I have the OG EF 75-300mm F4-5.6 IS USM and it's not bad. There is some noise during focusing and as you're moving the camera around with the AF on but not a big deal for me. It takes good pictures and I have no complaints so far. I use it with a Canon EOS R10. Granted, it's nowhere near the performance of my RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 ISM USM, but it's fun to play with and it gets the job done.
Thanks Josh. Looking to get another lens for my wife's birthday for the Rebel I got her for Christmas. She's 5 months into the game and I don't want to break the bank. Helpful video!
It depends on your editing software. Programs like Adobe Lightroom Classic have a small box you can check that will get rid of most of it automatically. If it doesn't work, they then have a series of sliders you can move around until it works. Hope this helps!
I absolutely loved my 70-200 2,8L. And then I bought the 55-250 IS (the first version, I beleive there were 3 different versions, the 55-250, the 55-250 II and the latest, the STM which is far superior than the first) and I loved the first version. I really enjoed using it when going out with kids with a limited amount of gear and even on that one the image quality was superb. Since then they upgraded the IS, the AF system (they are fast working amazingly effective (IS) and silent. ) As far as I know they did some improvement in the glass elements inside, so the STM is even sharper than the original 55-250 which was very very good to begin with.
I have the 75-300 that I use with an APS-C camera, an EOS Rebel XSi, and have been looking for a replacement for it lately mainly because of the chromatic aberration when I have it out to 300mm. My next longest lens is a Tamron 278D 80-210mm, which I really like using until I park my car at a nature preserve or park and get out to try to capture wildlife or what have you. Being that I'm in Michigan, it's overcast a lot, and I find that on overcast days pointing upwards into the trees to capture a bird or whatever is typically going to have just a ton of purple and green fringing when I use the 75-300. On a clear, blue sky day or against greenery I've managed some pretty nice shots... As long as the white content is kept to a minimum, which includes the subject. But it's a weird lens in that it doesn't always happen. Case in point: I took a bunch of pics of a mute swan on the river at 300mm and had next basically zero fringing and had some really decent detail in the feathers, but another pic I took of a butterfly on a tasel, also at 300mm, had quite a bit of purple on white areas of the flower itself or any part approaching white (like the tips of the thorns) while managing pretty good detail on the butterfly. I had considered adding the EF-S 55-250 to my lens collection but was concerned with the overlap since I also have a Tamron A15 55-200mm lens (which was designed for APS-C bodies where the 278D wasn't). Now I kinda want to see if I can grab a "gently" used one. Great review, it really helps.
I wish you would have shown the difference between how close 300mm over 250mm. If I need to get close to something how much closer will 300mm be. If it gets me a bigger difference closer, that would override all other issues. I need to get close more then all other issues.
In my testing the sharpness and overall image quality of the 55-250mm will be higher even if you crop in to an equivalent shot at 300mm. Sorry I didn't provide exactly what you wanted, but hope this helps a little!
i also looking for a cheap tele lens for my old canon but i can only go for 75-300 cause i using old full frame camera but i really love the focus speed and the IS and the price of the 55-250, but there just none other in that price range to choose for EF lens
@@JoshWiniarski ya unfortunately the the IS USM 70-300 is much more expensive another workaround is to mod the mount of 55-250 to fit FF body, but will got dark image circle and will need to crop afterwards
I got the EF-M 55-200mm for my M50, its even better image quality and smaller. However, build quality is plasticy and ofc you miss some reach. Much better for me because together with the adapter its heavy and huge.
So on my M50 with an adaptor, the 75-300 is really a 120-480mm and the 55-250 an 88-400mm. Out of the two, I'd probably go for the 55-250, not sure I like the plastic mounting but, if you say it's fine and we're working to a budget, then thank you for your advice Josh.
I found the 55-250mm without the STM, trying to find reviews of whether or not it's worth paying extra for the STM but I really enjoyed this review (and I've seen the original, still remember the shoe throw!)
just ordered the 55-250 wanted the 75 - 300 but they sold out and other places was alot higher.. guess ill be happy with the 55-250 thanks for the info
I already knew the winner but came to watch anyways. One point you forgot was not just that there is not that big of a difference between 250mm and 300mm, but there is a big difference between 55mm and 75mm because you may be in a position where you can't back up. I've wanted to get a EF-S 55-250mm for years but never had the money. It's my next lens to buy though.
