This is brilliant! Such an undertaking to make this video, I'm sure. Thanks, Jon. You've helped me finally understand why everyone's been gushing over this game.
@Bachpat, currently on kickstarter there's a new listing for the next expansion as well as reprints estimated date release 2020. Kickstarter is up now, but not for much longer. So if you have the game and love it it may be worth your while to grab anything you haven't got. I'm psyched for the content myself. The downside is having the wait for it. I already want it yesterday!
I just want to say "Congratulations" for accomplishing this gigantic task. The time it took for you to think about the actions of all 3 players in such a complex game with so many powers and abilities... wow! Amazing thing!
You don't know, but you actually inspired me to make solo playthroughs in my channel. I tried it once and didn't like the result, I thought it was impossible to do something good and interesting to watch, but then I found your channel (through the Great Western Trail video) and it motivated me to keep trying. You show me that it is possible. And this particular video here.... just kudos! :) Thanks again for all you have done.
Thanks so much for this, I just played yesterday for the first time with my friend. Your video helped me to understand and teach him and we both had a blast.
So glad you're giving this game more publicity. It was my #1 game for 2017. The first time is always a little rough, but playing it again co-op you see both people's brain working together. The theme just shines.
Wow! Thank you so much for this. I just discovered Spirit Island a few months ago, amazing playthrough. I'm yet to win a game with a single spirit, getting there. :)
Thanks @Jon. I've had this game BNIS on my shelf for about a month now and you've given me the confidence & understanding to open this up and teach/play this at my next game night.
Thank you so much for the playthrough. I've been on the fence on this game for awhile, but this convinced me this is a great game. Now I need to stretch and hydrate after watching this long video! Thanks for all your efforts.

I love your playthroughs sooo much Jon. They give the best idea of how a game plays and I love that you explain all you do and also your mistakes (Imho they make the video better). Of course I watched it until the end. Can’t get enough of Jon! On another note this sounds like a coop game that’s perfect for me. If all the information is available to everyone and it’s not complicated enough I end up quarterbacking a lot despite my efforts not to. Also I love deep strategy and this seems to have it in spades! Thanks Jon you are help sent from board game heaven.
Thanks for the playthrough, this was incredibly helpful as an instructional video! Even though there was a lot of mistakes made, your detailed annotations helped to point them out and help me notice them. Great all around, you're great!
I played through this game with a friend before watching this video. That helped me get the "gist" of things, but this video has really helped solidify my understanding of things. Your explanation, coupled with your extensive annotations, is exceptionally useful for this complex game.
I'm glad it helped you out Travis, my main goal really is to try and help these games click with people and it's great to hear that happened with you :)
I must say I love the level of escalation in this game in that the player becomes more powerful over time and can make bigger power plays, like wiping out multiple cities and towns in one shot and then triggering a fear card to take out or push even more towns and cities. But then the adversary also gets more powerful over time as more blight gets added and eventually they trigger special abilities and can attack multiple terrain types. It keeps the game very intense until the last turn. Excellent playthrough as always, you certainly won that game with a literal bang that was just beautiful. XD
This game really is a brain-burner, which is a really fun and welcome change from the typically super-simple co-ops. Thanks for the fun play through! I'm jealous of your win.... (I have yet to pull one off....)
You do an excellent job of only explaining what you need to in order to progress the playthrough. It would have been very easy to get bogged down with rules early. A lot of thought and planning gone into this.
Wow what a fun video to watch. You really did a phenomenal job on this. You made things pretty easy to follow especially considering you were playing 3 spirits at a time. I'm a big fan of coop games and you definitely sold me on this one.
How in the world did you do this?!?!? Controlling 3 Spirits with such elegance and clarity?!?! My brain would turn into total mush! Granted this game is rather new for me. Im still struggling in solo mode with just one spirit hahaha I hope it clicks soon, theres just so much forward thinking involved. And I consider myself a pretty avid gamer too! I LOVE deep strategy games! I'm sure I'm just probably being too hard on myself and im just a couple games away from feeling more confident. Thank you so much for the dedication that went into this video. Just out here doing the lords work of helping those like me who want so badly to excell at this game, but currently are on the struggle bus waiting to get off hahahaha
I ordered this yesterday after several days of trying to figure out if I should buy. If I watched this play through days ago I'd be playing the game right now! Great job! Can't wait to play this :)
Great video, Jon. Thanks for the clear playthrough! My kids saw a bit of your video and wished we had this game AND WE ALREADY DO! CHRISTMAS IN JANUARY!
