I really like the 3rd edition more than 2nd. The battling just seems way more strategic and thoughtful than mindless dice chucking that's in the 2nd edition and the map is beautiful. I do love the expansions for 2nd edition with the snow, desert, and jungle settings they did. To bad that didn't make its way to 3rd.
Throwing the 'runes' up into the air and letting them come down was even more thematic. I ended up putting mine in coin capsules since this went out of print so quick. As you stated, I really wish they had the 2nd edition settings for the expansions. I think if Unbreakable Bonds came in the original box and didn't come out as an expansion, this may have taken off. I was lucky enough to get UB and Caught in a Web at a FLGS after you couldn't get the expansions anywhere.
Just got a steal on a complete Runebound 3rd in fantastic shape, including Unbreakable Bonds and all 4 other expansions! Was even already painted. I already have the Core game and Dark Star expansion that I've painted, but thankfully these new mini's were painted decently so after a couple hours of shadow/highlight touch ups, adding grassy bases etc... they don't look too mismatched from mine. So I built a 100% complete set using the best parts from both to keep as my copy, and will put the extra Core box, plus Dark Star expansion and painted minis up for sale! Good times
Thanks for featuring this game. I've always loved this game. Have all the expansions and an extra set of tokens just in case my original ones get destroyed due to heavy use.
Love the game. Best part is the pog combat. It's simple, but tactical, tense, and fun. Would love to see it in other games. Would love to try 2e as well, but getting it isnt cheap.
I really recommend buying plastic coin protectors for characters/items tokens. Immediately improves combat experience, because you have nice, clanking discs instead of throwing pieces of cardboard. They are super cheap and usually well balanced (equal weight of plastic on both sides) and come in plastic tubes that can act as organizers.
I try to limit the amount of plastic I'm responsible for, which is why I rarely use card sleeves or coin capsules, and why I prefer cardboard standees over minis. But I know a lot of people like those! I actually prefer the feel of cardboard over plastic as well.
@@TheDungeonDiveSame here. I also rarely use card sleeves. Usually only for frequently used cards. Like for example characters from Citadel that are exchanged from hand to hand all the time and must not have any marks on reverses. Not to mention sleeves make cards hard to shuffle. But in this case I'm happy I bought coin protectors, that will extend game life and resell value and nicely rattles in cup before throw.
Thanks for this Daniel. Luckily I got everything for this game a long time ago. I put the pucks into coin capsules to give a bit of weigh when using. I do house rule. We go down the timer track half way but don’t draw any story cards. Once we travel halfway we set back up to the beginning and then start properly. It gives us a bit more time to enjoy travelling and getting a little bit of extra gear. The game is still brutal and winning is still a difficult thing to achieve.
Yes, coin capsules is the secret to make it feel more like a "dice chucker", added bonus is some these coin capsules kits come with a storage container where you can easily sort the runes to easily find them. Fits perfectly in the unbreakable bonds box.
I really enjoy this game. There is some overlap with the heroes from descent 2nd, and I have many of them painted. I decided not to repaint the duplicate minis in Runebound, but realized that some of the sculpts for the repeat characters were unique. It was an interesting discovery. 👍
Yesss! So glad you kept with the series and got to this little gem. Now…I know you enjoy playing it as is BUT I just need to let you know that there is a Minions and Allies PnP variant on BGG that you can add to the game to get those lovely allies back (the minions are what the final boss gains to keep things balanced). There are other fan made scenarios and even map extensions to try as well!
I was waiting for this video!! I actually got a new copy of this last year, it must have been sitting in the back of some store room because it still had some dust on it when I opened the shipping box 😂
I just got in to Runebound after getting a copy of the 2nd edition on Ebay. what an epic game let me tell you i'm hooked. I did solo with the doom tracker at 1 to 1 xp setting and took 5 hours which i had to take 2 breaks. After finishing the game i was so hooked i ended up ordering big box expansion (Runebound Second Edition: The Island of Dread) and one small one (Runebound 2nd Edition: Cataclysm Adventure). It's shame this amazing game is out of print and anything about this game is so expensive.
