  • It's the last day of my 2021 trip to Hokkaido. I have the opportunity to fish the Akan River on my way back to the airport. Even though the weather forecast is for rain, I decide to give it a go. I've never fished this river before.
This is my longest video yet, so I've added times where I hook into big fish below.
Put captions on for extra commentary and for places where the stream noise makes it difficult to hear what I'm saying.

Great vid. Thanks for taking us there. First fish is definitely a rainbow. Yamame tend to have very dark and prominent grey parr marks with orange spots and orange-yellow fins and definitely no red-pink band or cheeks like a rainbow. All beautiful fish you found. Great trip.

Thanks for the comment... and thanks for confirming that was a rainbow. I made some identification mistakes on earlier days and I was starting to doubt myself.
I'm putting together a video for the afternoon session of this day at the moment. I actually managed to land some fish in the afternoon, but nothing as big as the ones I lost in the morning.

Thanks for watching! I'm doing a New Zealand trip too, so I hope to find some good locations there.

I really love the sound of your fly reel. My I ask the make and model? 😇

@m.h.english4473 My reel is in storage for winter at the moment. I can't actually remember the make but I'll check next time I get it out and reply back here. I'm planning an Australia/New Zealand trip in March, so I'll report back in a few weeks. It's nothing very expensive.
