Its important to remember that if you craft spears by using a short blade that has been repeatedly repaired and almost broken, the spear will reset the durability for the short blade after you craft it and take it off after using it up, this allows you to cycle the same short blade through multiple spear crafts. I also want to point out the garden fork. This is a very powerful spear because it has a very high durability compared to all others.
The Garden Fork is great to train your early spear levels combined with leveled maintenance. I like to start with axes so I already have a 1-2 lvls in a secondary weapon and maintenance.
I think you should've mentioned sprinting with a spear, which allows you to get a guaranteed instakill (though it's pretty exhausting). And stomping which, with boots, does more damage than some melee weapons, as well as preserving weapon durability (you do get damage to footwear, but you can easily replace it)
Sprinting with a spear is asking for bugs to bite ya! And you need A LONG run up to use it. But yea it is a one hit. Stomping with boots are 100% the way to go. Going to a trailer park or just in general getting black or desert boots are just so dam important. They affect your speed and such but they are so GOOD. They last a long time and 100% protects your feet from zombies. The wear on the boots from stomping them are nearly none. Compared to the constant wear of your melee weapons. You stomp if you have time but you NEED a melee weapon to get the Zombies hurt enough to get them on the floor. Sprinting with a spear should really be used to preserve spear condition. If you want to do a walk in the neighborhood cleaning up some stragglers? You take a spear or 4. Waking into the wrong neighborhood? Be not surprised if the speed shifting harden survivor point and advance speed towards you, puts down the coke bottle and charges you with the SPEAR! You can more or less trade stamina for a quite fun cleanup! You know, to making sure the zombies do not infest your safehouse area!

I’d like to mention a few things: 1. Strafing is important when escaping groups, but if you can stand still and wait for a zombie to approach it will cause more damage 2. Killing zombies on the ground is weird. No matter the weapon or animation, make sure you are standing on the neck. This will confirm a headshot.
one thing that I noticed is that once you get nimble to 3 and above, you can just let the zombie attack you while you back away holding rmb and they will miss their attacks. don't need to necessarily run and waste energy to get some range for attacking them.
@christianzilla they get locked in place when attacking while you are still moving. Essentially, they are only biting the air. It's risky but it's an option until you get higher nimble levels
@@christianzilla burglar gives plus 2 nimble and also drastically increases rate of nimble gain. AFAIK after starting screen only way to level nimble is combat. You used to be able to bug auto walk in combat, not sure if that’s still feasible but that’s cheesy of course.
The only things/tips I miss here is that: A) You should never have your back towards structure turns without knowledge what's there unless desperate B) You should never fight with your back towards trees, even if those help You avoid z-eye contact, they also obstruct youw view C) Multi-hit - althought it's mostly preference and enjoyers vs hardcores I have seen too many times a player get bitten because they always "assumed" a tree or a wall as a safe spot from incoming threat but forgetting something might be on the otherside as well
That and lone zombies, a lot of players can die to a single lapse of awareness like in the woods or in houses,... A player can kill like hundreds of zeds over long time and great survival strats but the danger of zombie infection doesn't go away. one of my best things abt zomboid
Yeah. I remember how my friends who's veteran was boasting over and over me being overprotective until all it took was a single zed attracted over trees who heard a bang from a crowbar.
I tell you man, fucking walls have killed me the most in this game, that and small objects with the isometric view sometimes deceive quite a bit with their hitboxes.
You don't have to be "hardcore" to not use multi hit though. Multi-hit is an unnecessary crutch to save you from taking herds on for no reason or getting cornered in a building due to a mistake you made, I start characters with 0 fitness 0 strength and have no problem fighting zeds, you just gotta know when you should run away instead of fighting.
After years of not owning this game, and having seen build 41 just recently release and a lot of coverage recently, it got me excited and I finally just *bit* the bullet and got it, I couldn't wait anymore, and I'm glad I did. I've learned so much about it, mainly from you. I'm watching your Cryogenic Horror series at the moment (I guess as a reminder of where I live currently, NW Iowa even though I am originally from Texas where snow is not as common), and I'm having a blast watching and learning. You make it look like such a cakewalk whereas I literally just bought it like last night and played the tutorial and I'm like, "Oh crap this is going to take a LOT of time to get used to." I know I'm going to die, a lot, but learning it is part of the experience. I really appreciate the details even in vanilla game, but I am so glad that there are a LOT of mods for it and so many customizability options to suit your own needs, and the ability to play with friends and others. I've been waiting for such an awesome survival post-apocalyptic RPG experience and I guess I never really saw in depth this game was until I saw more recent videos on it and I'm like, "I can't believe you can actually do this in the game!" The fact you can divvy it up and change your experience each time to keep the game fresh is honestly pretty awesome to be honest. Thanks for these guides, man! Appreciate it! Maybe one day I'll see you out there, I don't know. Keep it fresh, dude!