Just painted this game a coulpe weeks ago. The minis are only about 24mm, much smaller than the standard 28mm size and too small to really mix/match well with normal scaled minis
One of my favorite boardgames ever. Have nearly everything of 2e and still put this above though-- though I agree both fill different niches. Some hated the pog combat and wanted dice, the combat is one of best things of the game and the AI boards added a lot (I've even bought some wooden dice at Hobby Lobby to customize just to prove you could replace the pugs with dice rolling and the game still works). I never fully ever cracked this, but I've attempted in the past to use RB3e as a semi rpg engine for solo playing rpgs, never fully cracked but its still a concept I'd love to get back to see if I could figure out. Would love to take the pog concept of battling and incorporate that into a bigger scale battle typical in rpgs, like 4 heroes verse a party of goblins lets say. Dark Star made sense as a non solo/co-op because that expansion had no big bad, it ended with all the heroes turning on each other and duking it out to see who was the best. Finally, I was able to find red skill cards as a fan expansion on BGG, I had already sleaved all the mini cards and just slipped them right ontop of the co-op skill cards. I also have a few expansions of Decent, never played any but I got them for the intention of somehow converting it to Runebound skill cards and heroes, maybe, or to use the minis for Battlelore. That's another great fantasy flight game, Battle Lore. Both RB3e and BL are great and itd be hard for me to pick a favorite between the two as they're pretty even in my book.
Great game. I haven't had it out in awhile. I think this marked the end of FFG's golden age. The final expansion that added solo, co-op, and AI boards for combat, really made a great game even better (but I too figured out solo without it). People started to appreciate the game more, but too late for FFG. I always hoped they would re-release it with all the expansions for those who missed it, but it's unlikely. I bought the Realms of Terrinoth RPG sourcebook to use as a lore and history reference for the boardgame. Runebound 3rd edition is a bit of a fantasy classic that got lost in the shuffle.
One of my best used board game grabs was getting this with all the expansions for $300, with the added bonus that all the gear tokens were in coin protectors. It's a great game but you really need the co-op expansion to make it more fun because the overall concept doesn't really work well as a competitive game.
I love this game. Especially with "Fall of the Dark Star" PvP expansion. Huge degree of freedom in exploration and character development. Well designed combat that is not just boring dice throwing. Quite easy rules - my 10yo daughter can pwn me in this game if I'm not careful. High quality figures. And overall feel of adventure. What I don't like is boring map, with no difficulty or rewards progression. Opposite to Talisman or Zona Secret of Chernobyl. So we borrowed idea from Smallworld and made home rule that mountains are twice as difficult - double HP for monsters, double search throws (you get highest common), but also double the reward. That differentiated exploration and introduces a bit of thrill to it without adding too much complexity.
It's been a while since I've looked at them but I believe unbreakable bonds came out last, but fall of dark star didn't actually have a villain in its scenario, but instead turns into a PvP, so the solo coop version doesn't really work? I'm fuzzy with it though :)
Runebound 3rd Ed was priced at Amazon at 24$ for a very long time before it came out of print, or while copies lasted. I guess it have to do because people at that time were not to happy with throwing card board tokens for combat. Solo also was a separate expansion that was expensive at the time because it was out of print. So maybe a combination of the two factor was the demise of the third edition. I believe that the solo issue was the more significant one.
I was really excited for this one but like you I was disappointed when I found out about the allies. I wasn't a fan of the chit's fighting system. I guess I'm just a dice chucker at heart. I do love all of the other changes. I would be interested in seeing if anyone has made a house rule for the combat system.
The game is very balanced too imho. There are times when I feel like I will never win, but it comes down to literally my last cast of runes ftw, phenomenal game.
