  • How does Facebook know that you doubted to buy something on another website? They use tracking pixels! A small image that is added to other websites & track your activity and interests. Let's Simply Explain how they work.
    Tracking pixels are small 1x1 images that are practically invisible, and yet, they can transfer your personal data to advertisement networks like the ones from Facebook, Google and Amazon.
    Tracking pixels are sometimes called a "web beacon".

    Thank you for this Public Service Announcement about this unethical and creepy practice. Isn't stalking illegal? If so, it should be illegal online, too. Very well explained. Wouldn't it be great if people just stopped clicking on ads? Why go out of your way to be exposed to lies?
    Keep up the good work.

      It's a good point and something I always wonder why not more people talk about. The amount we're being tracked online is like we all have like 20 cars following us around everywhere we go with someone inside taking notes on who we talk to, for how long, how long we stay and what we do wherever we are in real life. It's insane. And all in the name of increasing profits for a few companies and worse yet, building predictive models about each and every one of us so they can sell use even more stuff and god knows what else they use it for.

    Thanks for the explanation, but how does FB / Google or ad networks that don't have 1st party data know it is the same user to retarget the content to? And if the answer is through cookies, what will happen when Chrome finally blocks 3rd party cookies? Is there a way besides fingerprinting?

    So I understand the tech, but I don't really understand why. What's the point of using an invisible pixel instead of just linking a Javascript file?

    But even if you block the tracking pixels, you're still going to see ads. They just won't be relevant to you. What's the benefit to you? If I have to look at ads, I'd prefer them to be about things I'm interested in. This video is very well crafted and informative, but takes a negative tone about tracking pixels that is not justified.

    I understand the concerns, i am wondering how consumers will feel when they start getting served very generic/of no interest ad to them. it will be like watching TV 20 -30 years ago, same pharmaceutical advertisement that i do not care about at all over and over and over, "restless leg syndrome pills" comes to mind

    I still don't get it. So, a person clicks on a website page that somehow has a "pixel".....whatever or where ever that is???......and then when the person closes that website and goes about their day searching stuff on google....all of a sudden an ad pops up on google with a picture of a product that was on the previous website that they visited..........again....how was this "pixel" information shared between the website and Google? I understand how cookie works.....that makes sense to me but this "pixel" stuff....I'm still very lost.

    I still do not understand why they use GET request for pixel, but not just POSTing some valuable data

      The difference isn't that big anyway

    • @filipstamcar6553

      Probably because with pixel tracking (GET), it loads just as an image, but for POSTing data, you need JavaScript so it could be blocking more easily.
      But it works almost the same.

      If you are logged into your account on your phone or your computer the tracking pixel can tell who you are and what you looked at. Certain browsers like Firefox give you an option to opt out of being tracked by third parties. Apple just gave its users a way to opt out for those who update to the newest ios 14.5 update.

    I found it creepy, but also a necessary tool to provide revenue for otherwise free online services. Shops should also be able to serve wannabe customers who don't end up buying anything at high quality with detailed search and comparison features, which all costs serious amounts of money to develop and maintain.

    You don't explain the most important part: if I visit a webshop and then another site, how does Facebook/Google/Amazon know that I am the same person?

    • @AssFaceNFT
      @AssFaceNFT Год назад

      From what I understand, if that website does not opt-in to Facebook Pixel, or Google/Amazon ads - then the website does not communicate with the third party and the cookies are not transferred.
      I don't see how the cookies could track anyone if the website publisher does not opt in to a network call with FAG!

    • @realjgerard
      @realjgerard Год назад +1

      1. You’re still signed in to FB and/or Google and/or Amazon.
      2. Every website tracks who visits them (cookies). If you consent, the pixel relays the info back to the source of the pixel.
      So, sign out, and deny consent. Bingo. 😊

      You might- this is a great intro into the insidious targeting world but it goes much much deeper. Apps share data about you in a real time bidding marketplace- including ones with very private information including dating apps. This gets very dangerous very quickly.
