Add me to the odd person out. I watch Abom and other similar videos to learn stuff. I just don't understand brain dead people that just want to watch chips or sawdust fly.
@@an2thea514 Since this is volume 1, it implies there are more to follow. Personally, I don't like this format. No intro, no outro, no commentary, no thanks. Bit harsh perhaps, but honest.
I'm on the fence .. if it's just random things being made, a description is great .. if its a routine project, I like foguring it out and "testing" myself to see if I know what's happening.
that shaper running at the beginning reminded me of going out to the clubs in the mid to late 80s.....you put some synthesizer with that and you have a real hit
Not being a machinist, I have learned quite a bit from your videos and will view either type video your post. However, if I had a choice, I prefer understanding the project, order of operations to complete the project, and the set-up used to do the machining. Then the machining is just icing. Not a rant at all, just my preference. Thanks.
The most relaxing thing is when your just watching someone work in a shop like this. Not much would be said other then a little bit of them talking to themselves. There is noises being made with equipment then it shuts off and there is only background noise while they inspect their work. You get tired. Then another machine turns on and you watch as it kind of hypnotizes.
Yeah, just add some super slo-mo and sexy lighting. Oh yeah and some reverse film where the chips fly back onto the piece! And one more thing… strobe lights.
If this is what people requested, then fair enough. Sorry to say that it's not for me I'm afraid. I prefer the original style, with your commentary and machining expertise. That is what got me into this channel.
Señor Adam. In minute 19:25 You can see how the drill bit gets moved by the center of the hole I assume. Is that normal since this also happens to me when i be drill holes on the lathe even when using a brand new drill bit. Is this something to be conserned about. I notice my tale stock is a little bit higher than the center of the chuck. like a 1/32.
I love watching you work. I'm not a machinist at all but watching masters like yourself making stuff that we take for granted today is humbling. I never knew what a metal shaper was until I caught you rebuilding yours and it's amazing to watch in action. Your work is amazing, all of it. This collection of clips is a showcase for your skills and the quality of your work. Your the best
Too bad machine shop classes are not in high school anymore. I remember how fun it was to make something with our hands. Kids these days only type/write code. Not the same as machine shop.
@@ricktan5663 I can't believe machine shop isn't still taught. It doesn't matter how advanced a thing gets it'll still need someone to fix/repair it using the skills Adam has. The world will always need engineers as much as it'll need script kiddies.
Ok I admit that I'm different, but, when I heard that rhythm of the shaper planer it put a song in my head (hooked on a feeling). Just find that machine so interesting and relaxing.
Watching and listening to those machines took me back 70 years to my grandfather's shop. No words, just work. The only thing missing was a cheap little radio in the background playing country music and tuned to "WESC - 660 in Dixie."
Thank you Adam these are the sounds I sleep to. I have tinnitus and also difficulty sleeping, so I played your shop sounds and cutting-edge Edge engineering from Australia play his sounds all night long in my ears. If I don't it sounds like there's a jet engine screaming in my head. In another lifetime like in 1970 I was in machine operator so these are familiar sounds to me. Thank you
now this is how a man relaxes the white noise of industry and fine detailed craftsmanship --__-- ahhh maybe go longer on the clips for the white noise thats what I like, especially the shaper or the lathe running, at least that is what zens my mind.
I love watching Adam's videos to learn about manual machining but there _is_ something weirdly relaxing about just watching the machines (and Adam) just do their thing...
The Shaper fascinates me. I had never seen a shaper before but a year ago i watched you use one as you worked on a project for a friend. It was a very good, 45 minute video dedicated to just the shaper.
Nothing will happen there. It's a showroom. Maybe the Precision Mathew lathe gets used occasionally, but all the rest of the super expensive kit will stay close to pristine. I bet most of it is technically just on loan. That's not a big deal really. Much of it is totally unsuited to use in a job shop. It would literally take longer to set up one of the CNC machines to do a lot of what he does than doing in on the manual ones.
Ok Booth, free idea for you. Similar to the fireplace videos, set up a 2 foot long 8" round, cutting a couple thousands a pass and just record it., then loop it to get the various time lengths people are looking for. That'll put people to sleep, or in a trance, or whatever they are looking for it to do for them. Same for the shaper, I was just listening to some Steely Dan then jumped to this video. The sound of that shaper was amazing, I kept thinking you had added music and I was waiting for the instruments to kick in. Lol. As a Boomer drummer.
If you want your tool to last for one, no but really some metals like cast iron are very abrasive, also depth of cut, that's alot of friction, aluminium is soft but gummy so needs it, basically use cutting oil all the time, he doesn't always use it because he has the camera close
Excellent diversion, sir. Not that the dulcet tones in your Florida Panhandle drawl aren’t welcome but this was a nice change to just hear the machines do the talking as it were.
Well, Who is Adam Booth? This pretty well sums it up. An Excellent Machinist who is proud of his trade and is willing to share his knowledge with others.
Thank you so much for this ASMR…I have watching your content for several years now. Found you back when I was injured from work and could not sleep. I love the engineering and work you do and by no means is it boring. Some how I found your content soothing and it would drift off to sleep even in intense pain. My dr told me “if you can’t sleep, you can’t heal” and so I want to thank you. I am healed up (mostly) and back to work.
Good to see the old Abom, just doing what we love to see him do, not having to hear a brand name drop along with what part number he's using, just world class machining at its best with no bs additives in the mix!!!!
I absolutely love this, I've been wishing for something like this for years! I find clips/videos of machining operations really soothing and comforting for some reason and enjoy watching them just before going to sleep. This is perfection! Thank you so much for this!
Loooooove that shaper sound! Just the lathe running facing that piece is nice too. I think this came up on facebook a while back, and the end result is even better than i thought it would be. I really like all the different sounds!
One of the best parts of your videos for those of us who aren't machinists is hearing you explain what you are doing so we can learn. This video without dialog leaves out over half of the best part of the content. It's easy enough for them to mute your dialog and play themselves some music. But those of us trying to learn cannot add in the missing dialog/explanations.
Very enjoyable, especially when the shaper works in a perfect beat, sounds like music Only thing that I find a little irritating is that some clips only have audio in one ear
@Peter McLaughlin I was only there during removal not during commission.I am assuming they did it in dry dock. That's the only way they could have got the machines into the machine shop to begin with was to cut several holes through the decks above and crane it down
Without commentary there is no learning ! New viewers do not have a clue as to what is being done. I have been doing machine shop work for many years, so this to me is very good and I liked it..

I can literally fall asleep to the sound of machines. Especially the lathe. It's so relaxing!
Super cool. Let the machines do the talking!

3 generations of experience being shared/taught right here!! 😎
Respectful critique would be that the video transitions too often and abruptly to enjoy the ASMR qualities.
Sitting here in my comfy chair, wood stove going, hum of the machinery, and i can't stay awake. Excellent video!