without a doubt the best in depth guide to zomboid weapons, well done on this. you even managed to slip in little tiny bits that prove your hundreds of hours in game. like the fact that knives become super common in zombie, sneaky tips like that are the best for long term survival
I can say with pride that my 40 hours in this game has made me capable enough to clear hoardes of zombies with relative ease and a big part of that is is these guides/tips videos by you.
It seems simple on the "junkyard" in a real scenario you usually pick up more zombies as you fight and it becomes a whole lot harder. But a really good guide anyways.
Late to the party, but this is the best combat guide I've seen so far. You might already figured this out, but it'd be better to read your titles so that if someone is just listening, they can still follow along and know what you're talking about. You're awesome, man.
Don't forget to stop sneaking when you have a crowd of zombies behind you! you do not gain sneaking exp if you are spotted so you are just gimping yourself by moving slower so the zeds can catch up to you
Something i like to do in combat all the time is something i like to call an “aim turnaround”, which is where you use your aim cursor to face your character the opposite direction from the horde you’re fighting before taking your jog a safer distance away. In my experience, performing aim turnarounds is much faster than letting your character turn themselves around automatically, and the technique has saved me many an unnecessary game over!
Very good guide, probably the best I've seen made on this topic, although there were few important things left out or lacked the highlight they deserved. First being weapon endurance drain - the amount of endurance used is greatly affected by the weight of the equipped weapon. Heavy weapons that weigh 0.9 drain 3x as much as 0.3 weight weapons and 1.5x as much as 0.6 weight weapons with EACH swing. If you get your 0.3 weapon proficiency/strength high enough to one-shot or two-shot zombies you will be able to take out much more zombies than even with the best two-handed weapons as those drain more endurance even if they also one-shot zombies. Short Blunt also swings faster than the big weapons so not only it's more endurance-friendly, but also higher DPS in super late-game with lvl 9-10 in weapon skill, 9-10 strength and at least 5 nimble. Difference between character with nimble and without is MASSIVE. Just lvl 4-5 nimble means you can just backpaddle and swing/push without needing to retreat like you did a lot in this video. It preserves your endurance, speeds up the combat and makes you generally safer. lvl +6 nimble is almost a god-mode enabled, you start to walk in combat stance faster or as fast as the zombies move toward you. You basically get to always pick your battles and combat as a whole becomes trivial unless you strayed from 'proper' zombie setting. Injuries from zombie lunges are NOT infectious like regular zombie attacks, these injuries are caused by you falling on the ground. The stun that comes with the fence lunge is the thing that is most likely going to kill you. For one, if you get stunned with another zombie already walking at you on your side of the fence, he will get a free hit and there is nothing you can do about it. Targeting the zombies that lunge is basically impossible with short weapons and requires great deal of precision and timing for long weapons. Most fences can be broken down by zombies and if you get stunned the moment they break through you are also likely dead. This is why I personally don't like fences, but if you find one of those indestructible fences or use windows in pre-built houses those never break and are always safe, as long as there is no zombie on your side of the fence/window the fence lunge in itself is harmless. It's just extremely situational and the potential danger that comes from them is not worth the benefit of killing zombies faster or preserving your weapon durability unless you are desperate. They are more of a last resort move than a "uu great, there's fences here!" as generally you want to stay clear of them at safe distance so there is not even a chance you get surprised by a zombie lunging you from the side or behind that you didn't see coming. It's very useful to have that foresight and knowledge of how dangerous fence lunges can be and making sure that even if you fuck up and you get stunned, it doesn't lead to your death afterwards. With fence lunges turned off, even the destructible fences suddenly become very OP and turns the combat pretty boring so I personally stay clear of this sandbox option (unless you play with sprinters like a true masochist).
Fitness really is what makes the difference in fights - not strenght, in my opinion! Strength is nice and all, but when that exhaustion kicks in having 8 strength stops mattering real fast :D Going for a "spear build" from the start can be real interesting, it also makes it easier to start with low fitness/strength in case you want some fun perks!
