Beautifully told/narrated. I totally agree with the message. As a secular Arab Muslim, I do take pride in what we have contributed. However, we must move on. We cannot dwell on our glorious past and keep reminding the world of what we have accomplished. I know we have immense intellect, history, background, and education to leverage. Our main obstacle is our leadership. Unfortunately, we find most of our prominent intellectuals, scientists, physicians, academics, thinkers, writers, etc. living in the West, where they are free to speak out and develop. If only 20% or less of our intellectual capital returns to the region, we will do wonders. However, unfortunately, and much to my dismay/chagrin, I doubt this will take place in my lifetime.

Alhamdulilah, The Muslims, not only in Arabia, but even as far as Spain have been some of the best Muslim inventors, thinkers, and writers of poetry and works of science. The Muslims had the best empire with the greatest things of freedom of religion and freedom of the pursuit of knowledge. All from God!! MashaAllah!

Thank you. A bit of correction. It's not the Arabs but the Muslims from Central Asia, Anatolia, the Middle East, Africa, all the way to Iberia. They were of multi-ethic background. In fact, all of the scholars cited in the video were Persian Muslims. Baghdad was administered, managed and cultivated not only by Arabs but by Persians, Copts and Greek speaking scholars.
Those in the video are Arabs and Arabized Turks, not Persians Most scholars are Arabs, even non-Arabs. Their culture and language are Arab and they are taught in Arab universities Like claiming that the Greek scholars of Alexandria are not Greeks!!

I'm Arab my self but it wasn't the Arabs who did this only there were Persians, Egyptians Kurds and other who helped us in general Muslims and others religious groups.

In historical terms, scientific inquiry generally did not meet the same opposition from the religious establishment in the world of Islam that was prevalent in medieval Christendom. In fact, science often worked in tandem, or in support of religious ritual, such as the hajj or the proper prayer times.

Likewise, the Umayyad caliphs in Andalusia took care of scholars and supported them financially and scientifically until Andalusia became a beacon for seeking knowledge in Europe at that time. That scientific movement in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad was not the only one, but we saw the influence of the University of Al-Qarawiyyin and the scientific movement in Andalusia, all of which found support from the founders of those scientific and cultural centers of the Quraish. When leaders are interested in scientific research, translation of science, openness to other civilizations, and support for innovators and inventors, we will see progress and prosperity That period was similar to what America was doing in terms of attracting international students, educating them, embracing the distinguished among them, and supporting them in research centers until they became a landmark in the civilizational progress of America.

It surprised me how little my audience of educated Arab and Muslim students (and their professors) knew about this academic heritage.
@@jonathanlyons7058 The idea of establishing KAUST University, which King Abdullah ordered to build, is an attempt to emulate the role of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad and the Arabs do not forget their luminous history. One of the most beautiful scientific arts among Arab scholars is that they used to organize Arabic poems in medicine, chemistry, astronomy, etc.. so that it would be easier to memorize these sciences and review them for students. For example, Ibn Al-Tufail wrote a poem (Arjoza) in diagnosing diseases, and Khalid bin Yazid bin Muawiyah wrote poems in Chemistry, etc.. Among the Arab scientists who excelled in explaining modern sciences in poetic systems. This topic deserves a special episode. Perhaps no civilization has done this before or after the Arabs.

there is an idiom in Turkish which is "Do not presume that every man with a beard would be your grandfather" The thumbnail that you used for this video is an Ottoman miniature image from Şehinşehname which was dedicated to Murad III. by Seyyid Lokman who was a Ottoman-Turkic author who could speak Ottoman Turkish and Persian. I don't mean to sound rude but I believe that to be able to understand any potential transformation of Western Civilization by Arabs, you need be qualified enough to distinguish what is Ottoman or what is Persian or Arabic.

