- Lieut. Michael Byrd, the Capitol police officer who fatally shot Ashli Babbitt during the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, is revealing himself and sharing his story for the first time. NBC’s Lester Holt sat down with him exclusively. “I am afraid, because I know there are people who disagree with my actions,” Byrd says. “I know that that day I saved countless lives.”

In February 2019, Mr. Byrd left his loaded gun in a bathroom in the Capitol Visitor Center complex. It was found later that day through a routine security sweep. He had also had his police powers taken away more than once for not completing semi-annual firearms qualification requirements, according to the organization.
In another instance, Mr. Byrd’s powers were revoked for a shooting into his moving car as it was being stolen by teenagers. Stray bullets hit the sides of homes in the immediate area, and an investigation into the event determined that his use of force was not justified.

I had a guy kick in my front door at night. I drew on him and told him I would shoot him, if he didn't back out that door. He just froze. I said, "Look, I just remodeled, new carpet, new furniture and I don't wanna splatter your blood everywhere. My suggestion to you is to back out that door". And he did. My handgun instructor said, that was one of the best things I could do. Talk to them. Then you will see if they are high on drugs.
He did not give Ashli a warning. He just shot, even when the other officers were right behind her. He straight up murdered her.

They were all going to storm in there, that woman was attempting to jump through the doors, effectively opening the flood gates for the rest of the erratic mind-controlled mob to pour in. This officer did exactly the right thing, notice how the rest of the mob FINALLY paused a bit, maybe snapped a few back into reality temporarily. This took extreme courage and calm, tactful foresight on the officer’s part.

I am glad that he made the decision that he did. She was a military veteran aggressively jumping up into the window where Congress members were he did his job , and if she had gotten in others would have followed.
His decision saved the members of congress, because while police were tending to her, the other rioters backed off from that location. He may have also sensed per his instinct serious danger with this woman although she had no apparent weapon in her hand.
The rioters had been violent all the way to the point of arriving on the Capital, therefore he was given good reason to take that shot. They should never have been there and they were there unlawfully, period.