Great amount of work. I imagine that setting up the video and taking all the decisions must have made the game last twice as long. Game looks very fun, but definitively for advanced gamers.
Great video! Another fantastic job. Super helpful. As soon as I finish the rulebook I go right to one of your videos to see how it all works. Thanks again man.
Great run through. Props to you for keeping track of all 3 spirits! I think this game is a little too brain-burny for me to be able to play regularly, but I can definitely see the appeal
I thought the same until I tried it solo with just 1 spirit and absolutely fell in love. In fact, I bug my wife by leaving the game setup because I know I’m going to want to play it again the next day 😅 this has been going on for weeks now 😂

Superb video, thanks Jon. I discovered your channel through NPI and the Last Place Podcast. This game is SO much of what I like in a coop. 1:00:52 But... The town can't Ravage successfully because you have innate Defend 3 due to the Sacred Site. You should have targeted Thunderspeaker and have them push the explorer out of the eastern most Sands (space #6) or the south-western Sands (space #3). That would prevent a build. Also earlier you should have pushed the explorer from southern mountains (#5) to jungle (#6) above it. Spreading Invaders around is a bad move.
Soooooo much better than Rhado. Ssshhhh, don’t tell him 😜 your videos just are much clearer and way less...”spastic”? Sorry Rhado! I do still enjoy yours! 😇
He sucks? stfu . That comparison doesn't even make sense. Rahdo basically record his stuff in only one take, no editing, nor anything else. And it's done like that to try to create a similar experience for the person who is on the table playing the game. He is also a nice dude and very passionate about the hobby and has done so much for the board game community.
I love Rhado, and support him on Patreon, but he makes WAY too many mistakes. It completely takes away from his videos. Jon is a lot more thorough and makes fewer mistakes and is a nice break from Rhado's spastic ways too lol.
This game is so amazing you can play two player in a 1 player setting and use both your brains to get it done.i messed up my 1st three games I thought you didn't gain elements until your power card activated and I was using my innate powers too late
Please clarify the difference between push and gather. They way you are using them they seem to be the same thing. I would feel like in order to gather you would need presence on the area you are moving the dahon to. Where as push you would be pushing them away from an area that you have presence. Around 51minutes you talk about gathering a dahon but it seems that that would be pushing.
Every action has a set of requirements for picking a legal region, and once those are met you can perform the action. In the case of Pull, you can then bring some number of units from an adjacent region into the targeted region. In the case of Push you can take some number of units in the targeted region and move them to an adjacent region. I believe your confusion stems from the assumption that presence is required in the region that is pushing or pulling, but this may or may not be the case depending on the card. The action around the 51 minute mark allows a region to be targeted that is 1 away from a region with presence which is why the region I am talking about gathering to doesn't necessarily need to have presence (and in this case doesn't). I hope this helps, let me know if you would like further clarification.
Ok, that makes sense. Yes, I was assuming you needed to have presence in the area. I just got the game yesterday and haven't had a chance to read over the rule book yet. Thanks for the quick response!
You've totally stacked the Power decks. I just can't believe the amount of luck you've had drawing perfect cards. Call Of The Dahan Ways would have been a better option in the long run.
It's true that I cheat abit in just about every playthrough I film, so it's likely that I stacked the power card deck at some point in this video. That being said, I try to do it as rarely as possible and it mostly happens when I want to force a teaching element into the video sooner rather than later.
Well stacking the game for tutorial purposes is better in some cases. Ease rules onto the player. Never said it was a bad thing. I just couldn't believe you to be so damn lucky. The odds of perfect draws is so tiny.
Nice Video Jon! The best way to improve this video would be to take a picture of the cards and cut to them, rather than fighting to lift the cards up to be in focus. Many times I was struggling to read blurry cards. You almost always eventually got them into focus, but a hard cut to a split screen showing the card clearly would be great. Spirit Island seems to be a very interesting game! Warm regards, Rick.
Yeah, I've been trying to increase the quality of these videos over time and I do think I could have done a better with the cards in this one. Editing cards on screen like that later would have significantly increased the edit time, but it's something to consider.