I think the more accurate title would be 'HOW MUSLIM TRANSFORMED WESTERN CIVILIZATION' Then it would rightfully include everyone's contributions from arabs, Persians and turks.
I am well aware of this point of view and acknowledge that it has some merit. In the bigger picture, virtually all scholar work that forms the basis for my thesis was in fact written in Arabic, regardless of the ethnicity, faith, or locale of its author. Arabic was the lingua franca of learned discourse throughout this period. In the book, I tell of one Persian author who refused to publish his own work in Farsi and translated into Arabic because he felt the latter was a more precise language for science and philosophy. I hope you'll check it out.
Well, the discussion seems to going some other direction but in the light of this last comment I must say that I openly object your methodology If the research question is based on the argumentation of some scholar refusing publish in Farsi because he/she thought that Arabic was a more precise language for science and philosophy. This is totally a super controversial hypothesis which obviously neglect the political and historical aspects of a dominating language. Moreover, Arabic being lingua franca, as you say, through that period doesn't bring a total legitimacy for your research question which basically I gather that the justification of Arabs transformation on Western civilization is based on the books were written in Arabic. The whole narrative sounds incomplete to me. I'd love to check out the book though.
Ibn Sina, commonly known in the West as Avicenna, was a Persian polymath who is regarded as one of the most significant physicians, astronomers, philosophers, and writers of the Islamic Golden Age, and the father of early modern medicine.
The problem is western countries took many significant discoveries from the middle east and till this day they r developing those ideas more and more. But Muslims couldn't finish those ideas that they started. I mean we Muslims built a developed world but later we destroyed everything by fighting among ourselves
Worth adding that great empires and great civilizations have a finite lifespan. It is hard to attribute any one specific cause of decline. What's interesting to me is the way in which the natural decline of the great Islamic empires is often blamed on some perceived flaw, while other formerly great powers are allowed to slip away.
We didn't fight each other but when the ottoman khilapha lost the first world war around 1919 , the West sat us apart and made so many countries and they forced nationalism yeah..
Those who don’t appreciate someone’s contribution while benefiting from it or building upon it are simply ungrateful. No one has monopoly in science and technology and architecture. European should not think they have the monopoly in science and they should appreciate what other helped shape science and technology

I will add to that also that Muslim civilization was the first ever civilization that did not destroy earlier civilizations knowledge's and intellectual achievements. The oldest we have studied in Mathematics goes back to Greek era "I.E. Pythagorean Theorem" from year 550 BC, but Chinese civilization had build the Great Wall in 8th century BC which meant they had advanced math and engineering techniques before the Pythagorean time. These techniques and intellectual properties was vanished by other civilization when they defeated the Chinese. before Islam, the winners used to burn all properties of the looser including books and knowledge. Same applies to the Old Egyptians techniques used in building the Pyramids.
Yes, as we show in the video timeline, there was an additive process of what might be called World Civilization. Good point. As I have shown in one of my other books, Islam Through Western Eyes, the West has gone out of its way to obscure many of these influences and claimed "science" as its unique product.
Exaggeration of many things. Even the Islamic golden age back then learning many from the western Greeks and Roman civilizations among others, that they conquered (especially Byzantine and Egypt). Also, 'golden age' is a name, the tech progress remain old medieval standard where information and communication as well as focus on tech developments are miniscule compared to post industrialization era in the west, where communication becomes more rapid and tech development focus on science progresses hundred-fold, that nearly every modern aspect of our modern civilization, be it from one modern object to the next, or even systems (modern farming systems for example), follow the western inventions. To add, even if you cherrypick specific field that is promoted as 'islamic golden age invention' like algebra, it actually has its prototype in Babylonia civilization, and even then is not the modern algebra we use today in our modern application. This is like saying Islamic golden age invent our watches and clock, solely because there's a part where an Arab muslim use the first geared clock. While in fact clock has been used long before Mohammed even born in Greek, Egyptian civilizations, solely because he is a Muslim and it was the first geared clock suddenly Muslims claim they invent clock and watches somehow. Ibn khalaf invent the first geared clock, not the one we use today just like the Greek Egyptian before Islam even exist already use water clock. Then Huygens from Dutch invent the first pendulum clock, far better performing errored only 1 minute then the later version only by 10 seconds. Then developments go from there with so many inventors on clocks and watches that we now have our modern watches and clocks. But then again, Muslims always exaggerate and cherrypick, falsely promoting as if they invent the clock solely from ibn khalaf just like many other self-claim 'islamic inventions' which is totally false. An invention, just like the clock, takes many developers and Inventors to make it as it is today, the first man to use the wheel doesn't make him the inventor of our modern cars, not even the tired only as it takes more than just using rounded objects as wheel to make them applicable in our modern cars today. Last but not least, the biggest mistake: none of those scholars from medieval islamic golden age learn them from Islam. Did algebra was taught in the Qur'an? Or Hadith? Nope. Was the geared clock learned from the Qur'an? Nope. There are hundreds-fold western inventors who are Christians, yet I don't see them claiming the nearly whole modern civilization or even specific Inventions are found by Christianity, for this is science. Ironically I very frequently see Muslims with inferiority complex somehow about inventions of techs so often scream the loudest coining the religion of Islam to scientific inventions, as if Islam finds them, which is not the case. This video is not surprising considering it's a channel run by a group that has a track record of promoting Islam to English speaking - mostly western countries audience under the disquise of 'educating other religion and cultures' to them. Basically a islamic-leaning propaganda channel. So not surprising at all
This is not Arabs or Islamic world. This is all about Persian or Iranian high tech/ culture society occupied with Arabs. If you look closely you will see all scientists and Engineers are Persian or Iranian and all these technologies were in Iran before Arab invasion.