It's not. For example you can make freakishly unbalanced build like Zyla (from Fall of Dark Star) with learned skill that you can mobilize to use⚡ability multiple times to remove opponent spent token from next combat round - that literally mops the floor with every monster or player. Master Thorn and Lyssa are also very overpowered with right set of skills/items. But.. I love it. Finding those synergies leading to "broken" build is fun.
It's a great shame that Fantasy Flight abandoned the Runebound Saga, even though they continued to hold the Terrinoh Universe license. I love Runebound more than Descent, even though they have different styles. I really like them in the following order. Runebound 2nd > 3rd edition > Descent 2nd > Descent 1st Journey > Descent 3rd.
Thanks for covering this! I'm considering picking this up in the secondhand market. How do you typically play solo? Just base, or with Unbreakable Bonds? Just curious how viable playing solo is with just the base game - you mentioned in your video you may do that sometimes. Thanks!
I play all of my games solo. Even ones not made for solo, I just play by myself. Like Talisman or Runebound 2e, you can just play the base game by yourself to see if you can win.
Since you mentioned Descent, Daniel, would you mind sharing your thoughts on those games as well at some point ? ☺ I mostly mean the 1st and 2nd editions, since the mandatory app kinda ruins the 3rd one, at least for me - as I really need my board games to be just that 😉
I no longer own decent. Sold everything quite awhile ago. For a time it was one of the only games in town, but I got tired of the almost pure skirmish play.
For solo play, which is how I play, the 3rd one would be the best. It's the only one that doesn't feel like a race game, and the app is really well done.
@@TheDungeonDive True. Though the app for the second edition should be decently well done as well, although I've never tried it myself. Thanks again, Daniel, I appreciate your comments 🙂
@@TheDungeonDive I've never liked the race game either, by the way, so have always thought of both the 1st and 2nd editions as needing a good deal of house-rules. Though, I've never owned the 2nd edition myself.
This game could be a 10 with a few changes IMO. I would like the quests to be a bit more developed (subsequent cards, a bit more lore). Also roaming monsters instead of static encounters would make the world more dynamic. Lastly the game is still a race to defeat the scenario but I'd love to have more time to wander and buff my character as I wish. I always feel I have so little time that I never complete everything I'd like to.
I own everything for 3rd, but was let down by it. To me it felt like they made 3 for people who didn't like Runebound, not those who did. I didn't like how they mixed in cards of other types in each deck so you'd walk forever for a fight and not get one from the fight deck. The pog combat is too deterministic. There's always a best solution so you're really just doing math with a veneer of the illusion of choice. I also think they caved in too much to people saying 2e wasn't interactive, and added interaction for the sake of it. I really miss just having an adventure, getting stupid equipment combos, and going nuts. I'd like to go back and give 3 a few more plays but we almost always reach for 2. Great video, though. Always happy to hear other perspectives.
I love Runebound, as is evident by this super detailed deep dive series. Both editions are fantastic and different. But I totally get preferring one over the other because of the differences.
to this day, still cant find any game that gives the same feeling of exploring the world and go from city to city to buy items... i love this game. wish they do 4th edition with a lower setup time and faster combat system.
If you like big epic hexcrawls like Runebound, but with even more adventure, more questing, and more things to do and discover, Hexplore It: Valley of the Dead King is your game.
Random question for board gamers, one mechanic I love in RB3E is the synergy and tactic of trying to make skills, items/weapons, and innate abilities flow off one another. When it happens, its almost feels like a "lightning rod" effect, combining this Skill with this Skill creates this effect, and because I have item X, combined together it creates this effect. Its one of my favorite aspects of the game because although its randomized, there is some strategy of preplanning stuff and keeping certain cards in your hand, hoping that you might find other skills/items in the game that would trigger beneficial triggers. I'm very unfamiliar with the different genres of deck and card games, is this a common troupe/mechanic among card games? The only card game that I've gotten into is Sentinels of the Multiverse and I guess I can kind of see this mechanic represented there. My question is, what other boardgames/card games ect have this sort of "Lightning Rod" effect/synergy built in their games? RB2E sort of had this with the runes and stuff, but the concept really flows beautifully in how RB3E pulls this off, without being too over complicated, text heavy, or you forgot to trigger something because there was too much to keep track of. I've played FF's Lord of the Rings a few times--- which completely feels like like Runebound 4th edition and like they dropped 3e for the Middle Earth game--- however, I felt RB3E was the superior game and preferred their battle mechanics over the new ones made for LotR. So that game didn't really didn't have the feel of the mechanic I'm talking about here.
