I think for functional reasons, a ban would be healthy. But legally too dubious to justify. If american citizens wish to give their personal data away to a foreign representative, they are free to do so. Attempting to block tiktok is just infringing on citizen's freedom to contract.
@@kendivedmakarig215 of course - and blocking tiktok on government devices has already been done for that reason. What private citizens do with their personal data on their personal devices is not a legitimate concern for national security. Otherwise all social media should be banned.

Just to be very very clear here: I don't like tik tok. I don't use tik tok. I wish tik tok would disappear already, it's a shit app and I think the chinese government is an abomination against human rights. But! I don't think the ban is unconstitutional, for the same reason a social media site can ban you from it. They aren't public domain (or whatever the right wording is), so it should be treated as any other company, cause that's what it is
There's already a long list of Chinese companies banned in the US for multiple reasons, national security being one of them. Those are in no way unconstitutional, and the fact that people are trying to give TikTok this special treatment because "it's super popular" or "other apps also steal your data" is genuinely scary
Wasn't huawei among those companies that go banned?
@@Windermed yes. I found some sources saying Trump did it in 2019, but most are saying Biden did it November 2022, so that's when I'd say it happened

I think the best course of action is to not let international corporations sell your data
This would be a blessing. I've seen too many relationships fall apart because of TikTok trends about emotionally manipulating your partners. It's more than just data breaching. TikTok's ability to affect entire social groups here in the United States feels on purpose.
Completely agree, however this is not the right way to go about it, granting the government the power to ban media sources is an awful idea.
It definitely is. Over there, Tik tok is educational, over here it tells you to steal from your school
@@letgomyleghoe582 TikTok is a disease. It needs to be banned. And besides, the government profits from these media sites, so they won't go on a banning spree. Hell, India banned TikTok and it has done wonders for them.
yeah except giving the government that power to do so is definitely not the way..the main problem are the people here...unless they correct themselves it will not matter...not if they can prove a total security risk of important information and so on...that could warrant a legal ban without any real issue and they sort of have that or at least the premise in which case if they can prove that to be the full case sure thing let them..until that is resolved and corrected then allow it back.

I think for functional reasons, a ban would be healthy. But legally too dubious to justify. If american citizens wish to give their personal data away to a foreign representative, they are free to do so. Attempting to block tiktok is just infringing on citizen's freedom to contract.
The Gov't can intervene if it is for national security.
@@kendivedmakarig215 of course - and blocking tiktok on government devices has already been done for that reason. What private citizens do with their personal data on their personal devices is not a legitimate concern for national security. Otherwise all social media should be banned.
@@Night_Hawk_475 Better read the terms and conditions of tiktok and you will know the reason why the Gov't ban tiktok.

@@cgmason7568 you stated what it is, not what law it breaks. I don't disagree that it's tied to china heavily, but there's no "we can ban american citizens from using software written in china" law.
Google is facilitating the distribution of the application, what gives the american government the legally-correct ability to censor what google can or cannot allow on it's app store?
Just to be very very clear here: I don't like tik tok. I don't use tik tok. I wish tik tok would disappear already, it's a shit app and I think the chinese government is an abomination against human rights. But! I also think that the US government should have legal standing before taking action. This is a first ammendment / personal freedom issue. If an american citizen wishes to download an app that will spy on them they should know it will do that, warning them is fair, but they should not be forced against their will to not use it. If the government had such a power, what else could they use it on? I do not encourage eroding everybody's rights away slowly just because I want to spite a shitty mobile app a little bit more.
Honestly politics aside. Tiktok can just go away.
It doesn't just threaten the constitution, it threatens a significant portion of the internet's freedom
i don’t think spying is protected speech. it’s called espionage. we have rules for this, just none that apply
to the internet. we need to figure this out while maintaining free speech.
Banning an app doesn’t ban someone’s right to media since there are many more social media platforms
I don’t think the people replying to you understand legal precedents and the impact they have on future rulings.