It is all a matter of option. I find myself doing much better with added strength, especially with one handed weapons. The knock down likelihood is king to me. I also really hate spears, but again everyone is different and PZ is good at allowing people to excel with different character types. Especially the garden hoe, something about the range and speed gets me killed everytime.
Strength 8 doesn't matter much anyways, just like fitness 8. It's the levels 9 and 10 that bring magic boosts. S8 gives you 115% dmg vs 100% at S5. S9 gives you 168%. F8 means 49% endurance loss vs 60% at F5 (so really, if F5 were the normal 100%, F8 would be 82% - but PZ numbers are weird). F9 goes to only 27.6% endurance loss. Sliiight jumps there. So it wouldn't surprise me if you don't find S8 all that impactful!
@@Muenni That's one of the points that kinda irks me with strength/fitness - unless you really go all in on one, you barely feel the effect of them, meaning if you don't start with them the average player will never reach 9 points in either
Very nice detailed showcase and explanation of the combat. Would also be helpful to show how to lure zombies away and lose them in the forest, or maybe that could be another video for stealth and avoiding zombies.
Never knew about that, but it's smart, use the bat to soften them up till they're weak or you're tired, then use the knife to either save durability or regain stamina over time, then bat again to finish them off
No seems to be mentioning the iso cursor you can enable in settings. This option will allow you to know exactly where you are aiming, so you can line up your cursor directly on their head for a faster kill while stomping. I usually kill zombies with one stomp wearing boots, unless I'm excreted or fatigued.
As a new player one thing i’ve noticed is that confidence is good, but once you live a while it’s easy to fall into over confidence and die to stupid mistakes
Hey man, I really appreciate this in-depth guide. The game has been exponentially more fun and manageable right after I watched this video- up to the point where I now feel comfortable fighting with nothing but pans/ rollers and my trusty foot. The only thing that seems to damage me now is when I fail to hear a zombie sneak up while I'm eating/ transferring items. Many thanks!
There needs to be some sort of machete holder to replace it on your back. You know something called a SHEATH like every short sword that has ever existed has had since antiquity. Completely ridiculous it doesn't exist in the base game. Just make it a rare spawn out in hunting lodges/campgrounds to actually warrant going out there.
I already knew them all. A bit of an advanced tip from me, if you hold alt (manuel ground attack) and space you ground attack around 30% faster, good when using fences. Another one you can hold left click and mash space to swing 30% faster, but it's incostistent.
A small tip you forgot that really helped me deal with hordes a lot better is to not attack while zombies are side by side, especially with short ranged weapons. With long range weapons you can get away with a lot more, but getting in the habit of not attacking while zombies are side by side is one of the best tips I could give to someone new!
Hey Lime, the best way to deal with fence/window zombies is making sure you are holding your left alt key. When not using the auto-target and hit directly on them when climbing will cancel their tumble animation and stops the floor lunge. Also the length and model of the weapon do affect the ranges and damage down. Anything that is on the tip of the weapon does more damage while anything below it does less. Spacebar can be used to cancel zombie animations depending on where they are, this can be used to keep zombies down when getting back up (it can also backfire as it makes their animation faster if mistimed).
I learned ONE thing, after over a thousand hours in this game that has changed it all for me. Keeping zeds in front means keeping them in a very narrow cone of safety. it's about 10 or less degrees. It's the ONLY safe place for zeds. if you have two in front, one at around thirty degrees left and one thirty degrees right, but still both in front, you're dead. two zeds in that tiny cone of safety, you're fine. (also, keen hearing so I don't have to look behind me) thought I'd share it, because it was hard learned.
About spears one shoting, to one hit kill you must hit the zombie with the tip of the spear, if too close you just swing the spear and have a great chance to not one shot.
Tomorrow I'm going to make a sandbox game and practice these tips. I'm new to the game and the struggle is very real in terms of combat. Feels like every time I step outside, I'm overwhelmed by them, no matter how good of armor or weapons I have. Hopefully I can get it right with your advice. Thanks for the video.
Can't wait to execute these tips as soon as I stop soft locking myself into attack mode by not releasing the right mouse button, which prevents me from jogging. 👌
Pressing the control key can cause your character to toggle the combat stance, maybe try and unbind that key if you keep having issues PS: the skill nimble effects how fast you enter and also leave combat stance, it's meant to take time to catch overconfident players off guard and get them killed so maybe train nimble a bit
@@TRUSTeTMguest Thanks for the tip! Though, control is for me personally an just-inconvenient-enough button to use. The tutorial was the only time I used the sprint function so far.
