Most Christian religions get the doctrine of salvation wrong. We are saved by grace through faith as Paul declares in Ephesians 2:8-9. James makes it very clear in chapters 1-3 of the book of James that faith without works is dead. Works don't save us as we cannot earn our way to heaven, it's impossible! We are all sinners and have broken God's commandments. Only through the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ can we be saved. Works don't save us but they do demonstrate our faith and love for God. Those who don't continue in good works won't receive salvation in God's kingdom. Jesus taught this over and over again in the four Gospels. The life of Jesus was filled with good works and we are commanded to keep them and to pick up our cross and follow the Savior.
I would estimate that 90% or more of the confusion with the doctrine of salvation comes from the writings of Paul. Peter declared this about Paul's writings, "As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction."
The biggest disconnect is understanding what actually saves us, the grace of God, and what qualifies us for salvation in God's kingdom. The two are confused beyond all belief!
The doctrine of salvation is possibly the most misunderstood doctrine in the bible. This is intentional as Satan does everything in his power to keep us from God/Jesus Christ. Satan's main objective is keeping us from salvation in God's kingdom. Once you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, be faithful and follow in the Savior's path for every day you draw breath!