Great video, but I am 50 mins in the video and have not seen you talking about Special rules for all of those spirits, at the left bottom side of the spirits board.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. This video was made a couple years ago and over time I have been honing and (hopefully) improving how I record these playthroughs. Now that I focus on making a "tutorial" first before a playthrough I am much better at highlighting all the important mechanics as early as possible. In the past I just mentioned them whenever they applied to the game and it seems I didn't use those abilities for quite some time in this video. Sorry about that.
I would like to double clarify, in 32:05, he mentioned that even though the invaders dealt 3 attack to the land, but due to the spirits have 3 presence, there is no blight dealt. Is that really the case? Cause according to the rulebook, in page 9, Whever there are invaders in the shown land, invaders deal damage, damange is done to both land and Dahan. Then sub point number 1. if 2 or more damage is dealt, add a Blight to the land. The rulebook did not mention at all that we can factor in our presence to prevent blight spread, is this explained in somewhere else that I could've missed something? As it seemed like I played the game wrongly if that is the case.
Damn thanks a lot..... Indeed I played wrongly cause I thought defend only +defense to the Dahan. And also thanks for the speedy reply, totally didn't expect that.
@@JackLim927 No problem :) I try to reply to every comment that asks me a question, sometimes I can get to them quickly and other times it may take a couple weeks.
At 22:30, isn't that we only gained 2 energy instead of 3 energy in the video? The rulebook mentioned energy gained is equal to the highest uncovered number on the energy presence track. Thank you for the video.
Pushing buildings and towns around seems ... odd. Still a pretty awesome game though. I'm buying today! 1 person playing 3 players is always going to be better than 3 separate players. Hive mind and all that.
How long do you think a game would run on average? This play through was 2 hours and a lot of the AP and decision making time was cut out. I'm really liking this game but getting people to sit down for a 3 to 4 hour game can be hard.
Keep in mind that I also have a full rules teach along the way in this long video. I have played a couple 4p games already and in general they took around 2 hours total not including any teaching.
I have a question... at 16:38 you drew a card that was called "Draw of the Fruitful Earth", that let you gather up to 2 explorers, and up to 2 Dehan, from up to 1 space away from your presence. But the Dehan that you gathered in the forest were 2 spaces away from your presence, not 1. I'm still learning this game, could you explain this? Does the card let you gather Dehan from anywhere on the board, and place them only up to 1 space away from your presence?
With cards like this you must target a region that is within X spaces of your presence, but after that you activate all actions on that card based on the targeted terrain NOT on where your presence is. Does that make sense?
I tried and tried to get into a game of this at Origins and failed. So I peeked over people's shoulders long enough to get confused, which is why I didn't buy. Then. After reading so much on BGG, I decided I'd buy the game wh, en I ran out of other things to play from my library, and then promptly forgot about it. Then, with ComSim canceled, my friend and i booked a hotel in Anaheim to game our guts out for three days (12 games done!), but before we checked in, we stopped by the Dice Tower. I'd mentally committed to Great Western Trail based on BGG reviews and after buying I asked about Spirit Island, and there it was, high on the shelf, just begging to jump into my library. I bit. At home later, I unboxed and began the rules before decided to shortcut to BGG to get the flavor. After a couple of rather disappointing videos, I landed here, and before that, I was ready to shelve the game permanently. Jon, you changed that! Thank you SO MUCH for talking through all the decision making and game play, and especially thank you for adding the text clarifications (though I wish they'd been onscreen a gnat's posterior longer). I won't be jumping into a 3-player solo any time soon; today I'll be launching my first play, a 2-player solo. Thank you again for all the effort you put into this fine exploration, and also for your diligence in answering questions on this site. Huzzah to you!
At 21:30, when you moved your purple presence over and you could still gather one more Dahan, does it still have to be relative to the original position of the presence? Or since you now moved the presence, you can gather a Dahan from one space away from your new location?
I believe it's relative to the current position of presence, not necessarily the original position but it might be a good idea to get confirmation of this by asking on the boardgamegeek forums.
You target a region that is up to that range (in this case 1) away from your presence and then pull a dahan from any adjacent region to the one you targeted. So we didn't actually need to get range to where the dahan started, just where they ended after the gather action.
34:45 there is 4 Dahan. 6 damage worth of Invaders. The Invaders STILL attack the Dahan first not the land. It's just the Dahan don't take damage. So the land should have been fine. No?
