    Hi everyone! In today’s video, I wanted to sit down and chat w you guys about some things I wish I knew before going to college (aka things I wish someone told me about college). I'm about to be done my junior year, which is insane, and I felt like looking back on my experience thus far and sharing how it was different from what I thought it'd be. Also, with college tours canceled and school potentially being online in the fall, incoming and prospective students probably have a lot of questions that they'd typically ask a tour guide or another student. I wanted to be sort of a virtual reference for y'all. I hope this is helpful :)
    Thank you so much for watching!
    xoxo,
    Han

      Right, we should be more like England to be fair. Around the age of 16 I believe the kids go to 'college' (more or less high school) but they truly go in with trying to find a career path for the students to specialize in. I'm American and don't know much about the process but that they try to prepare the students for a future career path to follow.

      Okay, but some of us are trying to not spend thousands of dollars on a degree that is ultimately not going to get us a career that pays decently because not everyone has Mommy and Daddy's money to fall back on if we don't succeed economically on our own. There are tons of us non-rich people who NEED a good-paying job, not necessarily an extremely well-paying job like a doctor, but a good one. Not everyone is willing to invest all this time and money into something like gender studies that is unlikely to be useful for the rest of our lives. I think that if you're choosing between two options and one pays a little less than the other, then definitely go with the one you're passionate about, but it's honestly so annoying to hear people preach about how money doesn't matter when we live in a capitalist society and, for some of us, money DOES matter. You can't fault someone at all for factoring career prospects into the degree they choose. That's necessary for many Americans.

    • @kelly-2060
      @kelly-2060 3 года назад +28

      the replies to this argument are so so important, more people need to recognize this. there’s absolutely nothing wrong with choosing a career based on financial stability. of course it might not be ideal, but sometimes it’s necessary. passion in a career is a privilege

    • @SM-gt9vg
      @SM-gt9vg 3 года назад +4

      I don't think this is a topic that undergrads should address yet. I felt the same way when I was 18, "Money doesn't matter, I'm going to do what I love." Let me just tell you all that it sucks. $30k salary is NOT as much money as I thought it was when I was 18. I actually don't even get that much after taxes, student loan payments, and everything else that comes out of my check before I even see it. I never realized how much bills cost? Like it's $80/month just to have an internet connection? And at the end of the day, doing what I THOUGHT I loved every day for some company is just draining. I am very restricted creatively because I'm working for someone else. I'm not very happy anymore. I had interest in other majors or topics that I didn't pursue and I regret not picking one that would've made me more money. It was a very expensive mistake to learn and I feel like I can't go back to college now because I'm already so far in debt from the first time.

    • @SM-gt9vg
      @SM-gt9vg 3 года назад +9

      Moral of the story: you may end up hating what you love and if you're going to hate your job anyway, it may as well be one that pays decent wages. That way you can afford to enjoy your time off and go on vacations, rather than being too poor to do anything but sit at home and sulk. Not to say you shouldn't follow your passions, but go ahead and go to school for nursing instead of art so if your painting career fails miserably, you have this really useful degree to fall back on and not an art degree. 🤷‍♀️

    “Don’t pick a major just because it makes money.” Ooofff I went though this! I knew I wanted to psychology cause I saw myself being a councelor and that of my aunt’s experience as a psychologist. However I had family try to take me out of it and that I need to pick a major that gets me a job and money...even if it didn’t make me happy or have passion for it. I choose nursing (I know I want to be in healthcare) and well that didn’t work out great for me (mental breakdown stress and anxiety) and got the heck out and put my foot down and made sure I got back to psychology. I know that I need to get my master’s to be certified and I’m ok with that plus I’m exploring other fields as backups or to see if there are other professions that also interest me since I’ve graduated last year.

Plus you gotta keep a positive attitude (I try to keep this in mind that God has a plan for me and I will get there as long as I also put the work in) even in these current trying times. I believe there will be a demand and need of psychologist in the future given the currently global situation we are in. metal health is very important as much as physical health!

    I know everyone’s saying “don’t do it for the money”
    And this is true to *some point*.
    At the end you if you want to be happy you need a way of earning money. Once you find a stable job THEN you can look into things that actually make you happy. Don’t always concentrate on what make you happy. Unless the thing that makes you happy also make you money. Then you hit the jackpot! But just research and find options that you will learn to love. But idk that’s just me.

      Oshali Rajapakse I think it’s more having a plan on what to do with your degree in my opinion. If you love art for example, then find out what an art degree can get you job wise or find out other mini subjects (I have no idea what their called since I don’t live in America, I want to say minors but I’m not sure?) which could give you more opportunities to give you a good job before applying for college. I think the reason why people may become unemployed after college or uni is because they don’t know what to do with their degree, if some people have a plan before going in I think more people could get a job easier. However, I do agree with you if the person wanted to do a degree in something like drama which is a very hard career to get in. I do also think that having a job through college is something that is good and it makes my life a lot easier as well.

      I personally feel like these two things go hand in hand. You get gratification from your job if you’re making substantial income which adds to your enjoyment. I feel like you’re less likely to enjoy something if you feel like you’re not receiving adequate reward or something to show for your hard work.

