  • Taiyaki is a popular street food in Japan. It is now getting popular in the US too. These tasty pancakes are perfect for your kids breakfast and after school snacks. Not only they are cute, but also low in fat and are filled with red bean paste. This is my daughter’s favorite treat. If you have kids at home, I am sure they will like it too.💕

    Ingredients (6-8 pancakes)
    1 cup (140 g) all-purpose flour
    1 tablespoon sugar
    2 tsp (16 g) baking powder
    ½ tsp salt
    1 small egg
    ½ cup (4 oz or 118ml) milk
½ cup (4 oz or 118 ml) water
1 teaspoon vegetable oil for brushing the pan
Sweetened red bean paste/ milk chocolate bar/ Nutella (or your favorite fillings)
    1. In a clean bowl, add the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder, salt) and stir.
    2. Add egg, liquid (milk and water) and whisk until combined.
    3. Heat the Taiyaki pan at the stove at low heat for 1-2 minutes each side. This is to warm up the pan.
    4. Open the pan and grease both the upper and lower fish molds with very light coating of vegetable oil.
    5. Pour the batter into one side of the fish mold until half full. Add 1 tablespoon of red bean paste or chocolate bar in the center. Fill up the rest of the mold with batter.
    6. Close the pan and cook each side for about 1 minute on medium heat (or 2 minutes on low heat). Please note each pan is different. You will need to experiment with the pan and burner to find the right amount of time to cook each side until it is evenly browned.
    7. Remove the pancakes from the pan and serve. Taiyaki is best served when warm and fresh from the stove. Leftovers can be refrigerated and microwaved the next day.
