    The air raid warden helmets often had a small nick taken out of the rim to denote that they were not good enough fro frontline troops. However they were good enough for protection from falling masonry, hence their ARP use. Black or White most common Warden colours depending on rank and or location. All factories had their own fire wardens and these vary a lot in colour and decoration. Military establishments also had appointed wardens and my guess would be that the later was used on such, probably an airbase.

      German word for warden is Wart or Wärter, today dated.

    My father was a WWII Warden (England), I remember, during the 1950's seeing his old helmet, which was painted black with white text. Hope that helps.

    I was wondering if you would mention the change in shape and the early rimless type A from the Somme ... the early British helmets were rimless and ROUND with completely circular brims, whereas the later c 1917 or were OVAL . I originally observed this in the Mons War Museum in Mons, Belgium, but you can see people detailing this on ebay as well.

    I'm Australian, and our troops used the brodie helmet for as long as the British did. I have one, unrestored, and it's a MKII with the British liner and adjustable cloth chinstrap, but it doesn't have split pins. It uses the American style rivets. So it doesn't quite match any of yours there. Makes me wonder if we manufactured ours here in Australia. Looks like I've got some more research to do!

      Well, I've found my answer. We did indeed make them here as well, Commonwealth Steel Co. in NSW made them. Mine is stamped MKIII 1942.

      Mk II British helmets no longer used the split rivet. I have a 1939 British shell with circular rivets.

    There were also British police Brodie helmets . Painted black , i think , although i am not sure . I had an uncle in the reserve police and one day arrested a suspicous character . He told the man to follow him to a phone box so that he could telephone for a police car to take the prisoner to a police station . My uncle , who was issued with a bicycle , told the man to stand outside the phone box and guard the bike for him .....i think we can all guess what happened to the bike and prisoner , never to be seen again .

    Both the last helmets are WW2 era American civil defense helmets. I am not sure but I think these came before the standard McCord produced US civil defense helmet. They also may have been private purchase.

    The warden Helmet is a Mk1* (mark one star). its a WW1 helmet brought up to WW2 spec. A lot of the army started the war with these helmets as the Mk2 was slowly replacing them. So as more and more Mk1* were replaced they made their way into civil defence.

    I recently saw an article from Popular Mechanics( or was it Science) magazine referring to the US WWI Brodie as the Kelly. This is wrong. The WWI helmet which was worn by English Speaking soldiers in WWI was known as the tin hat, battle bowler or tommy hat.Kelly comes out in the 1930's and was replaced by the M1.

    The warden helmet helmet is a reused ww1 helmet it’s probably Scottish as English wardens had black or white the other one with the split pins would have been used in 1920s by the British army in the Irish war of independence

    I have a Brodie pattern, with a strange suspension system. It appears to be an oilcloth ring, with laces, also the cloth chin strap is just riveted in place without bails. It attracts a magnet, and has quite a few dents, I'm thinking mild steel. Haven't seen anything like it, and doesn't have any heat stamps. Any ideas?

    My Grandfather was in WW1 he was in the 32nd Division 107th Engineers. His helmet has what looks like sand applied on the outside. Is this camouflage? Why was it used?

    • @stang3787
      @stang3787 4 года назад

      Yes, it was put on later manufactured helmets to cut down on "shine' when helmets were wet.