PRO TIP: try to save some maintainance when using a good weapon via incorporating shoves more often into your attacks. typically it works really well, and ALWAYS use your foot when attacking downed zombies, if not, ALWAYS aim for the head of the downed zombie. normally spamming LMB on a downed zombie wastes durability, so just walk to the torso, and spam space while trying to stomp their head about 2 or 3 stomps will kill the zombie
Actually taking a crappy weapon and beating a downed zombie in the legs is a good way to grind maintenance XP. You get xp every time you swing a weapon and it's durability doesn't go down.
Quick Question: How do you strike a zombie with your weapon when its down? This is a serious question, I only stomp them with my military boots because I CAN'T use my weapons on a downed zombie for some reason. Researched about this, couldn't find anything helpful.
OPTIONS. KEY BINDINGS. Combat. Auto Detect Prone or Standing attack. Tick that. Bind "Manual Floor Attack" to something. If you hold "Manual Floor Attack" and attack the melee weapon is used to hit the floor since you force it to. If you just "Attack" it going to floor melee attack also if a Zombie is on the ground. But it prioritize any Zombie standing up that is dangerously close. You stomp the floor with space bar or whatever. And you FORCE floor attack with melee weapon with "Manual Floor Attack" Key + "Attack" Key. It really should be the default way the game is set up. Do not know if controllers are different but keyboard and mouse this is how I play. I can not think of doing it any other way. Space being the safest key and attack key being less safe. And Manual key being me actively taking a risk of a Zombie standing up attacking me as I attack the floor.
This is how the game was to me when I first started 7 years ago...space button is not the attack with a weapon button it is the stomp/push button. You must hold down the R mouse button and swing weapon with L mouse button. If that isn't your problem, not sure what is ... Started this game on a laptop with no mouse trying to play with a mouse pad =impossible
11-12 thousand zombies to get lvl 10 long blunt and about lvl 5.5 maintenance with strong, ball player and brawler armed with crowbar. lvl 10 long blunt gives new meaning to the term "zombie apocalypse". My new biggest threat is getting ill from standing in giant fields of dispatched zeds.
I had a crowbar that i felt like i was using it forever, so i checked its condition. Turns out it was almost done for and still lasted me atleast a week. 10/10 use a crowbar
My favorites: Long blade for hordes on my back. Short Blunt on my belt for clothes I want. Short Blade on my belt for stealth kills and when I get tired. (You can still one hit kill single zombies with all the moodles.) Spears are good for that too.
If you wanna have fun with the game, make sure Multi Hit = On If youre stubborn, determined or masochistic enough, play with it turned off. Much more difficult, and you'll die of old age fighting hordes, but it's the vanilla settings (except for Survivor)
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong: a zed on the ground won't be able to stand up of another zed stands ontop of them in the same way as if it was the player standing on them. I feel I heard that somewhere. It's a risky move but it could turn a 3v1 into a 1v1 Also, can you hold down more than 1 zed at a time? I feel I've held 2 zeds down because another zed basically fell ontop of the 1st.
Another great beginner's guide. Your demo of taking on a larger horde was good to see. I'm still too timid to take on more than 4-5 at a time. Been trying to practice using the environment more when fighting. To other beginners: the crowbar is money. It ain't flashy but it's a goddamn workhorse. Don't sleep on crowbars. It also allows you to pry off barricades when you find survivor homes.
Solid intro, but I feel like having the time paused does conceal some of the difficulties, and eliminates the trade off between killing quickly and killing safely. Maybe you have killed ten of those twenty zombies, but now your getting thirsty and hungry, and maybe its starting to get very dark out there.
