  • Want to move FASTER round the Badminton court?
In this LIVE lesson we take Leon through some exercises to help improve his speed and how he can utilise this speed on court and become more of a threat.

One piece of advise for Leon (if he'll take it), is the left arm position should be used to counterweight and balance his shots (especially sides and front shots), as well as generate more power in his overhead. It sort of just stays there, bent & close to the body, and looks quite unnatural. Similarly, he's also not stretching his chest out to allow full contraction, similar to how Axelsen references himself like a bow in his smash tutorial vid.
    Just my opinion though.

Very interesting observation as we talk to Leon about trying to generate more power overhead, we also use Victor a lot as a reference.
Agree he needs to open out more whilst remaining compact, sometimes he can be a little long with his prep.

This works great…. But what happens if the player doesn’t block it to the net but hit a strong high return?

Good question. It’s not to say they wouldn’t be able to hit the next shot to the back but it’s a harder shot to play.
It also has the longest flight time, so even if you press forward you do have more time to get back as the shuttle is in the air longer. It’s sometimes about playing the percentages and looking for the most likely reply from your opponent.

Thanks for the vid sir, another good one.
A suggestion: possible to get shock-absorbing material for the tripod? The video shake every time person land foot

Looking at the times when Leon really attacked the net after his smash it seems to be when he moves quicker at the start and gets behind the shuttle for his smash so that he is jumping forward into the shot. At other times he's jumping backwards and smashing and then doesn't have momentum with him to charge the net. What is the best shot choice then if you are jumping backwards to take the shuttle? Is it still a smash and follow or should it be something different? P.S. Really enjoying your videos and the in depth lesson progressions. Nice work.

Thanks very much taking the time to comment. Some great points there.
It sometimes depends on the lift height and depth that may play a part in what shot you choose to play. It’s not to say you can’t smash when you use the jump out movement but may value accuracy higher than power to make sure you are moving the opponent out wide.
You also could still treat the smash as a building shot rather than a high pressure shot.
The key is whatever the movement to the rear court a smash is a fast short that isn’t on the air very long, this means if it comes back you need to be confident you can get to the next shot, if not, a smash probably isn’t the right shot.
Sorry for the wordy reply but we hope that makes sense, if you have any further questions please let us know.
Thanks for the positive feedback and really pleased you are enjoying the content.