We are a point that has been reached by putting stone on stone. It is not possible for anyone to develop from a non-existing foundation. It's important to note that an Arab according to the Islamic tradition is someone who's tongue is Arabic as opposed to an ethnic group. Arabi was the lingua franca then. Many Persian scholars had great contributions, including in Arabic language. A prophetic narration mentions that if knowledge was to be found in the Pleiades (open star cluster containing), a person or persons from the sons of Persia would acquire it. Let's clarify most of so called muslim or arab scholars are Iranian , Khawrazmi father of math, algebra and Persian numbers which was born greater Khorasan in city of Khawrazm خوارزمی wrote his books in arabic or most other scholars like Tabari, Farabi, Tousi, Razi, Abu ali Sina, Ghazzali... and European translated their books as Arab or Muslim not knowing the full biography. No one categorizes Edison, Pascal and Eeinstien as christian or Jewish scientists the are identified by their country and heritage yet we see our heritage are hijacked under religious tag and as Arab. Non of the scientists where arabs from Jaziratol-arab, or Arabia. Even the art work shown on 2:32 of this clip is a Persian or Farsi poam and miniature painting not Arabic. I have nothing against arab brothers but we should learn and analyze the history based on facts not politics, everyone's cultural heritage must be acknowledged and respected.
Classical Islam was not opposed to the findings of science. In fact, many leading scholars were also religious experts. And religion drew on scientific findings to support and refine ritual, such as the hajj. Of course, there were exceptions, but nothing on the scale of medieval Christian opposition to scientific advance.

I'm Arab my self but it wasn't the Arabs who did this only there were Persians, Egyptians Kurds and other who helped us in general Muslims and others religious groups.

Insha Allah, if only we could bring back these days, Knowledge and intellect is mentioned time and again in the Qur'an and was highly valued by our prophet Muhammad PBUH, if us Muslims, me included, would strive to learn and perfect current knowledge, we would be leagues better than now just eating shawarma lol.
This is an interesting and important point. In historical terms, scientific inquiry generally did not meet the same opposition from the religious establishment in the world of Islam that was prevalent in medieval Christendom. In fact, science often worked in tandem, or in support of religious ritual, such as the hajj or the proper prayer times.
There was a time when Arab and Persians were king in science and philosophy And Turks ruled and conquer most of Europe
Their Economy was strong , they were ahead of rest of the world in science and technology, their military was strong and beautiful culture living peacefully with jews and Christian and baghdad was city of peace of prosperity Muslim civilization were flourishing that time

The role of Fatima al-Fihri, the granddaughter of Uqba bin Nafi al-Qurashi, played a role in the establishment of the University of Al-Qarawiyyin, the first university in the world, which created a cultural and scientific movement in the Maghreb as well.
Likewise, the Umayyad caliphs in Andalusia took care of scholars and supported them financially and scientifically until Andalusia became a beacon for seeking knowledge in Europe at that time.

