonstration on how to upgrade the internal M.2 NVMe SSD.
    I was a bit afraid to open my iMac and choose to use an external Thunderbolt 3 NVMe SSD instead. The Samsung X5. I made a video of how I did this : ruclips.net/video/QBXa4oYeZns/видео.html
    In the description of my video I put a link to your video, so people can use this if they choose to replace the internal drive.
