I'm so glad I found this video bc I'm trying to decide between these two right now for off-roading, camping, in NM in the States and carrying my Dog (a 3 year old english mastiff) around for the 2-3 days a week.
Only recently found your channel.. Love your enthusiasm for anything to do with cars! your content is always interesting with brilliant banter between you all and very well put together... keep it coming..
Having owned a Disco 4 for a year now, I’m convinced it is peak SUV. The Odyssey was perfect when the kids were little, but now, the functionality, off road capability, towing capacity and road trip comfort make it peerless. Perhaps one day I’ll get to drive the new Disco, the Defender.
Disco 3 will be recognized as a legend at some point. Best vehicle I've ever owned. I've had 4 LRs.. defender, d2, classic rr, Lr3 4.4 V8 petrol (probably the most reliable LR engine ever). They do everything - high speed luxury tourer, van, people carrier, tow rig. They work very well in real off road situations too.. You may have problems with a 98 corolla but a 2cv or an old Citroen GS on high setting might do it.. did the cameo mall crawler hit anything underneath?
The "mall crawler" is actually a full body on frame 4x4 with 8 inches of ground clearance in stock form, we were mostly worried about it's 20 inch chrome wheels that no one actually orders it on.
had to watch the whole video to see if there an apology for those trousers! 😱 had both a disco 3 and now a L322 TDV8 4.4. Engine in the L322 is different gravy but the practicality of the disco is hard to beat that being said there are things about the L322 that are more practical like it is easier to clean the interior (especially the rear where dirt gets in and under the seats) and the way the rear seats roll forward is great. I have put a leisure battery in mine and plan to camp in it etc. Such a great car to live with and the most relaxed/ comfortable ride ever plus incredible stereo all for 10k! can't beat them :)
You can buy one of these if you like to spend lots of money. As a former JLR employee I owned a L322 for some years. It was the most comfortable ride and the best vehicle for long range journeys ever, but at the same time - even for me working for the company - the most expensive car to keep ever. And once the car gets older the chance of an expensive repair will naturally rise. Ever repaired the air-suspension system on the LR ? Or exchanged a TDV8 engine. I loved the car but in the end the growing cost for servicing and maintenance forced me to sell it.
You absolutely need see pockets to keep one of these working. They're great if they've been looked after (undeniably the most comfortable car I've ever owned) but they require a fair bit of money spending on them to keep them in good condition. I've repaired the air suspension system on the Range Rover twice 😅
Not true that it's an especially comfortable ride. So many sedans are far more comfortable, even the previous-gen lowly Mercedes C-Class W205 with the acoustic pack and air suspension. Let alone a basic BMW 5-series. Those aren't burdened by the massive weight (especially unsprung weight) and high COG needing to be dealt with by the compromised suspension which had to be designed to also deal with long travel and off-road conditions. Sedans have far more suitable chassis and suspension and can thus offer far superior comfort for long range journeys. Their bodies and chassis are also not massively compromised by the huge weight, off-road needs, and those increasing costs thus needing to cut costs elsewhere. So the sedans (and wagons) can be far better optimised for quietness. Going further those sedans allow you to budget for, or they simply have available comfort options which I believe (not sure) weren't available from Land Rover. Well, the W205 C-Class didn't have its ventilated massage seats on offer until pretty late in its model run, but the E-Class and 5-series had them for a long time. Stating that Range Rover was "most comfortable" is IMO clearly wrong since even a basic C-Class or 5-series had more comfortable suspension and lower noise levels, as well as more luxury equipment. Not to mention what more expensive cars like 7-series and S-Class offered.
@@pistonburner6448 Well, you may have your view on this, I have mine - after driving hundreds of different cars over the course of 30 years in the automotive industry here in Germany, working for different premium brands and owning quite a number of cars myself I stick with my view that the Range overs the overall best package when it comes to comfort, space and versability, plus its comes with full off road ability, so if you can afford it, it would always be my all time choice.
The Disco is undeniably more practical. Just depends on what you want from the vehicle, and whether you'd take the luxury over the practicality, or vice versa
well I get arcade machines and fruit machines with ease in my l322 with rear seats folded twice it then gives you a totally flat space so I would argue there both like a van 🤷♂️🤣🤣
If you listen to what is being said, we are referring to the other engines available in the L322 Range Rover at similar price points to Discovery 3s on the Used car market
Great video, thanks. However I did notice that you had road tyres on the Disco - they look like all-season road tyres to me. They look the same that I have on my X-Trail and I almost got stuck in a muddy field recentley (overflow car park in a country hotel) where I had all four wheels turning with no forward or backward movement. Luckiiy I switched on the diff-lock and, with a lot of sliding, I did manage to get out (just) without getting my feet muddy. The ideal tyres are all-terrain if you are driving mainly on road with some off-road as they will cope with most situations (and what I plan to put on my X-Trail next time).
@@JasperBruceWrightI used to work as a husky musher in the arctic circle in Lapland. Bless your heart and your slightly too tight women's boots while sat in a car 😅❤
Between them it’s totally down to prefrans personally i would stick with my RANGE ROVER but discos are equally good. But I’ve found for my uses the Range Rover smashes it and i feel very loyal to it let alone the experience of operating one. Also the fact i can have a V8 also is a win for me.
This is true, but you do have to beach it before it will give you it's absolute maximum height so it wasn't really convinient for the test, also those extra emergency lifts are so rarely used we thought this would be more normal reflection on how they compare
@Buckle Up peice of wood under the chassis ... then again it goes waaay up ... I did it and drove it ... the dash lit up like a Xmas tree on the motorway lol
Had both the Disco 3 and 4, both suffered broken cranks at approximately 120,000 and I changed the oil every 5000 miles but I suspect that before my ownership they may of been neglected service wise. Own a TDV6 2005 Range Rover now but did prefer the practicality of the Disco, looks so much better and still looks modern, plus 7 seats but I’ll never own another one for the crank issue has cost me serious money. It’s a shame they didn’t put the TDV8 in the Disco like the RR Sport. I’ve still got my Disco 3 and if I could transplant the engine from my Range rover to my Discovery 3 I would in a heartbeat.
Depends on the spec you get - as while the things you mention were available, they were options or only available on high trim levels. Thr Range Rover is a lot more luxurious from its base spec to its highest one.