Hey there bro nice vid ! You really missed one imprtant moodle that effects combat way more than than others imo . And thats hypothermia ! Lowers your attack speed drastically along with all other important factors . Also its not a cool idea to jam regular mid fight jogging into combat strat cuz of two major reasons . One as you mentoned as about exertion and the other which is way more important than the first one in long run is grinding nimble skill ! I mean if youre not gonna grind it there you aint gonna do it anywhere else Edit: also the atmost important of all is having a backup of the main weapon nearby and i cant express how important it is ! Like i had 7 boxes of shotgun shells and two sj2000 s with a nice crowbar as main weapon ! I didnt checked its dur and went on looting rosewood mil base for em bags ! But guess what ? After killin 3 Zs crowbar broke and i dumped 6 boxes outa 7 with inifial aiming of 5 with beta blockers of em Zs but i got my cheeks clapped in the parking lot of the base ... ALWAYS CHECK THE DUR
Hey pr1vate, thanks for the video. I noticed that a few pve servers are switching to pvp. Do you think you could do some guides on how to defend yourself against other players ? How to make yourself and/ or safe house less visible or prepared to survive a little longer against other players ?
@@3Runner95 I know they can be viable when you've got the ammo and skills to take down the inevitable hundred-strong horde that the first report turns the twenty zombies you were originally shooting at into, but - at least while you're new - stay the hell away from guns unless it's to draw zombies away from a place you want to loot or you're already bitten and trying to die in a blaze of glory.
1:34 is super important, honestly everything else is secondary to having a high level of strength (carry capacity) and fitness. You can prepare properly for not having a construction multiplier or whatever but leveling strength and fitness is an absolute chore. Honestly, i don't know the state of bladed weapons prior to the multiplayer release patch, but in my admitably low amount of hours I don't understand the point of bladed weapons, short blade have the risk of close range, low durb, and they destroy clothing. and long blade is so rare as to be mostly pointless.
The hunting knives and the swinging short blades are pretty decent (and the meat cleaver is very good for chopping doors and trees), katanas do a lot of damage, and if you prefer spears, you can attach a machete to a spear
Originally short blades were OP! You never went into push mode, always kept jabbing and it never tired you out. A couple of years ago the hunting knife was king! The machete is on the other hand easily the best weapon in PZ (imho). The bushcraft mod and the like adds more types of them, but I do find them in vanilla. With level 5 and above on long blade and good maintenance, the machete will one hit near 50% of the time. You can absolutely cut through hordes like butta!
@@nerfherder4284 I remember the days way before Build 41 when you could do the jawstab with just a butter knife, and it was guaranteed to happen. Short blades had a reign of terror due to this
@@nerfherder4284 i totally apperciate this feedback. My longest surviving character (70 hours playtime, still alive) uses spears. Frankly, short blade seems like a hard ask in the early game. Ive seen a few machettes (3) and katanas (2) in my playtime but 5 total weapons for long blade during a 70 hour playthrough is rough. Shovels, axes, pipes, heck even pots and pans are way more accessible, a tad weaker but stick around much longer. Ive added the bushcraft mods the scrap weapons mods and the antique mods to spice it up so thank you for the recommendation.
It 's great for stealth... Instead of attracting a horde of zombies, you can sneak behind multiple zombies separately when they are not in a horde and insta kill them without making any noise that attracts more zombies. Obviously you will need other weapons as well as you will be facing hordes sooner or later, but it certainly has it 's use, especially when you want to grab some loot and run off without attracting to much attention. Obviously this works best in combination with the sneak skill and stealth perks.
Strength is much more important than fitness, with "Strong" being almost a mandatory pick. It not only strongly increases the characters' melee damage, but also increases the carry amount (with 18 for strong). While fit or athletic surely is nice, you can fight WELL OVER 20 zombies with even 5 fitness. And an increased melee skill also makes up for the lack of fitness. More damage = less swings = less stamina used.
so for some reason after about a week or two in game my character slows to a snails pace only in combat stance and i have no injuries not sick no moodles completely fine only thing i can theorize is i have cuztomizable backpacks on and i have it pumped all the way up on the weight of the backpacks but im not overweight in my main inventory even with a full backpack like 300 lbs 95 weight reduction still not overweight in my main inventory but maybe when im in combat stance it registers all the weight for a vanilla backpack or something like that?
because im fairly new to the game but already have over a 100 hours into the game and im completely fine when this happens like no sickness no injuries nothing
I remember the days where tripping in project zomboid is not a thing.. With a max sprinting speed you can run through a huge horde without a scratch in the Opening Hours Challenge xD
I had literally the best start ever, I spawned with beautiful weapons, a functioning car, hammer, nails, literally got the sauce and I got infected from one dumb bite I got from a bad angle. I snapped and massacred more zombies than I ever have before.