All the work stated in this video was done by iranian scholars. Arabs made up a very small minority of scholars.

It surprised me how little my audience of educated Arab and Muslim students (and their professors) knew about this academic heritage.

One of the most beautiful scientific arts among Arab scholars is that they used to organize Arabic poems in medicine, chemistry, astronomy, etc.. so that it would be easier to memorize these sciences and review them for students. For example, Ibn Al-Tufail wrote a poem (Arjoza) in diagnosing diseases, and Khalid bin Yazid bin Muawiyah wrote poems in Chemistry, etc.. Among the Arab scientists who excelled in explaining modern sciences in poetic systems. This topic deserves a special episode. Perhaps no civilization has done this before or after the Arabs.

there is an idiom in Turkish which is "Do not presume that every man with a beard would be your grandfather" The thumbnail that you used for this video is an Ottoman miniature image from Şehinşehname which was dedicated to Murad III. by Seyyid Lokman who was a Ottoman-Turkic author who could speak Ottoman Turkish and Persian. I don't mean to sound rude but I believe that to be able to understand any potential transformation of Western Civilization by Arabs, you need be qualified enough to distinguish what is Ottoman or what is Persian or Arabic.

I am well aware of this point of view and acknowledge that it has some merit. In the bigger picture, virtually all scholar work that forms the basis for my thesis was in fact written in Arabic, regardless of the ethnicity, faith, or locale of its author. Arabic was the lingua franca of learned discourse throughout this period. In the book, I tell of one Persian author who refused to publish his own work in Farsi and translated into Arabic because he felt the latter was a more precise language for science and philosophy. I hope you'll check it out.
Well, the discussion seems to going some other direction but in the light of this last comment I must say that I openly object your methodology If the research question is based on the argumentation of some scholar refusing publish in Farsi because he/she thought that Arabic was a more precise language for science and philosophy. This is totally a super controversial hypothesis which obviously neglect the political and historical aspects of a dominating language. Moreover, Arabic being lingua franca, as you say, through that period doesn't bring a total legitimacy for your research question which basically I gather that the justification of Arabs transformation on Western civilization is based on the books were written in Arabic. The whole narrative sounds incomplete to me. I'd love to check out the book though.

The problem is western countries took many significant discoveries from the middle east and till this day they r developing those ideas more and more. But Muslims couldn't finish those ideas that they started. I mean we Muslims built a developed world but later we destroyed everything by fighting among ourselves
Worth adding that great empires and great civilizations have a finite lifespan. It is hard to attribute any one specific cause of decline. What's interesting to me is the way in which the natural decline of the great Islamic empires is often blamed on some perceived flaw, while other formerly great powers are allowed to slip away.
We didn't fight each other but when the ottoman khilapha lost the first world war around 1919 , the West sat us apart and made so many countries and they forced nationalism yeah..

I will add to that also that Muslim civilization was the first ever civilization that did not destroy earlier civilizations knowledge's and intellectual achievements. The oldest we have studied in Mathematics goes back to Greek era "I.E. Pythagorean Theorem" from year 550 BC, but Chinese civilization had build the Great Wall in 8th century BC which meant they had advanced math and engineering techniques before the Pythagorean time. These techniques and intellectual properties was vanished by other civilization when they defeated the Chinese. before Islam, the winners used to burn all properties of the looser including books and knowledge. Same applies to the Old Egyptians techniques used in building the Pyramids.
Yes, as we show in the video timeline, there was an additive process of what might be called World Civilization. Good point. As I have shown in one of my other books, Islam Through Western Eyes, the West has gone out of its way to obscure many of these influences and claimed "science" as its unique product.