Good video. I've had the 75-300 for a while and just picked up the 55-250 last week at a pawn shop. So far, I agree 100% with what you said in this video. Wish I'd seen this before today, would have got the 55-250 a long time ago.
70-300 is full frame and good for price. But i recall having that lens and not liking it so much. Use in camera corrections and stop it down a little. I think it works pretty well for portraits specially on ff body or M series with speed booster. It is probably going to be best cheap telephoto on Canon R6. You get ibis and 20 mp isn't alot.
Great aproach for the video, very useful in all senses. 1- Reviewing budget gear. 2- Picking a clear winner 3- Recognizing the "loser" and a good message about photography
I went with both because the 75-300 is more of a 88-400mm on crop sensor dslr :) and I also recommend people buying their lenses from mercari, found great deals on there! Only way I could get both :D
I have had the older 75-300 that you are showing, paid under $100, but didn't like it and sold it. I now have the Canon 75-300 IS USM and the 55-250 IS STM. My 300mm has image stabilization, so a fairer comparison could be done. I haven't tried that yet, I guess I'll have to go to the local duck pond. This 300mm is more expensive than the non IS version. The other thing is that the IS USM 300 is heavy, I have a Canon 80D and personally I like the weight, seems to make it more stable when hand shooting. Still, I think the 55-250 is a better lens for most people and worth the extra $$$.
I just got a T7 camera and i've been looking at getting a new lens for longer distance photos. I was researching between these two but after seeing this I think im going to go with the 55-250mm lens.
My question is why is the 70-200 so much more money and such a better lens compared to the 75-300 which you would think would be better? Why did canon put so much stuff in the 70-200 compared to the others? Great video and you just answered my question about which budget lens to get.
Great question! So as a general rule of thumb, the smaller the focal range, the sharper the images will be within that range (again just a general rule, there are certainly exceptions). This is why prime lenses like a 24mm, 40mm, 50mm etc. are so sharp. They can't zoom, but they have less moving parts and just work really well. A lens like an 18-200mm has a huge focal range, from wide to telephoto, but the image is worse throughout that range. There are a lot of reasons the 70-200mm is superior. First off, depending on the model it goes down to either f/4 or f/2.8. This means it lets in more light, you can have a faster shutterspeed, and the background is blurrier. On top of that, the lens is weather-sealed, has a faster motor for focusing, and is overall just a superior lens (although it's heavy). As to why they picked 70-200mm, I think that's just how the math worked out. You'll notice most lenses across brands have similar focal ranges give or take a few mm for a lot of lenses. Hope this helps!
Thank you so much for this video was trying to decide between the two, especially when trying to take a photo of a bird in mid flight. Decided to go with the 55-250mm 🙂
I have a Canon 600d (Rebel T3i), anyone know if the 55-250 would be better than any sort of Tamron equivalent? Seems the prices of these have gone UP quite a bit since this video came out.
I've shot with the 75 and it does suck. I've own the 55 and it's great. It produces images far better than its price would imply. I highly recommend the 55-250 for any Canon APS-C camera user. It's well worth the money. I tested it against a 70-200 f/4 L on my 70 D and the images from the 55-250 looked just as good. The only category in which the L series lens was superior was build quality. You will not regret the purchase of the 55-250 unless you treat your lenses very roughly.
Great stuff Josh and thanks for not making us hobbyist picture-takers feel bad. LOL! I'm new to the game and frankly "afraid" to invest a lot of money right now in lenses until I learn a bit more about them. There are a lot of snobs out there and I found that out real quick. I purchased the 75 - 300mm lens on Amazon for $199 new and looking forward to getting it in the mail. This is actually how I found your video as I was looking for a review on that lens because I have no idea what to expect out of it. I rented the 55 - 250 and absolutely loved it, especially for portraits. Your video was not only extremely helpful but also encouraging for a newbie like me. Keep making great content. I love it and thanks again! 👍🏾✌🏾 I agree with Daniel's comment below though...the 55 - 250 is the better choice....and you do deserve more subscribers. They will come! 😊
Thanks Marlon for the thoughtful comment, I love hearing how my videos encourage people! I think one of the biggest problems in the photography community is the fact that people who have more money or have done it longer disregard all the entry level equipment (even though they were probably using the same stuff like 2 years ago haha). Glad to hear you're getting into the world of photography, go make some awesome stuff!
