In this video, Diana Darke, author of the award-winning book, Stealing from the Saracens: How Islamic Architecture Shaped Europe, takes you on a quick architectural journey to see how architectural styles and ideas passed from vibrant Middle Eastern centers, such as Damascus, Baghdad, and Cairo, and entered Europe via gateways including Muslim Spain, Sicily, and Venice through the movement of pilgrims, bishops, merchants, and medieval Crusaders. It’s a rich tale of cultural exchange that will help you see some of Europe’s - and even America’s - iconic landmarks with new eyes.
Diana Darke is a Middle East cultural expert with special focus on Syria. With degrees in Arabic from Oxford University and in Islamic Art & Architecture from SOAS, London, she has spent over 30 years specializing in the region, working for both government and commercial sectors.
She is frequently invited to speak at international events and media networks, such as the BBC, PBS, TRT, Al-Jazeera, and France24. Her work on Syria has been published by the BBC website, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, and The Financial Times. She is a Non-Resident Scholar at Washington’s think-tank MEI (the Middle East Institute).
Diana is also the author of the highly acclaimed My House in Damascus: An Inside View of the Syrian Crisis (2016), The Merchant of Syria (2018), and The Last Sanctuary in Aleppo (2019).
Special thanks to the Foundation for Intelligent Giving and the Barrington Peace Forum for their support.

@Galatians 5:1 We have freedom now If it's not hidden, then why teach students about "gothic" and "roman" architecture without the inspiration behind those? Why lie that Goths invented the Gothic architecture??
The Romans called Muslims Saracens, meaning thieves. What's the agenda behind that??

@@RS-le7yd You missed the whole point of the video. The Muslims were inspired by the Romans and it came full circle. The Gothic style is still a european style, as it is not 100% the same as Islamic structures from which it took inspiration from. This video point out how the Muslims took from various different already settled styles and made their own, one of which was Bizantine structrures. Same thing happens with the european Gothic style.

It is the first time that I discovered that the word "Sarazin" or "Saracin" is in fact only a transformation of "Sarakin" which is the transcription of the Arabic word meaning "thieves". As is the case with the word Assassin which means "Men of the grass" (hashish).

Saracens is a Crusader reference for Levantine Muslims, and is literally derived from the phrase "Sara('s) sons"/Sara sens = "Saracens", i.e. "the sons of Sara". Sara was the mother of Ishaq ("Isaac"). "Isaac" was the second son of the Prophet Abraham. The Israelites trace their lineage to "Isaac". After the defeat of Byzantium by the Muslims, vast numbers of Christian Israelites (and Jewish Israelites) accepted Islam. The Palestinians and other Levantine people were thus referred to as "Saracens" by the medieval Crusaders.

I am a Muslim and I disagree, with the idea that Europeans copied Muslim architecture it's not true, both Muslims and European Christians were inspired by the Greeco-Roman architecture, and the Greeco-Roman architecture was inspired by other ancient civilizations from The Mediterranean and the Medil east like ancient Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Assyrians..., and being inspired by the same source leads to many similarities that's all.

@@souravakter8029 She said the same thing at the beginning of the video 2:18, The Truth is clear Greeco-Roman Architecture was all over Western Europe, North Africa, and The Levant, you can still find Roman ruins and sites in the Muslim world and some of them are more preserved than many sites in Europe like the site of Timgad or Damjamila in Algeria, Volubilis in Morocco, and the rest that is less preserved in Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and there is a lot in Turkey too. Both Muslims and Christians were inspired by Roman Architecture and that is what justifies the similarity, Arabs went out of Arabia with no Architecture of their own they took from the civilizations that they defeated like the Persians and Byzantine Romans.

The Muslim Arab conquerors of Persia (today’s Iran) had been ignorant Bedouins from the desert with a level of civilization well below that of the Zoroastrian Persian Empire. They had been as astonished by the cultural level of the Zoroastrian Persians as they had been by that of the Christian Greeks. As the great Tunisian historian Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406) noticed, “Where are the sciences of the Persians which Umar ordered to be wiped out at the time of the conquest?… The sciences of only one nation, the Greeks, have come down to us, because they were translated through [Caliph] Al-Mamun’s efforts. He was successful in this direction because he had many translators at his disposal and spent much money in this connection.” These translators were Christians from the former Christian Greek Roman Empire. Ibn Khaldun also remarked that the majority of Muslim scholars were non-Arabs from the conquered nations, and that most of them were Persian.4 Speaking of the Muslim presence in North Africa, Ibn Khaldun marveled at the fact that “the buildings and constructions in Islam are comparatively few as compared to the dynasties preceding” Islam, especially “considering Islam’s power.” He observed that the “buildings erected by Arabs, with very few exceptions, quickly fall into ruins.” The reason for this, he wrote, is the Arab Bedouin’s “attitude and unfamiliarity with the crafts.” “Therefore,” he continued, “the buildings [of the Arabs] are not solidly built.”5