I have a theory that being at your weapons maximum hit limit gives a higher chance to do a crit. Has anyone noticed this or k ow anything about it? Edit:spelling
I have seen this in action most often with niche weapons like the katana, machete, and pick axe. I have found the most consecutive one shots with such weapons is at the peak of their range (almost before swinging too soon.) Those weapons also don't often do much damage if the target is too close in my experience (just outside of auto shove.) Use your stomp instead of ground strikes if you don't want to burn through a weapon's condition.
@@plasmashade6339 I get the same feeling. I mostly use short blunt and I’ll break out the fire axe as a dooms day for larger groups. I’ll swing before the green target outline even shows up and get a one shot every time. When the get close I more then often have to hit them multiple times. Very cool.
A little jog at the zombie ending in a swing seems to do more damage and a higher chance of one hitting, but there is definitely something about the range, a little farther better than closer. I find standing still also raises the damage.
Pls next time install combat text mod, that way you can clearly see damage values affected by moodles, weapons, or hitting a zombie while on the ground.
Choose a trait that gives an XP bonus for nimble or it takes forever. There is a couple mods that add skill books for weapon and passive skills, which I really like. Best way besides combat it to search every house in aim mode, which is safer anyhow. The more you are in aim mode the higher your nimble skills and the faster you'll move and the less annoying it will be to move in that stance. I have gotten to lvl 5 and it's pretty awesome 👍🏻.
Try customizable zombies mod. It makes a certain percentage of zombies sprinters, shamblers and crawlers. Really changes the game up. Crawlers SUCK! OMG they are dangerous. They can crawl as fast as a shambler and when there are 3-4 of them they drag you down quick when you try to stomp them!
I like to start with axes so I already have a 1-2 lvls in a secondary weapon and maintenance.
does this still work?
@@shivertink3156 yes, you also can fully repair a machete with this logic

C) Multi-hit - althought it's mostly preference and enjoyers vs hardcores
I have seen too many times a player get bitten because they always "assumed" a tree or a wall as a safe spot from incoming threat but forgetting something might be on the otherside as well
That and lone zombies, a lot of players can die to a single lapse of awareness like in the woods or in houses,...
I tell you man, fucking walls have killed me the most in this game, that and small objects with the isometric view sometimes deceive quite a bit with their hitboxes.
oooh good ones!
You make it look like such a cakewalk whereas I literally just bought it like last night and played the tutorial and I'm like, "Oh crap this is going to take a LOT of time to get used to."
I know I'm going to die, a lot, but learning it is part of the experience.
Astute tips as always Lime! I feel you displayed how to stagger out a horde into a conga line clearly and concisely.
Thanks! I was a bit worried that the vid wouldent bee too helpful!
I've found kiting a group in a circle instead of continuously moving back can save you a ton of headache. It keeps extra hordes from getting involved.
Don't forget to stop sneaking when you have a crowd of zombies behind you! you do not gain sneaking exp if you are spotted so you are just gimping yourself by moving slower so the zeds can catch up to you
Unless of course you are still trying to remain at least somewhat quiet then i suppose crouch running would help
Interesting, thanks.
Strength is nice and all, but when that exhaustion kicks in having 8 strength stops mattering real fast :D
Going for a "spear build" from the start can be real interesting, it also makes it easier to start with low fitness/strength in case you want some fun perks!
Us loot whores like strength 😆
I always pick strong as a trait all the time, but I'll try to go the other way newt time I play
He did make a video on that subject, which is still accurate.
Maybe for a future one!
Very interesting about the bat>knife>bat trick. I knew about the mechanics on that, but never thought to use it like that.
Skip to the parts I already know. Pssssh, I’m gonna watch it all because I enjoy every video you send our way, Lime’
I loved the tip abou the cars, thanks my favorite Project Zomboid gamer, already leave my like.
Many thanks!
how can you forget about the insane pick-axe. durable, long range, fast attack rate.
Sheathes are a vibe!
This video is screaming for a yakety sax soundtrack! Awesome job!
Great guide, thanks for posting!
Happy you found it helpful!
Fun fact you can reset the recovery speed per weapon swing, works well on dual handed weapons by spamming space (the shove key) while swinging.
A solid, informative guide. Thumbs up.
#1 tip for Project Zomboid: Watch beginner guides like this on RUclips. ;)
@@xxXXRAPXXxx Yuck, don't say those words in my comment ever again!
You should also mention spears have some of the fastest swing rate out of any weapon plus range.
(also, keen hearing so I don't have to look behind me)
thought I'd share it, because it was hard learned.