I have had the 75-300 since I got my t6 back in 2017. After a long hiatus from photography, I got into bird photography very recently! I have noticed the exact issues you mention in your video. I find the chromatic aberration and auto-focus annoying (AF scares the skittish birds). I will continue to try to get the most out of the 75-300 on manual focus, but the 55-250mm seems to be a good next lens for my T6!
Got me my 55-250 stm back in 2018 for my eos 50d. Great and dependable lens. I shoot motorsports with it, and while it's not as good as the popular high-end 70-200 2.8 IS L which I've tested before, i can say my 55-250 stm is still good for what it's worth, considering my budget. I still do dream of that 70-200L, but reality bites
My 55 to 250 which I just got has a very loud auto focus. I could say worse than that 70 to 300. Honestly I got it for a really good deal and I needed a cheaper telephoto lens now and everything else works great, maybe I should get a external microphone. I can use it for years then
Is it the non-STM version? Before the most recent version there was 1 or 2 models with non-stm motors which were likely louder. Either way, glad you got a good deal!
@@JoshWiniarski ahhh it very well could be. It's the silver band which I knew was older but from what I read I saw no differences. I'm guessing that's the one. Still I am loving it, thank you for the video man :)
I’ve been seeing other photographers using that lense on their kids games I think it’s a great lens from my opinion I never used it or had it I just see the good comments about it and it takes great photos so I’m thinking about it buying it soon. Thanks for your help Amigo
I find the 300mm is better for budget nature photography . I'm typically zoomed all the way out ,I have the 250mm and I find the extra 50 focal length of the 300 is better for me.
I find that the extra focal length definitely comes at a price when used with my camera (Rebel XSi, APS-C) but that all depends on the conditions I use it under. As long as I keep the white in the scene to a minimum that it can be pretty good, if not then there will be purple and green fringing all over the place.
The 55-250mm is gonna be your best option unless you're willing to spend significantly more money (like more than the price of that camera). Hope you get some awesome shots with whatever you go with!

Yeah the 75-300 I had it a couple of years ago and it was inferior to the 55-250mm lens. I really do like that lens a lot too. The STM and USM are great
I just came back from a trip in Japan with the 75-300mm. While it took some great shots, it would've been super nice to have the stablization and reduced abberation. Thanks for the vid!
I wish I could go with the 55-250, but I had to go with film so I'm limited to full frame lenses. I'll probably get a 75-300 when one pops up locally, but it doesn't look like it's worth driving 3 hours to get a used one, or worth paying full price.
Canon 55-250mm is by far my choose, even though both non STm and STM are more expensive than the 75-300, just as we put in perspective the 300mm as a great choose because it is so cheap for the longer reach, the 250mm in perspective is cheap and very well done for what it is. Two main reason to put a premium price into a lens are IS and big F stop, so there is no cheaper IS telephoto lens for canon which is almost a must. It's only downfalls are STM motor which I feel like it sucks, but there are many mk2 copies, is not as good at image quality, but still have IS and the fact it is APS-C, if you get a full frame, say goodbye to your cheap and nice IS lens. I highly recomend getting a 55-250, the only reason I have a 75-300 is because it cost me 10 dollarxD
I like that "screw it" line, and "use whatever gear you have", too. That was motivational bc it's easy to get discouraged over gear.

Great comparison, exactly what I was looking for. Although the lens price has nearly doubled in the past 2 years.
Good review I’ve got the 55-250 and amazed how good it is for the price.
It's such a good value!
Awesome, glad I could help!
When you said "remove the chromatic aberration," how would you go about doing that?
