    Very helpful, thank you. After watching your issue with the bottom mounting screw not being long enough (on the DeWalt), I realized that if you cut and remove the bottom half of the double-sided tape it works without issue and the self-tapping screw is more than long enough, without need for a spacer washer. I wouldn't have realized that without seeing your video first.

    Good instructional - thanks! I’ve done this a cpl times now, and wanted to let viewers know you actually DO want the foot slightly above the planer bed. Half the thickness of the metal is perfect. The bracket is so flimsy that it’s impossible to get it and keep it perfectly level. What you DO NOT want is the foot below the bed. That will cause calibration problems. Second - throw away the piece of junk drill bit they give you- it’s too big for the screws supplied, which are also junk. The idea behind the 510 is brilliant but I wish wixey would include better quality hardware and charge an extra $10-20c because I don’t see this rig holding up over time. A backlit display would also be nice.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings

      It seems to be the norm, that hardware supplied with any after market accessory is of poor quality. There's a reason I usually throw it away and install my own. The moment I see a Phillips head on the hardware, it's gone. Thanks for tuning in to the show and for chiming in with your experience with the gauge. It's appreciated.

      kennyearrings1 the manual does not mention a way to offset the height adjustment like yours.
      I did reach out to Barry Wixey apparently mine is an early version of the WR510 type II, it only has three digits
      I mistakenly called it a WX510 the WX is model of a weather radar on the airplane I fly.

    Ken, thanks for the installation video. I only have one question, what function does the ruler on the vertical bracket serve? Is it more or less a fail safe item in case the batteries go bad in the digital readout or maybe a sanity check to show a rough measurement? • @acutabove_woodworkings

      That's two questions Paul. LOL. I'm not sure of the purpose of the ruler but I use it to wind the planer blades down to the rough size of the stock before I turn the unit on. That way it saves a little on the batteries. As for whether or not I think that it is worth it.....I've been using this unit for over 3 months now and my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. Absolutely love the digital readout for the planer. thanks for tuning in again this week sir. Always great to hear from you.

  • @DonnieKluck

    So two questions
    #1: should the measuring bar just drop down on it's on with the spring tension? No matter how much I adjust the screws as soon as I start to tighten them it no longer freely moves, it is kind of bound and I have to push it down. The manual says it should come down on on with spring tension.
    #2: Once I have everything calibrated I do not want to raise or lower the height unless the digital readout is on correct? I assumed that if I moved the height when the digital readout was off it wouldn't be correct when I turned it on right.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Год назад +1

      Yes, the bar should come down on it's own. It's not a fast movement, but it should still come down. As for moving the planer up or down.....the digital readout does not have to be on in order to do this. The unit will automatically read the position it is in on the bar and change it's readings accordingly. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings

      I believe, that all you need to do George, is have the melamine in place when you are first calibrating you digital readout. It will look a little odd, as your planer readout will register as a negative number when the melamine isn't in place but you can easily zero it out for the thickness of the melamine prior to planing. Basically, you would calibrate the readout as if the melamine was the base of your planer bed. I hope this helps.

In total I've lost over 60 lbs and although it's been a lot of hard work, I think it's been worth it and the doctors confirm that my heart is stronger than ever.

    So ... I'm confused, I think! LOL! All all vibrations and screws incompatible and, thus, the blue Loctite?

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  7 лет назад

      Any time that there is vibration involved, there is the opportunity for the nuts and bolts of a machine to come loose. It's for that reason that I use the Lok-tite to ensure that everything stays at the tightness that I installed it at. As long as you use the blue type you will be fine as the blue one can be broken. The red Lok-tite is permanent and can only be broken using a blow torch.

    Do I have to calibrate it every time I use the planner? Or do I have to calibrate every time for different thickness boards I am wanting? I am planning quite large boards so do I just do a scrape piece then run the actual wood through?

    Good evening Mr. Earrings. Thanks for sharing these DW735 videos. I possess one of these (friend bought it but i borrowed it...he then decided that he did not want it so I got it for half price.) Thanks for the video! I'm about to install mine right now! It was very well narrated and with no annoying music like a lot of videos feel the need to add. Any tips for getting rid of snipe on the planer? I've only had mine a few weeks and it's already driving me insane.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  4 года назад

      Thanks for the kind words on the show Scott. I too find the music annoying. Good luck on your installation. As for snipe, I find that a really well setup planer will greatly reduce snipe. I have a DW735 maintenance video on the channel which demonstrates a great setup method for your in-feed and out-feed tables which can pretty much eliminate snipe. The only way that I have found to completely eliminate snipe on any box thickness planer, is to run sacrificial 1" wide strips, that are about 4" longer than the stock you are planing through the planer at the same time. Have the strips extend about 2" beyond each end of your workpiece and that way, any snipe will end up on the strips, and not on your finished piece. I hope I am explaining myself well enough. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

    Kenny - Is the cabinet the plane is sitting on, one of your designs? Is it also a flip type cabinet, i.e. two tools attached to the platform?

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  5 лет назад

      The tool stand that you are asking about is not one of my designs. I built this one a while ago and you are 100% correct when you say that it is a flip top tool stand. The planer is on one side, and an oscillating sander is on the other. It's a real space saver in the shop and it's a real back saver because you don't have to lug that big planer around to set it up each time. If you would like to see the flip action, I aired a video of it a few years ago. ruclips.net/video/nMYzhITQNLA/видео.html

I have the undersize Shelix cutter heads but it appears I can compensate for that pretty easily. I don't know what algorithm YT uses to present these suggestions to me but they are doing a great job. I had looked at your videos on the channel and not seen this one earlier. My planer is underneath the right extension of my table saw and is not easy to get to so I think I have one more cabinet to build! Regards and good job once again. Bill

    you can not flatten a board in a planer, if it's got any twist is transfers to the other side. To flatten you run through a jointer or you plane it.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  5 лет назад

      Agreed. I'm not exactly sure why you feel the need to state this on a video about a digital readout installation but I will play along. You are 100% right. The thickness planer is used to dial the stock into a desired thickness after the stock has been flattened and trued up on a jointer, providing two perfectly flat and perpendicular surfaces. Then, and only then can you run the stock through the thickness planer to mill is down to it's final dimension. Just to cover all bases here, there also might be a band saw involved for the re-saw process to rough cut the stock down to size before planing to avoid excessive waste. Thanks for tuning in and for taking the time to remind us that a board cannot be flattened in a thickness planer. The feel rollers of the planer will only compress the stock into a flattened state and then duplicate the warp or imperfection on the opposite side.

    • @jc51373
      @jc51373 5 лет назад

      I am only saying it because YOU stated you were flattening the board in your video, which to anyone planning to buy this planer and any accessories for set up could find misleading. Unless you have a reference edge you can not flatten, which I am sure you understand, just calling it out.

      I've only ever heard of one person who did this modification. Apparently the diameter of the helical cutter that he installed was actually smaller than the factory cutters so it ended up changing the depth stops and a few other minor issues but he stated that the quality of the cut definitely made up for the minor changes that it made to the planer. I have considered it myself and who knows, maybe one day down the road it will be on the show.

    • @pfoster2338