About spears one shoting, to one hit kill you must hit the zombie with the tip of the spear, if too close you just swing the spear and have a great chance to not one shot.
And there must be only 1 zombie close to do the animation, then i think its guaranteed
@@dageta7742 Yup otherwise you just swipe
Tomorrow I'm going to make a sandbox game and practice these tips. I'm new to the game and the struggle is very real in terms of combat. Feels like every time I step outside, I'm overwhelmed by them, no matter how good of armor or weapons I have. Hopefully I can get it right with your advice. Thanks for the video.
Can't wait to execute these tips as soon as I stop soft locking myself into attack mode by not releasing the right mouse button, which prevents me from jogging. 👌
Pressing the control key can cause your character to toggle the combat stance, maybe try and unbind that key if you keep having issues
PS: the skill nimble effects how fast you enter and also leave combat stance, it's meant to take time to catch overconfident players off guard and get them killed so maybe train nimble a bit
@@TRUSTeTMguest Thanks for the tip!
Though, control is for me personally an
just-inconvenient-enough button to use.
The tutorial was the only time I used the sprint function so far.
When fighting groups you're always 1 mistake away from death..
My favorite is when I don't pay attention to where my mouse cursor is when going into battle stance so I do a full 360 and get pulled into a horde lol
Thanks! Didn't know that starting to run staggers even those that grab you from behind.
PRO TIP:
try to save some maintainance when using a good weapon via incorporating shoves more often into your attacks.
typically it works really well, and ALWAYS use your foot when attacking downed zombies, if not, ALWAYS aim for the head of the downed zombie. normally spamming LMB on a downed zombie wastes durability, so just walk to the torso, and spam space while trying to stomp their head
about 2 or 3 stomps will kill the zombie
Actually taking a crappy weapon and beating a downed zombie in the legs is a good way to grind maintenance XP. You get xp every time you swing a weapon and it's durability doesn't go down.
@@nerfherder4284 i mean this comment is more of combat-wise, so grinding levels is different
Quick Question: How do you strike a zombie with your weapon when its down? This is a serious question, I only stomp them with my military boots because I CAN'T use my weapons on a downed zombie for some reason. Researched about this, couldn't find anything helpful.
That's odd. Same problem with multiple weapons? Just double checking, but you're still aiming slightly behind them right? It should still work.
@@TheDiner50 This helped me solve the problem. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and insights.
Damn I've been with ya since you had a couple hundred subs and watching your channel grow and your content style change has been super cool.
:), hope to see yah stick around for a bit longer! Appreciate it!
"as long as you have 5 strength" my character who just came out of a comma and her 0 strength
Don't forget cockyness, gets me ever time 🥳
I had a crowbar that i felt like i was using it forever, so i checked its condition. Turns out it was almost done for and still lasted me atleast a week. 10/10 use a crowbar
I believe in crowbar supremacy. The only weapon that can last long enough for your grandchildren to use.
@@annpyingshek4693 never knew it but i am a firm believer now! Either that or a fire axe both are amazing

I appreciate that so much!!
Ducking into a car for quick resting and or getting out on the other horde free side is a good use of vehicle terrain.
No word on all the traits and professions for weapon skills?
What does crouching down in plain sight at 7:50 actually do?

I have clear knox county today cuz i do what you say from tips and tricks

exhaustion? nah, eggjohnstone yeaa
My favorites:
Long blade for hordes on my back.
Short Blunt on my belt for clothes I want.
Short Blade on my belt for stealth kills and when I get tired. (You can still one hit kill single zombies with all the moodles.)
Spears are good for that too.
ooohoh smart
If you wanna have fun with the game, make sure Multi Hit = On
If youre stubborn, determined or masochistic enough, play with it turned off.
It's a risky move but it could turn a 3v1 into a 1v1
Also, can you hold down more than 1 zed at a time? I feel I've held 2 zeds down because another zed basically fell ontop of the 1st.
I don't know about two zeds but zeds standing on another will stop them from getting up. I saw it happen a lot of times.
thanks so much for this!!
You forgot to mention how making Zoidberg noises can help you escape! At least it always seems to work for you 😜
Notice a hand injury will also make you hit like that towel.
I thought his recent advice to use the best weapon you've got instead of saving it to be good advice. That machete is useless once I'm dead😉
@@nerfherder4284 hell yeah. Makes sense.