I think you're describing games that allow the players to build combos, and cascading effects that trigger other effects. Sometimes, in the euro spaces, this is called engine building. I think it's a popular thing that a lot of gamers like, becuase it lets us build our engines / characters in a way to trigger these cascading effects.
@@TheDungeonDive Thanks! Do you or anyone else know any off hand examples of games that do this really well? I guess combo is a better word to use lightning-chain effect. I like how RB3E tied this with leveling up instead of like a one time use and its gone (or the card is discarded).
Yes, I feel like I always have to relearn that process when I haven't played in awhile. There are a few setup player aids to download on BGG that makes it easier, since the original manual isn't really all inclusive because of the expansions.
I'm goining to buy RB 2 with 3 or 4 small expensions or the RB 3 Edition. I saw a lot of videos about both versions. I dont care about combat, because I like both. What edition would you suggest?
It's really up to you. In the Runebound playlist on the channel, I present a ton of information, enough that you should be able to know which version and expansions to look for.
@@TheDungeonDive Right now I' going with RB2 with four small expensions plus the BGG made expensions that you can buy at artscow. Have you ever tried another Battle system at RB2?
I have the complete collection, bought it as it was released. I like the game but I'm not in love with it. If I'd meet someone truly questing for this game I'd just might let go of it ^^
It is a shame that Runebound 2nd edition lovers helped to kill this game, i have both 2nd and 3rd edition and this is the better game especially in terms of the doom tracker and the modular quest decks which help tell a separate story each time and the various skill decks. Its an amazing game and remains in my top 5, i wish they had released more expansions but there is a decent amount of content
Oh yeah, I got that. I meant I'm not surprised they wouldn't talk to you. :) Terinoth is their main fantasy IP, and there's no way they'd talk to just some guy wanting to buy it. You'd have to get lawyers to contact them for that kind of thing to even get the ball rolling on any licensing / IP purchases. That's a HUGE undertaking.
It's really a shame that the game was abandoned so early. I would have loved expansions with different adventure boards.
I really like the 3rd edition more than 2nd. The battling just seems way more strategic and thoughtful than mindless dice chucking that's in the 2nd edition and the map is beautiful.
I like how RB3E tied this with leveling up instead of like a one time use and its gone (or the card is discarded).
hi, I'm solo player and new to this game. Do you think I have to introduce the UB battle system? or begin with base game system? ty :)
If you have UB, definitely use it as it makes the enemy combat imho much more varied and interesting
ty i'll go for it than ;)@@geerstyresoil3136
YES! RB3E!!!
Really love the game, I just wish it wasn't such a pain to adjust the decks.
Yeah. That part is super annoying.
Yes, I feel like I always have to relearn that process when I haven't played in awhile. There are a few setup player aids to download on BGG that makes it easier, since the original manual isn't really all inclusive because of the expansions.
I have a big post it note in my box that reminds me how many of each card makes up each deck.
@@TheDungeonDive and what would be your choice 😂?
My choice was both. :) I like 2nd edition more for house rules, 3rd edition more for RAW.
@@TheDungeonDive Right now I' going with RB2 with four small expensions plus the BGG made expensions that you can buy at artscow.
Have you ever tried another Battle system at RB2?
Have not.
When you play the base game solo, do you just play it as a two-player game?
No. Just solo with one player.
Yeah I love this game it's a shame that you abandoned it moreover I tried to buy the copyrights to it they didn't even talk to me
Lol. Yeah. I’m not surprised.
I meant they not you
Oh yeah, I got that.