It depends on your editing software. Programs like Adobe Lightroom Classic have a small box you can check that will get rid of most of it automatically. If it doesn't work, they then have a series of sliders you can move around until it works. Hope this helps!
you're right, always sleep in 90 min intervals. as long as you wake up on every 90 min mark, youll wake up ready to bounce.
I second this. I have this lens and it is damn sharp. The af is so silent you cant really hear it
I have the 75-300 that I use with an APS-C camera, an EOS Rebel XSi, and have been looking for a replacement for it lately mainly because of the chromatic aberration when I have it out to 300mm.
Thanks for this video . I am going to buy 55-250 soon
i also looking for a cheap tele lens for my old canon
but i can only go for 75-300 cause i using old full frame camera
but i really love the focus speed and the IS and the price of the 55-250, but there just none other in that price range to choose for EF lens
There's also the Image Stabilized 70-300mm, but it'll be more expensive unfortunately.
@@JoshWiniarski ya unfortunately the the IS USM 70-300 is much more expensive
another workaround is to mod the mount of 55-250 to fit FF body, but will got dark
image circle and will need to crop afterwards
@@JoshWiniarski : I'm getting a refurbished one for $139, it includes a hood, wide angle and telephoto lenses.
Excellent review mate!!
Thanks!
Thank you. Your video help me decide on the right lens. I purchased the 55-300 canon for the stabilizer
I got the EF-M 55-200mm for my M50, its even better image quality and smaller. However, build quality is plasticy and ofc you miss some reach. Much better for me because together with the adapter its heavy and huge.
Because of this video i decided to bought 55-250 mm. Thanks man
So on my M50 with an adaptor, the 75-300 is really a 120-480mm and the 55-250 an 88-400mm. Out of the two, I'd probably go for the 55-250, not sure I like the plastic mounting but, if you say it's fine and we're working to a budget, then thank you for your advice Josh.
Which adaptor are you using ?
Which one best
I found the 55-250mm without the STM, trying to find reviews of whether or not it's worth paying extra for the STM but I really enjoyed this review (and I've seen the original, still remember the shoe throw!)
bought a 55-250mm used for 120,- today
will serve me very well
Excited for you!
just ordered the 55-250 wanted the 75 - 300 but they sold out and other places was alot higher.. guess ill be happy with the 55-250 thanks for the info
If someone is selling the 55-250mm for $50 with a few spots on it will that affect the photos?
Great aproach for the video, very useful in all senses. 1- Reviewing budget gear. 2- Picking a clear winner 3- Recognizing the "loser" and a good message about photography
Thanks!
Excellent presentation. I'm thinking which lens I’ll afford. 300 or 250. After watching your video I've firmly decided to take 55-250. Thank you
I went with both because the 75-300 is more of a 88-400mm on crop sensor dslr :) and I also recommend people buying their lenses from mercari, found great deals on there! Only way I could get both :D
The 55-250mm is a 88-400mm lens attached to a Canon APS-C 1.6x crop sensor camera. The 75-300mm is a 120-480mm lens.
I have a 18-175 and want to step up to take far bird photos which one should I upgrade to
55-250
Thanks Josh, it helps me to decide which one should I buy tomorrow.
Glad I could help!
Right on! I think you'll love the 55-250 on that camera!
Does anyone use 75-300 mm lens with a teleconverter?
75-300 made my eclipse photos purple fringe bad. Didn’t have the 55-250 so next eclipse I’ll find out
Thank you so much for this video was trying to decide between the two, especially when trying to take a photo of a bird in mid flight. Decided to go with the 55-250mm 🙂
Glad it was helpful, hope you get some awesome photos with it!
Thanks! I'm a brazilian guy and I think Im going to buy a 55-250mm
I hope you create some awesome stuff with it!
Does the 75-300 have a better zoom than the 55-250??
I'm sold to the 55-250mm! What do you think about used lenses?
I've bought more used lenses than new lenses! Always a solid option!
Correction: as long as they aren't broken or scratched haha
I picked up the 55-250 a couple of weeks ago, and I've quite liked it both on my 7D Mk II and my 20D. Even on my very old 300D it is a nice lens.
Thank you for exactly this test.
I just bought the 55-250.