You still have time to figure out all the details and such but having an apartment with friends was/has been a great experience for me and home is only a drive away! i can relate SO HARD. i wanted to do nursing so bad, but literally my high school advisor told me that i wasn't smart enough to get into the nursing program in my hometown and that nursing was so much worse than PA or med school so i should apply to my state school and do PA or MD for the money and status. so i did that, AND I WAS MISERABLE. went home every weekend, missed my family so much, hated my classes, everything was terrible. so i decided to try and transfer into the original nursing program that i "wasn't good enough to get into" and i got in. now im living in an apartment with my boyfriend 10 minutes away from my parents and commuting to an amazing nursing program and I LOVE IT and im so unbelievably happy.
    moral of the story: LISTEN TO HANNAH, if you are passionate about something GO FOR IT, don't listen to what other people say only you know what you are capable of, and if you think you can do it then YOU CAN DO IT. you got this :)

This is such a good perspective, I feel like at 17 (when I was choosing my university degree) I did not have the hindsight to really know what I wanted to do. I still don't know if I chose right, and it's honestly really hard to say. But yeah :) My degree ended up being pretty fulfilling but I still wonder what my life would look like if I did something else.

    I’m about to finish my junior year of college too but in Mexico and sadly colleges and universities here are WAY different than they are in the states, I mean college for us is just like attending high school, almost everyone stays in their hometown and the “living in campus” thing does not exist, also credits are managed differently here cause we do have the credit here, but our “classplan” is put by the school and we have to take the classes we were told we were gonna have at the beginning of the career, also we are not that passionate about our school sports cause the sports teams barely exist. There are a lot of differences but the biggest one I think is the money you pay for college, here’s very very cheap compared to USA.

I was constantly told I shouldn't bother majoring in something I liked, because I would eventually hate whatever job I ended up doing after working for a while and jobs are there just to make money anyway. I was miserable and had no friends during my first years and made the decision to transfer programs spring semester of my sophomore year. Now I actually enjoy what I'm doing and have a few friends that I've met in the past year and a half. Just do what you care about in the first place and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You will just end up wishing you had listened to yourself sooner and regret not being able to know the people in your program as long as you could have (especially when a global pandemic occurs and you miss out on a whole semester of experiences, ~sad Class of 2020 alert~). I never attended a single football game or party, it just wasn't for me, but I finally figured out what I wanted to do with my life and put my passion into that. I was also fortunate enough to meet a few wonderful people along the way.

    really want a part 2 to this 😭 thanks for being so authentic about your experience I'm going through applying for college and the things you covered literally are some of my struggles 😥 the thought of needing to choose a major which will make a great fortune burdens me a lot and it's so comforting to hear you talk about it 😌 loved these videos they're so motivating and inspirational 😚

    hearing you talk about your process changing your major i related SO HARD i was in the exact same position last year and could not find it in me to apply for any internships for my major because i hated it so much and at the same time i thought i was dumb and stupid for not having the passion those around me had for the major but in reality its because i was just trying to make everyone else happy and not doing what i really wanted to do wow thank you for describing that feeling so well in your video i truly wish i had this video when i was entering college!

    Thank u for making this video. I'm glad that someone pointed out that we have to follow our passion rather than choose the major that we don't enjoyed it.

    I really enjoy listening to you talk about your college experience bc its not "typical" but at the same time, SO many students go thru the same things. Changing majors, schools, and being afraid of the future is so common. Im going into my senior year too, good luck!!

    Never, NEVER have I watched a more accurate and perfect video! Everything you said (except the partying, because I actually did that a bit in my first semester) was/is me right now. I‘m just in my second semester and I love the way, my major could go, but right now, I don‘t understand anything and I already failed my first test last semester. I also have those feelings you mentioned about homesickness and the „I-don‘t-want-to-go-back-to-college“-feeling. It‘s hard. But because of your video, I think I will change my major next semester to something, that includes what I love about my major right now, but extends it with something I also love. So thank you 😁
    And at the end: I‘M A REAL ONE 😎🥳

    I just started college 2 months ago, and I'm so grateful that I did my research about colleges, career, and everything. I'm studying something that I like and enjoy. But still, a video like this would have help me a year ago when I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life. And now your videos are actually helping me to at least finish this year.
    By they way: I'M A REAL ONE!

    It makes me feel a bit better to hear this

    Watching your video was a real eye opener. Im just a freshman and having panic attacks weekly and an overwhelming feeling to jump off of a cliff everytime I get stressed because I don't know what I'm doing. My heart was so set on one thing and when I realized that thing isn't going to work out for me I have no clue what my purpose is there. I get dizzy and a bunch of headaches because of it. But I think I want to be something else. Now its apparent that I don't want to be at that school period. Im also not making friends and failing academically which is probably because I don't feel passionate about what Im doing. Everyone expects so much and what I want to do doesn't pay that good either. But your advice really helps and I think I know what decision Im going to make from here onward. Im just glad im not the only one who feels like this.

    this was such an uplifting video! I'm a senior in college as well and never have I heard someone have such a similar experience w the social aspects of college as what you talked about in your video. it was nice to hear that someone else had similar experiences!
