  • I am intentionally pushing the Overton of the EQP so you can hear what its capable of. This is not an exercise in how to EQ nicely. I want you to hear its max and min process range. Expect at times to hear excessive highs/lows.

    People rave about the low end boost/attenuation but the high end is way more powerful imo. It boosts the upper-mids and high end in such a pleasing fashion, it doesn't just make the cymbals more present like you'd expect, it's almost as if it's compressing the overall signal and lifting those upper frequencies. I might have to snag a pair of these after hearing it with a 909, it makes the claps and snare sound so much tighter and nuanced. Excellent video!

    • @MOOTANT1
      @MOOTANT1  3 года назад

      @@yoe91 I'm afraid there is no elegant solution for what you want to do with one EQ unit. You could try processing the left and right channels separately. However, to hear what the EQ sounds like on your track you would need to sum the LR channels to mono, work the EQ until you get the sound you like and then process each side separately. Maybe, for now, you could use it to process mono sources such as kick drums, percussion, bass, etc. Then when funds arrive you could buy another one. Also as simple to operate as they are it does take a bit of time to get to know the EQ so it's really not a bad thing at all to use one for processing various sounds as you get to know the unit.

    • @yoe91
      @yoe91 3 года назад

      @@MOOTANT1 thanks for the reply. I was thinking I'd just bring all guitar or synth tracks to the middle, EQ them, and then just move those newly recorded tracks to left and right again. I mean shouldn't it work if I master a wav file that's already stereo though ?..

    • @1samwhich
      @1samwhich 3 года назад

      I am sure you've tried a few basic things already like swapping over power cords etc... Hum can come from other equipment sharing the same power board as your EQP and even the power board itself! Make sure your EQP power cables have an earth pin and has a consistent earth connection all the way through to the power socket at the wall. Go through the usual process of elimination unplugging each device one at a time. If you're running a laptop for your DAW, try disconnecting the power supply (I've had this issue once with a knackered laptop power supply).
      I have read people talking about hum coming from audio cables crossing over electrical cables (behind your desk etc) but I've never experienced it personally - definitely have with HDMI (video) cable crossing over power cables though making my computer monitor glitch. Also do some reading about balanced vs unbalanced audio cables. That might shed some light on the topic for you. Also worth researching power conditioning units just on the off chance you have a poor 110v / 240v electrical supply from your house/street. Good luck mate, hope this helps!

    Hey legends! I've had a pair of these units for several months now. Bought 1 brand new then got a second one (2nd hand) a month or two later as I loved the sound so much. However, I recently noticed 1 unit is louder than the other by ~2.2db. Using my DAW (Ableton), I've attempted to remedy this by running the L and R signal of a stereo track independently out to each unit then back again using 2 of Ableton's native External Audio Effect plugin's however this seems to mess with the stereo image of the original source audio. If I just use a single instance of the External Audio Effect plugin sending to stereo outputs 3 & 4 and receiving audio back through 5 & 6, then the stereo image remains intact however of course one side is quieter than the other. (Its pretty hard to hear the difference in volume, I had to use a Spectrum Analyzer to see the difference)
    So trying to work out what my best strategy is to remedy this. Do I install a volume/gain control on the output stage of the louder unit (on both units if I'm going to go through the effort) or is this an issue relating to tube matching? I've also noticed one unit has a noisy/super sensitive LF boost knob. Maybe that's causing some dramas? Any thoughts ?

    • @MOOTANT1
      @MOOTANT1  3 года назад +1

      -2.2db seems a rather large difference and from what you say it suggests there could be an issue with one of the units. However, what I would do in your position is to drop the utility plugin after the external plugin and use the pan knob to re-balance the centre. My units have a difference of about -0.2db between them

    • @1samwhich
      @1samwhich 3 года назад

      @@MOOTANT1 thanks for your response. I stayed up late last night researching this. Turns out quite a few people have had the same problem. Everything seems to be pointing at the fact the tubes aren't matching pairs so there are variances. Though, 2db is a pretty significant difference.
      I just can't quite wrap my head around the theory of correcting the stereo image using Utility's Pan feature...or more specifically what is happening to the stereo image? I mean, it still returns in stereo but the sounds a lot more mono with less stereo imformation. Still *some* stereo imformation but quite a bit missing as if someone's turned down a stereo widening effect on a sound if that makes sense?
      I'll do some experimenting when I get a chance over the next couple of days and see if your Utility panning works. Thanks for the suggestion!

    • @1samwhich
      @1samwhich 3 года назад +2

      Ahh dude, I worked it out. I'm such a pelican! The way I had it setup, the left channel was running through both units in series and then the right channel the same but in the opposite direction. I set the EQPs up on their own send/return tracks and the problem is now gone.
      I thought I was being clever creating a custom FX rack in Ableton with both EQPs in it but it can't work like that as the audio will just travel through both units (one after the other) before heading out through the master. I am actually surprised their wasn't major phasing going on!
      Anyways, I hope my silly mistake helps someone else! hahaha

    • @MOOTANT1
      @MOOTANT1  4 года назад

      It was a mono sample played through a stereo channel but it still only needed one EQ to treat - so effectively it was a mono channel. Ableton is very good at handling stereo and mono sources. Everything still comes through a stereo channel and in this case I inserting a mono Ext plugin (the EQ) it processes mono but If I then insert stereo choruses, reverbs, etc after the mono plugin they are in stereo so any processes such a ping pong delay would be heard in stereo. Like I say one thing Ableton is very good at doing is this kind of stuff. With Cubase, I would have to create a mono channel then buss the track to be able to insert stereo plugins

      I'm intentionally pushing it for producers to get an idea of the range. I do this with everything. I don't do subtle :)

    I'm considering to buy one. It's said that they got two of 12AU7 on the board. So what if I want to replace better ones, is it possible ? and what type of vacuum tubes I could buy, thank you!

      May I suggest you use it with the supplied tubes at least for a while to get accustomed to the sound? I am quite skeptical of how much improvement there will be slotting in different ones.

      @@MOOTANT1 Yep, the time of beginning, I'll have it used with original tubes to see. But can I ask you furthermore ? I see the I/O aren't a pair of stereo bus, is it possible to route with balanced cables ? I mean, I want to build it onto my mastering block. Thank you!

      @@AuroraPostLab Yes but units are not matched exactly. You would need to manually adjust to compensate for any differences.

      @@MOOTANT1 Sorry but can you explain more in detail this part, thanks so much. I'm intending to use Patchbay 1-2 XLR. Is it possible ?

      @@AuroraPostLab
      Any differences in tone between left and right will need to be compensated for manually on the unit's controls. If there is a volume difference then you would need to adjust the difference at the source as there are no volume controls on the EQPs. They are mono units, not stereo so if you want to use these EQ's in stereo you have to match them manually. If you're asking can you use them with a patch bay suggests to me you might be a little inexperienced and maybe signing up to a music gear forum would be helpful for you.

    How can i connect these to to make a stereo pair?

    • @dussie920
      @dussie920 3 года назад

      There's no master/slave function. You put one on the left channel, one on the right channel en dial them both in.

      actually, there is a way...just split stereo track into multi mono and than treat each of them equaly with one eq and than pan those hard left and hard right..

      When you replace the tubes with premium tubes the sound is less harsh and more refined/clear.
      warm audio pultec clone uses tung sol tubes.12AX7 2x and 12AU7 2x = 4 tubes balanced about 60 euro costs the upgrade