Solid intro, but I feel like having the time paused does conceal some of the difficulties, and eliminates the trade off between killing quickly and killing safely. Maybe you have killed ten of those twenty zombies, but now your getting thirsty and hungry, and maybe its starting to get very dark out there.
Awesome video, showing to my friends just starting off in this. They die all the time lol
Thank you Sensei!
Great tutorial.
Surprised you didn’t mention the setting for multi hit which I find extremely useful especially being somewhat as a beginner.
Yea, multihit can be a blessin!
I mean if youre not gonna grind it there you aint gonna do it anywhere else
Edit: also the atmost important of all is having a backup of the main weapon nearby and i cant express how important it is !
The Private shares his battle experiences
Hey pr1vate, thanks for the video. I noticed that a few pve servers are switching to pvp. Do you think you could do some guides on how to defend yourself against other players ? How to make yourself and/ or safe house less visible or prepared to survive a little longer against other players ?
"So, when do we learn how to use guns?"
"That's the neat part, you don't."
Guns are very effective when you level up aiming
@@3Runner95 I know they can be viable when you've got the ammo and skills to take down the inevitable hundred-strong horde that the first report turns the twenty zombies you were originally shooting at into, but - at least while you're new - stay the hell away from guns unless it's to draw zombies away from a place you want to loot or you're already bitten and trying to die in a blaze of glory.
Guns are good if you want to clear an area, rather than simply trying to get somewhere. Especially when you start getting tired from swinging.
140 hours in the game and I still learned something,
1:34 is super important, honestly everything else is secondary to having a high level of strength (carry capacity) and fitness.
I'm almost a year late, but this video really helped my friends, and we are on our way to the Ohio mall to clear it out
my character on project zomboid has 3 fitness and 9 strength so long blunts are meant for my chr but not the sledgehammer
Good job
I'm curious, why don't you play with the aim outline on, Lime?
Because hes h a r d
you should start a new project zomboid series if your feeling up to it i think it would be big
I'm with you, but this really is a bone of contention since many would vehemently disagree.
@@nerfherder4284 And many people can be objectively wrong. Since strength offers objectively more benefits than fitness does.
Did you just say you don't like using fences ? That's your whole strategy man.
so for some reason after about a week or two in game my character slows to a snails pace only in combat stance and i have no injuries not sick no moodles completely fine only thing i can theorize is i have cuztomizable backpacks on and i have it pumped all the way up on the weight of the backpacks but im not overweight in my main inventory even with a full backpack like 300 lbs 95 weight reduction still not overweight in my main inventory but maybe when im in combat stance it registers all the weight for a vanilla backpack or something like that?
because im fairly new to the game but already have over a 100 hours into the game and im completely fine when this happens like no sickness no injuries nothing
Some clothes slow you. Check modifiers on them.
I remember the days where tripping in project zomboid is not a thing.. With a max sprinting speed you can run through a huge horde without a scratch in the Opening Hours Challenge xD
Guys we cant use any tips from this video, now that its 2024
Moot point, not "mute point". Great info though!
Crowbar gang please rise
I had literally the best start ever, I spawned with beautiful weapons, a functioning car, hammer, nails, literally got the sauce and I got infected from one dumb bite I got from a bad angle. I snapped and massacred more zombies than I ever have before.
Rip and tear
How long did it take for you to wipe out the horde of 20?
I have a theory that being at your weapons maximum hit limit gives a higher chance to do a crit. Has anyone noticed this or k ow anything about it?
Edit:spelling
It feels like that to me with a few weapons. such as most 2 handed weapons for sure.
@@nerfherder4284 it does feel that way sometimes. Have you played Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds?

how to train nimble ?
Choose a trait that gives an XP bonus for nimble or it takes forever. There is a couple mods that add skill books for weapon and passive skills, which I really like. Best way besides combat it to search every house in aim mode, which is safer anyhow. The more you are in aim mode the higher your nimble skills and the faster you'll move and the less annoying it will be to move in that stance. I have gotten to lvl 5 and it's pretty awesome 👍🏻.
Got to love how the devs keep trying to balance things but they literally have a tool/weapon that is neigh indestructible

Mans killed over 20 zombies in 0 minutes in game time 😂
nice
get nimble to 5 and never worry again
If they do an update where downed zombies are trip hazards(to you and other zombies) the whole strategy of game will change.
I would love that! Zombies tripping over eachother would create such a vibe!
