The first album I ever bought myself was a tom petty two disc greatest hits. I was in 8th grade and listened to it from to make almost every day. All because of that super bowl concert!

Tom Petty was such a fantastic straightforward songwriter. Solid songs that bear repeated listening. I'm sure what he did, along with Mike Campbell, was harder than it looked. That greatest hits compilation is amazing.

I never thought these two songs were similar either but dang they are. Good on Tom! I never seen such a great song released as bonus material either. Tom Petty knew what was going on.
The problem with music (mainly rock) is that so many songs have a similar sound and fans immediately scream “rip off!” like coincidences can’t happen.
The more I hear of Tom the more I'm inclined to think he was one of maybe a hundred rockers with ethics and principles as well as being a superb songwriter. RIP Tom you are missed !
Many years ago, my now boyfriend knew a girl who was dating TP and The Heartbreaker's drummer. So, he and his girl were invited out to dinner with them. (This was when he was attending college in FL.) Tom was there of course and he told me that Tom was quiet, but very nice. I definitely believe that!! Good on Tom for not being a jerk about the whole thing and just letting it go like that. He was a class act. RIP Tom, you are missed. 😌❤

Such a class guy. I admire him for that as much as his great music. One of the passings that really affected me. He always stood up for common sense and the common people.

Yeah they sound similar but I agree not enough. Now the Song Stay with Me by Sam Smith was a different story and Tom Petty ended up getting writing credit since it resembled Free Fallin quite closely

Tom Petty was just that musician you couldn't help but like. Dude was awesome RIP. I thought he also said something like "If you listen to a song that sounds like mine, you already know who's song it was..." or maybe I'm confusing him with another artist similar to it. Then you have the Marvin Gaye family. Those sue happy people made me decide to immediately change the station or press skip on the internet radio if a Marvin Gaye song came on (I go through my Motown/Soul/R&B phase lol) - Tom Petty will be missed

It's a telling thing that not many people have bad things to say about Tom. He clearly has a stand up guy, and he was a top-tier rock singer/songwriter. Not enough people like him out there.

Something a lot of people dont understand is how f*cking easy it is to "write" a song or riff that youve heard somewhere else.
Finalizing a musical idea feels very similar to figuring out how to play something, and theres no easy way to tell which one youre doing if you dont remember the song youre "learning."

I’ve written songs and thought “man this is great” then realized it’s already a song! Have done the same with lyrics.
Exactly. Especially if you grew up listening to bands. Your influences will always influence your music and how you approach a riff self consciously. I feel like people who don’t make music can’t comprehend that so they scream “ripoff!”