Exaggeration of many things.
Even the Islamic golden age back then learning many from the western Greeks and Roman civilizations among others, that they conquered (especially Byzantine and Egypt).
Also, 'golden age' is a name, the tech progress remain old medieval standard where information and communication as well as focus on tech developments are miniscule compared to post industrialization era in the west, where communication becomes more rapid and tech development focus on science progresses hundred-fold, that nearly every modern aspect of our modern civilization, be it from one modern object to the next, or even systems (modern farming systems for example), follow the western inventions.
To add, even if you cherrypick specific field that is promoted as 'islamic golden age invention' like algebra, it actually has its prototype in Babylonia civilization, and even then is not the modern algebra we use today in our modern application. This is like saying Islamic golden age invent our watches and clock, solely because there's a part where an Arab muslim use the first geared clock.
While in fact clock has been used long before Mohammed even born in Greek, Egyptian civilizations, solely because he is a Muslim and it was the first geared clock suddenly Muslims claim they invent clock and watches somehow.
Ibn khalaf invent the first geared clock, not the one we use today just like the Greek Egyptian before Islam even exist already use water clock. Then Huygens from Dutch invent the first pendulum clock, far better performing errored only 1 minute then the later version only by 10 seconds. Then developments go from there with so many inventors on clocks and watches that we now have our modern watches and clocks.
But then again, Muslims always exaggerate and cherrypick, falsely promoting as if they invent the clock solely from ibn khalaf just like many other self-claim 'islamic inventions' which is totally false.
An invention, just like the clock, takes many developers and Inventors to make it as it is today, the first man to use the wheel doesn't make him the inventor of our modern cars, not even the tired only as it takes more than just using rounded objects as wheel to make them applicable in our modern cars today.
Last but not least, the biggest mistake: none of those scholars from medieval islamic golden age learn them from Islam. Did algebra was taught in the Qur'an? Or Hadith? Nope. Was the geared clock learned from the Qur'an? Nope. There are hundreds-fold western inventors who are Christians, yet I don't see them claiming the nearly whole modern civilization or even specific Inventions are found by Christianity, for this is science. Ironically I very frequently see Muslims with inferiority complex somehow about inventions of techs so often scream the loudest coining the religion of Islam to scientific inventions, as if Islam finds them, which is not the case.

We are a point that has been reached by putting stone on stone. It is not possible for anyone to develop from a non-existing foundation. It's important to note that an Arab according to the Islamic tradition is someone who's tongue is Arabic as opposed to an ethnic group. Arabi was the lingua franca then. Many Persian scholars had great contributions, including in Arabic language. A prophetic narration mentions that if knowledge was to be found in the Pleiades (open star cluster containing), a person or persons from the sons of Persia would acquire it. By Arabs, the author meant Muslims, but he had to use Arabs in the title. We hope that you read his book and feel free to email the author.

Let's clarify most of so called muslim or arab scholars are Iranian , Khawrazmi father of math, algebra and Persian numbers which was born greater Khorasan in city of Khawrazm خوارزمی wrote his books in arabic or most other scholars like Tabari, Farabi, Tousi, Razi, Abu ali Sina, Ghazzali... and European translated their books as Arab or Muslim not knowing the full biography. No one categorizes Edison, Pascal and Eeinstien as christian or Jewish scientists the are identified by their country and heritage yet we see our heritage are hijacked under religious tag and as Arab. Non of the scientists where arabs from Jaziratol-arab, or Arabia. Even the art work shown on 2:32 of this clip is a Persian or Farsi poam and miniature painting not Arabic. I have nothing against arab brothers but we should learn and analyze the history based on facts not politics, everyone's cultural heritage must be acknowledged and respected.

Could you please define “Islamic” science? How did Islam contribute to any science while there are many scientific falsehoods in Islamic books?
Classical Islam was not opposed to the findings of science. In fact, many leading scholars were also religious experts. And religion drew on scientific findings to support and refine ritual, such as the hajj. Of course, there were exceptions, but nothing on the scale of medieval Christian opposition to scientific advance.