Happy to help! Hope you get some awesome photos with it!
Great video, please let me know that which one is better between 55 -250 and 70 -300 mm canon.
55-250mm is a better lens for most people
I have a Canon 600d (Rebel T3i), anyone know if the 55-250 would be better than any sort of Tamron equivalent? Seems the prices of these have gone UP quite a bit since this video came out.
I've shot with the 75 and it does suck. I've own the 55 and it's great. It produces images far better than its price would imply. I highly recommend the 55-250 for any Canon APS-C camera user. It's well worth the money. I tested it against a 70-200 f/4 L on my 70 D and the images from the 55-250 looked just as good. The only category in which the L series lens was superior was build quality. You will not regret the purchase of the 55-250 unless you treat your lenses very roughly.
anyone know if these 2 Lenses fit the Cannon Rebel Eos T5i ? I'm new to looking to buy less any help would be highly Appreciated Thank you.
I agree with Daniel's comment below though...the 55 - 250 is the better choice....and you do deserve more subscribers.
@@JoshWiniarski I sure will. Thanks Bro!
My question is speed booster or no speed booster for the 75-300mm, or go with the 55-200 mm for my camera.
Adobe Lightroom does a pretty good job getting rid of chromatic aberration.
One of the most useful vids I've seen 👍
Glad it was helpful!
My pleasure, yep they're both pretty popular to see on the sidelines of kids' games!
Thanx. Have both and need to decide which stay with me. Your video help a lot.
Sweet, glad I could help!
5:25 that chromatic aberration is unreal...
I got the Eos Canon 2000d, I believe and hope it gonna be a real deal to go for the 55-250mm! Thanks for this tutorial!
Awesome setup, you're very welcome!
So is the 55-250mm better than 75-300mm lens?
Yep, if you can afford it it's the better option!
Cannon 55 250 vs cannon 75 300 mm which lens best for blur background
I find the 300mm is better for budget nature photography . I'm typically zoomed all the way out ,I have the 250mm and I find the extra 50 focal length of the 300 is better for me.
I find that the extra focal length definitely comes at a price when used with my camera (Rebel XSi, APS-C) but that all depends on the conditions I use it under. As long as I keep the white in the scene to a minimum that it can be pretty good, if not then there will be purple and green fringing all over the place.
Nice vid & personality Josh! You enjoy helping people.
Thanks, happy to help :)
Which lends is better for action shots?
55-250mm
@@JoshWiniarski thank you very much just wondering there one on amazon should I get it or go somewhere else?
im trying to record my son soccer games and im wondering which lense will help me to get a good videos . im using canon sl3 . thx
The 55-250mm is gonna be your best option unless you're willing to spend significantly more money (like more than the price of that camera). Hope you get some awesome shots with whatever you go with!
Even though this was a couple of years ago. I have a canon rebel t7 so glad you did this with a t6 great comparison. I have the 75-300mm I was going to get the 55-250 I’m still going to get it . I’m just glad it’s videos out here like this for me to make a great decision. It’s hard to find people with these types of cameras and making reviews like this . Great work ‼️
I go to ask, why the masking tape on the end caps?
Which lenses should i buy with canon 200d ii .
The 55-250mm :)
@@JoshWiniarski this is my first dslr bro and I'm just buying it for house party snd street photography and main night photography so i was thinking that i should buy a kit lense(18-55mm ) and another 50mm (1.8) canon .
Thanks for the vid!
in 2021 is this still a relevant option? is there any lens with the same range of price that offers more than what 55-250 offers?
I wish I could go with the 55-250, but I had to go with film so I'm limited to full frame lenses. I'll probably get a 75-300 when one pops up locally, but it doesn't look like it's worth driving 3 hours to get a used one, or worth paying full price.
Well done comparison video.
Thanks, glad it was helpful!
What do I need for the 55-250 to mount on canon m50. Beginner here!!
Thanks for the videwo it really helped me so what i know what gear to buy
Hey i have a canon m50. Do i need an adaptor for these lenses? If i want to take pics of the moon which one do you recomend me?
Both these lenses would need an adapter for the m50, and I'd recommend the 55-250mm!