I am confused about blocking blight. I dont see how this is done in the rules. The rules say that the invaders attack the land and the Dahan. Does defend defend both of this damage?
I'm lost when playing solo with 1 spirit. That dude plays solo with 3 spirits! Must be a jedi!
It's easier imo to play with 3 or 4 spirits solo than just 1 or 2 since you can chain abilities.
"Is it possible to learn this power? "
"Yes from a Jedi"
In still wondering how was Tom able to pull this off. My brain burns by just evaluating possible actions with a single spirit 😨

Thanks for making this video! ^.^ Love this game!
Good job. I was a bit worried you were not gonna win that one.
Do i want to buy this game? It's been on my list for a long time and this great playthrough makes it very tempting... Good job!
If the growth action says put your spirit token 2 tiles away from one of your presence, can you choose move 1 or 0 instead of 2?
Yes I believe you can.
very well done!
Thank you for your amazing work!
Best spirit island playthrough!
Editing cards on screen like that later would have significantly increased the edit time, but it's something to consider.
this was fun and informative thx
The yellow player's spirit has a special ability which adds defense to a space when they have 2 more more presence there.
Huh, yeah I think I did misspeak there, thanks for pointing that out.
Great job with this, I am learning this now, trying to run through a two hand solo game and it is a lot. Not sure how you handled three.
I was only able to do it by spending a TON of time on it. I think the filming for this took close to 10 hours.
Hey, on this island there’s nothing saying that those aren’t forests. No harm in being creative!
Pushing buildings and towns around seems ... odd. Still a pretty awesome game though. I'm buying today! 1 person playing 3 players is always going to be better than 3 separate players. Hive mind and all that.
Jon, you’re adorable! But I sometimes question your sanity when you play a game this long on your own! Hahaha
Bruno .FRod Interesting. People play video games solo for much longer but don’t really hear anyone questioning it.
Amazon quick buy. Thank you. Fantastic video.
I hope you enjoy it :)
@@JonGetsGames - doesn't take long to lose ;-)
Awesome video, thank you
I also have imaginary friends when I play solo board games
2:08:09 You only pushed 3 total, not 3 each? Unless I'm missing something...
Good catch! I'll add a note thanks.
Nice video!
Can we have a small review video of this game, i need a little push to buy it. I heard the podcast when you talk about it.
I intend to do a full review of this one in the next month or so hopefully. Spoiler: I'm still really liking this one.
A solo game would do just fine rules wise.
@13:25 aren't you 2 away from your presence when gathering the dahan?
You target a region that is up to that range (in this case 1) away from your presence and then pull a dahan from any adjacent region to the one you targeted. So we didn't actually need to get range to where the dahan started, just where they ended after the gather action.
I recently started playing the app and I got to say that this game is hard 😅
At 32:55 1 dahan should die since damage happens simultanously with the attack of invaders? The other dahan survives
Unfortunately, it's been too long since I played this game to remember the rules enough to answer your question. Sorry about that!
I have a question about the game. Can you use the Reclaim One in every Card Plays phase with the Thunderspeaker spirit?
Each turn, you can reclaim one card at the same phase where you gain your energy based on your energy track.
Well done
You should do Meko Card Games Farm Game next
34:45 there is 4 Dahan. 6 damage worth of Invaders. The Invaders STILL attack the Dahan first not the land. It's just the Dahan don't take damage. So the land should have been fine. No?
Blight is added when 2 or more damage is done in an area, it doesn't matter if the Dahan are hit by it or not.
@@JonGetsGames Oh. I thought 2 damage had to be done to the land not the area?
@@markfrantz4612 I believe it's just "doing 2 or more damage" total, after defense is applied of course.
At 1:14:27 how can you push Dahan to the targeted space? I thought you must target a space, and then push Dahan from it?
Unfortunately, it's been too long since I played this game to remember the rules enough to answer your question. Sorry about that!
I am confused about blocking blight. I dont see how this is done in the rules. The rules say that the invaders attack the land and the Dahan. Does defend defend both of this damage?
Defend essentially lowers the overall all attack amount, so it can lower the attack below the adding blight threshold.
@@JonGetsGames yeah, i realized that defend reduces the damage in both the attacks against the dahan and the land.
I like the mistakes as it makes me feel better about my own tragic excuse for game playing. If a pro does it the rest of us stand a chance.
